  • As air combat system technologies developed in recent years, the development of air defense systems is required. In the operating concept of the anti-aircraft defense system, selecting an appropriate armament for the target is one of the system's capabilities in efficiently responding to threats using limited anti-aircraft power. Much of the flying threat identification relies on the operator's visual identification. However, there are many limitations in visually discriminating a flying object maneuvering high speed from a distance. In addition, as the demand for unmanned and intelligent weapon systems on the modern battlefield increases, it is essential to develop a technology that automatically identifies and classifies the aircraft instead of the operator's visual identification. Although some examples of weapon system identification with deep learning-based models by collecting video data for tanks and warships have been presented, aerial vehicle identification is still lacking. Therefore, in this paper, we present a model for classifying fighters, helicopters, and drones using a convolutional neural network model and analyze the performance of the presented model.

  • In conjunction with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the unmanned aerial vehicle industry is being developed to a new paradigm by combining advanced technologies such as AI, Big Data and the IoT. Aeronautical developed countries such as the U.S. are focusing their efforts on the development of the safer unmanned aerial vehicles. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute, as part of the national R&D project in 2011, had succeeded in developing the first vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAS, called Smart-UAV. However, although the development technology of the VTOL UAS is possessed, developing and operating of the VTOL UAS for commercial or military use are limited. The type certification procedure of the VTOL UAS developed by domestic technology is stipulated in the Korean Aviation Safety Act, but the Korean VTOL UAS airworthiness standards (KAS) hsve not been established. Thus, this study investigated the development trends of the VTOL UAS in Korea and abroad and national certification systems and procedures, and benchmarked the special conditions for the VTOL aircraft, announced by the EASA on July 2, 2019, to establish standards for type certificate of the VTOL UAS in Korea.

  • The UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Drone) technology has been undergoing rapid progress, accompanied with a growth in the market. However, domestic industry standards and technology lag behind such progress happening on the international scene, and in particular in developed countries. Related regulations are also deemed lacking to address the issues that arise with such developments. Meanwhile, as the rise of UAV technology is a fairly recent phenomenon, the gap between Korea and developed countries is not too big. As this technology has high relevance to information and communication technologies, it also offers ample leeway for Korea to catch up in the field of UAV. As such, this paper seeks to provide a survey of the overall technology, market and regulations concerning UAV to identify possible measures on how to address any issues that may arise through proper policies. Due to the progress made in the field of UAV technology and increased penetration rate, striking a right balance between putting in place a proper regulatory system and establishing policies that foster growth in the field has risen as a very important issue. While the importance of establishing a legal system that helps prevent possible risks is indeed important, it must also be acknowledged that excessive regulation can also hinder technological progress. This, in turn would stagnate the market and dampen the entrepreneurial spirit in the society. In the case of new, practical technologies such as UAV, a prompt establishment of regulatory systems and policy measures in terms of policies is a requisite. In brief, in order to promote progress in the UAV industry and at the same time, for public safety and the protection of privacy, there should be an appropriate level on the easing and tightening of the regulation.

  • Even though existing methods for orthophoto production using expensive aircraft are effective in large areas, they are drawbacks when dealing with renew quickly according to geographic features. But, as UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technology has advanced rapidly, and also by loading sensors such as GPS and IMU, they are evaluates that these UAV and sensor technology can substitute expensive traditional aerial photogrammetry. Orthophoto production by using UAV has advantages that spatial information of small area can be updated quickly. But in the case of existing researches, images of same altitude are used in orthophoto generation, they are drawbacks about repetition of data and renewal of data. In this study, we targeted about small slope area, and by using low-end UAV, generated orthophoto and DEM(Digital Elevation Model) through different altitudinal images. The RMSE of the check points is σh = 0.023m on a horizontal plane and σv = 0.049m on a vertical plane. This maximum value and mean RMSE are in accordance with the working rule agreement for the aerial photogrammetry of the National Geographic Information Institute(NGII) on a 1/500 scale digital map. This paper suggests that generate orthophoto of high accuracy using a different altitude images. Reducing the repetition of data through images of different altitude and provide the informations about the spatial information quickly.

  • According to the Unmanned aircraft system Traffic Management (UTM), drones are permitted to fly up to 150m above ground, which is located in the atmospheric boundary layer where there is considerable wind fluctuation due to turbulence. Although it is difficult to predict when turbulence will occur drone aviation safety could be enhanced by having a better understanding of the characteristics of vertical profile of wind in the flight area. We used wind lidar (WIndMast 350M) to observe vertical profiles of wind at the test site for aviation meteorological observation equipment located near Incheon International Airport in July and September, 2022. In this study, we utilized the observed wind profile data to propose a technique for obtaining information that could help improve the drone aviation safety. The Fourier transform analysis is used to evaluate the temporal characteristics of the horizontal wind speed at various vertical levels up to 350m. We also examined the relative contribution of the variance of wind having scales of less than an hour, a crucial scale for drone flight, to the variance of wind having all scales at each vertical altitude for days with and without precipitation.

  • The Korea market for LUAV (Light Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) weighing less than 150 kg is growing rapidly. As a result, the market for manufacturing and operating LUAV is expanding, and domestic development of parts and finished products is actively taking place. However, the flight control system and onboard software, which are key components of domestic LUAV, are largely dependent on overseas products due to the excessive cost and period required for development. This paper presented a domestic software development and certification procedure using DO-178C, a guideline for aircraft software development, and the Model-based Development method, and conducted a survey of those involved in the development, manufacturing, and certification of LUAV and analyzed the results. In addition, a case study was conducted to apply the software development plan to the helicopter FCC (Flight Control Computer).

  • Along with the increase in global volume of goods, logistics companies are trying to reduce costs by increasing the size of ships carrying cargo, increasing the efficiency of quantitative equipment at ports, and unmanned electric vehicles on land. Korean naval ports are also facing the same situation as the global trend. In the past, small and medium-sized ships such as FF, PCC, and beheaded eagles are being retired for their longevity, and their positions are being replaced by large ships such as KDX, FFG, and LST-II. In particular, large ships such as Dokdo and the next light aircraft carriers are also being prepared. Unlike general merchant ships, naval ships require periodic inspections and preventive maintenance, so repair piers such as maintenance depots are in operation. The naval maintenance depot mainly uses trailers, trucks, and truck-type cranes to carry out loading and unloading of heavy ships, and the application or development of automation and unmanned equipment performed by the private sector is inadequate, and self-improvement cases are also very weak. This study aims to improve the efficiency of the military logistics system through research on the logistics system such as transport, storage and unloading of heavy goods and maintenance products of naval ships.

  • KARI is developing a solar-electric powered HALE UAV(EAV-3). For demonstrating the technology, EAV-2H, a down-scaled version of EAV-3, is developed and after EAV-2H's initial flight test, the directional stability and control need to be improved. Thus, the vertical tail and rudder of EAV-2H are redesigned with Advanced Aircraft Analysis(AAA). Size of the rudder is increased from mean chord ratio of rudder to vertical tail, $C_r/C_v(%)=30$ to $C_r/C_v(%)=60$ and size of the vertical tail is reduced 15%. As a result, the directional control to side wind($v_1$) is improved to sideslip angle, ${\beta}(deg)=25^{\circ}$ and $v_1(m/sec)=3.54$. Also, variation of airplane side force coefficient with sideslip angle ($C_{y_{\beta}}$) and variation of airplane side force coefficient with dimensionless rate of change of yaw rate ($C_{y_r}$) are reduced 15% and 22%, respectively to minimize the effect of side wind. The empennage design of EAV-2H is verified with flight tests and applied to design of KARI's solar-electric-powered EAV-3.

  • The aerial launching UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) mainly uses a set of folding tandem wings to maximize flight performance and minimize the space required for mounting in a mothership. This folding tandem wing has a unique aerodynamic problem that is different from the general type of fixed wing aircraft, such as the rear wing interference problem caused by the wing of the front wing wake and vortex, and the imbalance of the pivot moment applied to the front and rear wings when the wing is deployed. In this paper, we have modeled and simulated various cases through computational fluid dynamics based on the finite volume method and analyzed various aerodynamic phenomena of the tandem wing type aircraft. We find that the front wing shall be installed higher than the rear for minimizing the wake influence and the rear wing can be deployed faster than the front because of the pivot moment due to aerodynamic forces. Also, considering the pivot moment due to aerodynamic force, the rear wing can be deployed much faster than the front wing. Therefore, it is necessary to consider it when developing the wing deploy mechanism.

  • A certain level of stability margin airworthiness criteria should be met to secure robustness against uncertainties between the real plant and the model in a flight control system design. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) specification of MIL-F-9490D and airworthiness certification standard of MIL-HDBK-516B uses gain and phase margin criteria of flight control system. However, the same stability margin criteria is applied at all development phases without considering the design maturity of each development phase of the aircraft. Ultimately, a problem arises when the aircraft operation envelope is excessively restricted. This paper proposes the relation of handling qualities and stability margin, and presents re-established stability margin criteria as a development phases and verification methods. The results of the research study are considered to contribute to the verification of the stability margin criteria more flexibly and effectively by applying the method to not only the currently manned developing aircrafts but also the unmanned vehicle to be developed in the future.
