  • The upper bound analysis by stream function is used to study the torsional forward extrusion. The torsional forward extrusion process not only reduces forming load but also increase optimal die angle. Optimal die angle is determined by the optimization technique. The advantages of this process are that the low capacity of pressing machine can be used and the process with a large die angle can be applied. To verify the theoretical result, we have carried out experiments using model material (plasticine) and FE simulations using DEFORM3D.

  • An upper-bound elemental technique (UBET) analysis is carried out to improve the material flow and to reduce the load of bearing-race forming process. The UBET analysis, which adapts the advantages of stream function and finite element method, is useful for predicting the profile of complex geometric bound- ary. From the UBET analysis, the forming load, the velocity distribution and the stream line of the deformed billet are determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to chosen parameters. The results of present UBET analysis are better than those of previous UBET analysis. Experiments have been carried out with model material plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions for forming load and flow pattern(stream line) are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Several metalliferous and coal mines, including Myungjin, Seojin and Okdong located at the upper watershed of Okdong stream, were abandoned or closed since 1988 due to the mining industry promotion policy and thus disposed an enormous amount of mining wastes without a proper treatment facilities, resulting in water pollution in the downstream areas. AMD and waste effluents from the closed coal mines were very strongly acidic showing pH ranges of 2.7 to 4.5 and had a high level of total dissolved solid (TDS) showing the ranges of 1,030 to 1,947 mg/L. Also heavy metal concentrations in these samples such as Fe, Cu, Cd and anion such as sulfate were very high. These parameters of AMD and effluents were considered to be highly polluted as compared to those in the main stream area of the Okdong river and be major pollutants for water and soil in tile downstream area. Pollution indices of the surface water at the upper stream of Okdong river where AMD of the abandoned coal mines was flowed into main stream were in the ranges of 16.3 to 47.1. On the other hand, those at the mid stream where effluents from tailing dams and coal mines flowed into main stream were in tile ranges of 10.6 to 19.5. However, those at the lower stream were ranged from 10.6 to 14.9 These results indicated that mining wastes such as AMD and effluents from the closed mines were tile major source to water pollution at the Okdong stream areas.

  • Generation mechanisms of the three moderate-or-greater (MOG)-level clear-air turbulence (CAT) encounters over South Korea are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The cases are selected among the MOG-level CAT events occurred in Korea during 2002-2008 that are categorized into three different generation mechanisms (upper-level front and jet stream, anticyclonic flow, and mountain waves) in the previous study by Min et al. For the case at 0127 UTC 18 Jun 2003, strong vertical wind shear (0.025 $s^{-1}$) generates shearing instabilities below the enhanced upper-level jet core of the maximum wind speed exceeding 50 m $s^{-1}$, and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT event over mid Korea. For the case at 2330 UTC 22 Nov 2006, areas of the inertia instability represented by the negative absolute vorticity are formed in the anticyclonically sheared side of the jet stream, and turbulence is activated near the observed CAT event over southwest of Korea. For the case at 0450 UTC 16 Feb 2003, vertically propagating mountain waves locally trigger shearing instability (Ri < 0.25) near the area where the background Richardson number is sufficiently small (0.25 < Ri < 1), and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT over the Eastern mountainous region of South Korea.

  • It is the purpose of this study to investigate the change of stream water quality in upper stream of Dongjin river, and to give the basic information for the conservation of water quality. Water samples were taken periodically at 9 sampling sites during 8 months from March to October in 2002. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The water temperature and pH of stream water were ranged $9.0{\sim}29.4^{\circ}C,\;6.48{\sim}9.33$, respectively. The COD values of stream water was ranged from 0.60 to 19.06. The contents of T-N and T-P mainly affected by the livestock wastes, and agricultural activity were $1.88{\sim}6.74\;mg/L$, ND(not deleted)${\sim}0.50\;mg/L$, respectively. 2. The SS, DO and BOD values of stream water were ranged $0.4mg/L{\sim}274.0mg/L$, $0.5{\sim}6.0\;mg/L$, and $7.3{\sim}13.7\;mg/L$ respectively. 3. The cation is one of the important components in analysis of stream water quality. The contents of analysis, $Ca^{++},\;Mg^{++},\;Na^+$ and $K^+$ were ranged $1.96{\sim}11.08\;mg/L$, $1.21{\sim}6.16\;mg/L$, $3.38{\sim}18.44\;mg/L$, $1.12{\sim}7.96\;mg/L$, respectively. SAR was ranged $0.31{\sim}1.63$ below 2.0. The contents of cation showed in the order $Na^{++}>Ca^{++}>K^+>Mg^+$. 4. The contents of heavy metal Zn, Cu, and Pb were $ND{\sim}0.071\;mg/L$, $ND{\sim}0.012\;mg/L$, and $ND{\sim}0.043\;mg/L$, respectively. Cd was not detected in all samples. 5. As a result of these researches showed water quality in upper stream watershed of Dongjin river more affected by livestock wastes and living sewage than agricultural activity.

  • The water ejector is a low pressure high flow rate volumetric pump. It utilize the energy of a low mass flow, high velocity stream to induce a large mass flow, low velocity stream. In addition, it has a very good resistances to cavitation compared to the other type of pumps, and the maintenance cost is practically nil. There has been enormous energy loss to supply the upper part water of dam which has large potential energy as mere irrigation water in domestic multipurpose dam. The new type of energy saving system which developed through the present study can economizes over 950,000 kWh per year by mixing the upper part water of dam with the waste water by the large water ejector. This paper estimates the economical efficiency of the new type of irrigation water pumping system, and further more, represents the change of performance characteristics of large water ejector, which was adapted to this system, according to the fluctuation of upper water level that seasonally changes.

  • This study aims to determine the community patterns of benthic macroinvertebrates and analyze the relationship between the communities and the water quality in the Pungyeongjeong Stream. We collected the samples four times by season. The number of species was 28 and the dominant species were Cheumatopsyche brevilineata, Hydropsyche kozhantschikovi, Baetis fuscatus, Chironomidae spp., and so on. The range of the dominant index was 0.54 to 0.93 and the mean was 0.77. The range of the diversity index was 0.94 to 2.54, and of the mean index it was 1.75. The ratio of filtering-collectors and clingers got lower, but the ratio of gathering-collectors and sprawlers got higher as collection progressed from the upper stream to the lower stream. The results of the Pearson correlation analysis showed COD, SS, TOC and total coliforms were highly related with biotic indices of benthic macroinvertebrates. The results of cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling ordination showed that the survey sites and periods were divided into three groups. The survey sites were divided into upper stream and middle-lower stream. The survey periods were divided into winter season and other seasons. Distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates showed some characteristics according to various influence factors; however long-term and regular investigations were thought to need analysis and prediction with various statistical methods.

  • In order to analysis of the water pollution of the Anyang stream(one of the biggest branch streams of the Han River) and its main tributaries, the geological and topographical and rainfall features in its basin were investigated. To do this, the water samples were collected 23 points of the upper, mid and down of Anyang stream and its tributaries and were analyzed based on the chemical methods, Korean Biotic Index(KBI) and Saprobien systems. The Anyang stream basin has a characteristic of topographical torrential heavy rainfall like a typical rainfall feature in Korea. The concentration and the outflow rate of rainfall is very different in seasonal, and water pollution in dry season is especially severe. After 1997, although the water quality status of stream has been improved gradually, the concentration of T-N and SS at the upstream is increased due to the deficiency of facility used for collecting wastewater released from industrial factories, livestock farms and residential areas. The mainstream of the Anyang stream is classified into the 5th grade water as polysaprobic water area according to Saprobien system and the biotic index is over 2.5 in overall. Most of tributaries have 1~3 grade water limit with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic except the upper and mid streams of Samsung tributary, in which pollution status is the lowest part. Though Sambong tributary is ${\alpha}$-mesosaproboic, biotic index is low because of the appearance of abundant benthos animals in farming and fishing villages.

  • This study was carried out to investigate flora of phytoplankton in Milyang River from July 1996 to April 1997. Phytoplankton were identified 206 kinds and composed of 2 var.-for., 5 forms, 35 varieties, 164 species, 70 genera, 31 families, 14 orders, 6 classes and 5 phyla. According to the seasonal variation, 131 species were founded in summer, 109 species in spring, 108 species in autumn, and 100 species in winter, respectively. Seasonal and stationary variation of standing crops were between 10 and 5.600 cells/mι. At station 7, Cyclotella meneghiniana was bloomed 5,000 cells/mι(89.7%) in winter, and Stephanodiscus hantzschii was bloomed 3,400 cells/mι(74.3%) in spring. The number of species and standing crops were increased with proceeding from upper stream to lower stream. Important species of phytoplankton were 24 species, that are 4 species of Cyanophyta (Aphanocapsa elachista, Merismopedium glaucum, Lyngbya limnetica, Oscillatoria tenuis), 12 species of Crysophyta (Melosira varians, Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclotalla meneghiniana, Fragilaria construens var. venter, Navicula cryptocephala, Cymbella ventricosa, Gomphonema olivaceum), and 8 species of Chlorophyta (Chlamydomonas reinhardi, Eudorina elegans, Pandorina morum, Oocystis borgei, Scenedesmus quadricauda, Microspora crassior). According to the similarity index among the stations, it was generally defind as two water areas such as upper stream(station 1~3) and lower stream(station 4~7).
