  • Mapping urban areas using the earth observation satellites is useful for monitoring urban expansions and measuring urban developments. In this research, the different thresholds for detecting the urban areas separately from the remote-sensing index images (normalized-difference built-up index(NDBI) and urban index(UI) images) generated from the Landsat-8 image acquired in Daegu, South Korea were evaluated through the following steps: (1) the NDBI and UI images were separately generated from the given Landsat-8 image; (2) the different thresholds (-0.4, -0.2, and 0) for detecting the urban areas separately from the NDBI and UI images were evaluated; and (3) the accuracy of each detected urban area was assessed. The experiment results showed that the threshold -0.2 had the best performance for detecting the urban areas from the NDBI image, while the threshold -0.4 had the best performance for detecting the urban areas from the UI image. Some misclassification errors, however, occurred in the areas where the bare soil areas were classified into urban areas or where the high-rise apartments were classified into other areas. In the future research, a robust methodology for detecting urban areas, including the various types of urban features, with less misclassification errors will be proposed using the satellite images. In addition, research on analyzing the pattern of urban expansion will be carried out using the urban areas detected from the multi-temporal satellite images.

  • Urban parks, as remnant patches, of two older cities and two new towns can be analyzed by a landscape ecological approach. The index of patch shape, the dispersion of patches, the mean edge length, and the mean patch size of parks of each city are ocmpared. The findings of this study are as follows : 1) The mean edge length of urban parks of older cities is longer than that of new towns : Seoul>Suwon>Bundang>Ansan. 2) The mean patch size of urban parks in Seoul is much greater than those of other cities : Seoul> Ansan>Suwon>Bundang. 3) The index of patch shape of urban parks of older cities is greater than that of new towns : Seoul>Suwon>BundangAnsan. 4) The dispersion of patches is in the order of Bundang >Ansan>Seoul>Suwon. The new towns have relatively even distributions of urban parks than older cities. Further research is required to find out the relationship between the index of patch shape and patch interior dynamics.

  • This study investigates how much building area among total building area concentrates on urban region in a local government region and then, I applies 'The Index of Building Concentration in Urban Area' for the first time in a study. The finding shows that Cities' Index is higher than counties', and also shows that a lower index is associated with a higher rate of older adult population, and is also associated with higher general budget expenditure by the local government based on the index of Building Concentration in Urban Area in Gyeongbuk Province. This study provides evidence that the Index of Building Concentration in Urban Area can be utilized in measuring shrinkage level, effectiveness of municipal finance, and in establishing shrinkage city/county planning by basic data.

  • In this paper the extraction method for the best suitable green vegetation area in urban area, Daegu, Korea, was developed using satellite images (1994, 1999, Landsat TM). For this, the GIS overlay analysis of GVI (Green Vegetation Index), SBI (Soil Brightness index), NWI (None-Such wetness Index) was performed to estimate the best suitable green vegetation area. Also, the statistical documents, algorithm and Tasseled-Cap index were used to recognize the change of land cover such as cultivation area, urban area, and damaged area. Through the result of this study, it is possible to monitor the large sized reclamation of land by drainage or damaged area by forest fires. Moreover, information with the change of green vegetation and the status of cultivation by GVI, but also moisture content by percentage by NWI and surface class by SBI can be obtained.

  • As natural disasters are increasing due to the unusual weather and the modern society is getting complicated, the rapid change of the urban environment has increased human disasters. Thus, citizens are becoming more anxious about social safety. The importance of preparation for safety has been suggested by providing the disaster safety services such as regional safety index, life safety map, and disaster safety portal application. In this paper, we propose an application framework to predict the urban safety index based on user's location with realtime weather/atmosphere data after creating a predication model based on the machine learning using number of occurrence cases and weather/atmosphere history data. Also, we implement an application to provide traffic safety index with executing preprocessing occurrence cases of traffic and weather/atmosphere data. The existing regional safety index, which is displayed on the Si-gun-gu area, has been mainly utilized to establish safety plans for districts vulnerable to national policies on safety. The proposed system has an advantage to service useful information to citizens by providing urban safety index based on location of interests and current position with realtime related data.

  • In this study, we analyzed th Cheonggyecheon watershed for urban flood risk index. SWMM model configuration based on each watershed data. And it was set as the final index calculated indicators related to the humanities, social and environmental. Each indicator was standardized and weighted using the Delphi method. Finally, select the danger area through urban flood risk index. Determined 12 indices according to the hazard and vulnerability. Vulnerability is selected the index divided by three factors. 21 watersheds were analyzed through urban flood risk index. The top of three areas of index is Jeongneung 1, Majang, Pil-dong, each index is 0.533, 0.494, 0.381. The lowest index is soongin 0.216. Urban flood risk index developed in this study can be applied to other regions in Korea for establishing national water resources management plan.

  • This study was conducted to compare the dietary factors which influence on the bone status of 28 women in urban and 30 women in rural area. Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline(Hpr) and Calcium(Ca) were measured as biological markers of bone resorption. Mean daily intake levels of total protein, animal protein, total calcium, calcium, calcium from milk and milk products, animal calcium, Ca / P ratio by 24 hr recall method were significantly higher in urban women. However, mean daily sodium(Na) intake levels were not significantly different between two groups. Ca Index score and Na Index score by food frequency methods were also significantly higher in urban than in rural subjects. While urinary Ca excretion elves of two groups were similar, Na excretion levels were significantly higher in rural women. Mean urniary levels of Ca / creatinine(cr) and Hpr / cr as bone status index were within normal range and not significantly different between two groups. However, prevalence of poor bone status as assessed by hydroxyproline was higher in rural women. Na Index, urinary Ca excretion and Ca / cr ratio were significantly correlated with bone status(Hpr / cr) in urban women, while only age was related to bone status in rural women. These demonstrated that high Na intake results in increased urinary excretion of Na and Ca and could cause bone resorption. Multiple regression analysis indicated that Na Index score and age have greater effect than other variables in urban women and only age has greater effect in rural women.
