Synthesis of UV-Curable Six-Functional Urethane Acrylates Using Pentaerytritol Triacrylate and Their Cured Film Properties (Pentaerytritol Triacrylate를 이용한 광경화용 6관능 우레탄 아크릴레이트 합성과 경화필름 물성에 관한 연구)

  • Pentaerytritol triacrylate (PETA) was synthesized by a condensation reaction between pentaerytritol and acrylic acid. The highest yield of PETA was obtained when heptane was used as a solvent under the 1:4 mole ratio of pentaerytritol and acrylic acid. The 6-functional urethane acrylates(UA) were also synthesized by a condensation reaction between PETA and diisocyanate. Cured films were prepared from the mixtures of UA oligomer, reactive diluents and UV initiator to investigate their physical properties. The thermal stability of the aliphatic urethane acrylate was better than that of the aromatic urethane acrylate. The UA-2 showed good hardness and scratch resistance properties while the UA-l with a high degree of curing density exhibited a better chemical resistance. All the UA oligomers showed fairly good adhesion strengths but the other physical properties of UA-3 were poor due to its low curing density.

  • UV-Curable hybrid coatings were synthesized to improve the surface properties of plastic film. Organic-inorganic coating solutions were prepared by the sol-gel method using urethane-acrylate oligomer, acrylate monomer, photo initiator and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPTMS) was used as a silane coupling agent to improve chemical interaction between inorganic phases and UV curable acrylate. In this study, the surface hardness and adhesive properties were improved with the use of inorganic component. The experimental results showed that UV-Curable hybrid films containing aliphatic urethane oligomer, hexanedioldiacrylate, trimethylolpropanetriacrylate, hydroxy dimethyl acetophenone exhibited good surface properties. Also, the optimum curing conditions were investigated.

  • The catalytic effects of carboxylic acid and dibutyltin dilaurate(DBTL) on the curing rate of acrylic polyol with isocyanate prepolymer were investigated. In this work reaction of a biuret type aliphatic isocyanate with acrylic polyol follows the second order reaction in the thin film state. Carboxylic acid of acrylic polyol has a strong catalytic effect on the isocyanate groups and influences greatly on curing rate, also DBTL is more effective catalysis on acrylic polyol without carboxylic acid than with carboxylic acid.

Excitation Wavelength Dependence of Laser Ablation Mechanism of Urethane-Urea Copolymer Film Studied by Time-Resolved Absorbance Measurements

  • The excitation wavelength dependence of laser ablation dynamics of an azobenzene-containing urethane-urea copolymer film was investigated by measuring the laser fluence dependence of etch depth, transient absorbance change at each excitation wavelength, and transient absorption spectra. Moreover expansion/contraction dynamics was studied by applying nanosecond time-resolved interferometry. The threshold was determined at several excitation wavelengths from etch depth measurement, while time-integrated absorbance was obtained under excitation conditions. The photon energy required to remove the topmost of surface layer of the film did not .depend on excitation wavelength, and the penetration depth of excitation pulse dominated the etch depth. When the excitation wavelength was longer than 500 nm, permanent swelling was clearly observed but not for shorter wavelength excitation. In the latter case, photoisomerization occurred during excitation and the following photoreduction may play an important role. On the basis of the observations made in this study, a photochemical and photothermal mechanisms can explain mostly the short and long wavelength excitation results, respectively.

Experimental Studies of Wrinkle Formation in the UV Cured Coating Around Film-Substrate Insterface (자외선 경화코팅 필름-기질 계면에서의 주름현상에 대한 연구)

  • The durability of UV radiation cured coatings near the film-substrate interface has been studied. Particularly, the influence of the reactive diluent and oligomer in the UV-cured urethane acrylate formulation on the wrinkle formation of coating films was investigated. Results showed that wrinkle resistance increases when DMTA loss peaks of coating network are broad and has shoulder. When modified aromatic urethane acrylate oligomer is used to replace the aliphatic one, resulting cured network provides coating film of high hardness and flexibility. Therefore, the high values of loss modulus as low temperature are considered to be the main reason for wrinkle resistance improvements. The SEM and instron data support above conclusion.

  • Two functional urethane acrylates were synthesized by using polycarprolactonediol (PCLD) and diisocyanate. The synthesized fuctional urethane acrylate was mixed with butyl acrylate(BA) or adhesion promoters, and their properties were investigated. To synthesize an excellent transparent urethane acrylate, isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI) was used. In addition, the effect of adding butyl acrylate for the improvement of shrinkage of urethane acrylate was studied. The results showed that the addition of butyl acrylate improved the shrinkage, and the optimum butyl acrylate content was 15 wt%. Both 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate (2-EHA) and ethyl acrylate(EA) were polymerized at $85^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs to use as adhesion promoters, and the polymerized adhesion promoters were mixed to the UV-curing resin. The results showed that the adhesion properties increased with the increase of adhesion promoters content up to 15 wt%.

  • Poly(urethane-imide)s were prepared by reaction between crosslinkable endgroup containing soluble polyimide (PI) by chemical imidization and acrylate end-capped polyurethane (PU). Poly (amic acid) was prepared from 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and then end-capped with maleic anhydride (MA). The PU prepolymers were prepared by the reaction of polycaprolactone diol, tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate and end-capped with hydroxyl ethyl acrylate. The effect of PU content on the residual stress behavior, morphology and thermal property was studied. The poly(urethane-imide)s were characterized by thin film stress analyzer (TFSA), XRD, TGA and DMTA. Low residual stress and slope in cooling curve were achieved by higher PU content. Compared to typical polyurethane, these polymers exhibited better thermal stability due to the presence of the imide groups. Finally the residual stress of poly(urethane-imide)s was strongly affected by the morphological structure.

  • In this study, the caprolactone modified hydroxy acrylates (CHAs) were synthesized by ring-opening reaction of caprolactone and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) as initiator. Also, the caprolactone modified urethane acrylate (UA) oligomers were synthesized by condensation reaction of previously synthesized CHAs, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HDT). Using the hydroxy number of CHAs, the molecular weights of the CHAs were calculated easily and their molecular weight was similar to the theoretical molecular weight of them. The viscosity of UA oligomers decreased as increasing a content of CHA in the UA oligomer. Cure films were prepared from UA oligomer, reactive diluents, and UV initiator to investigate their physical properties. The thermal stability and color difference on high temperature for the cured film were improved as increasing the crosslinking density. Their surface hardness was also increased as increasing crosslinking density of the cured films, but their elongation at break was decreased.

  • Hydroxypropyl terminated PDMS was synthesized by the hydrosilylation reaction with allyl alcohol in the presence of Karstedt's catalyst. And them, an one-pot reaction with HDI isocyanurate trimer and hydroxyethyl methacrylate was conducted to give a silicone-modified urethane acrylate oligomer (PUA oligomer) having 9000 g/mol, weight average molecular weight. The synthesized PUA oligomer was characterized by using FT-IR and GPC. The UV-curable coatings were prepared by PUA oligomer blending with a reactive monomer (phenylthioethyl acrylate) under the different mole ratios. It was found that the refractive index of cured film increased when the reactive monomer was added but there was no relationship between the refractive index and amount of reactive monomer. Also, their transmittance for cured films was not change as increasing the content of reactive monomer.

  • A series of waterbome poly(urethane-urea) anionomers were prepared from isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), polycaprolactone diol (PCL), dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA), ethylene diamine (EDA), and triethylamine (TEA), NaOH, or Cu($(COOCH_3)_2$) as neutralizing agent. This study was performed to decide the effect of neutralizing agent type on the particle size viscosity, hydrogen bonding index, adhesive strength, antistaticity, antibacterial and mechanical properties. The particle size of the dispersions decreased in the following order: TEA based samples (T-sample), NaOH based samples (N-sample), and Cu($(COOCH_3)_2$) based sample (C-sample). The viscosity of the dispersions increased in the order of C-sample, N-sample, and T-sample. Metal salt based film samples Of and C-sample) had much higher antistaticity than TEA based sample. By infrared spectroscopy, it was found that the hydrogen bonding index (or fraction) of samples decreased in the order of T-sam-pie, N-sample, and C-sample. The adhesive strength and tensile modulus/strength decreased in the order of T-sample, N-sam-pie, and C-sample. The C-sample had strong antibacterial halo, however, T- and N-samples did not
