The Impact of Obesity Surgery on Serum Uric Acid in People With Severe Obesity: A Retrospective Study

  • Studies indicate an association between hyperuricemia (HUA) and metabolic syndrome risk factors. On the other hand, obesity is a major modifiable and independent risk factor for HUA and gout. However, evidence concerning the effects of bariatric surgery on serum uric acid levels is limited and not completely clarified. This retrospective study was carried out with 41 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (n = 26) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 15) from September 2019 to October 2021. Anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical data, including uric acid blood urea nitrogen and creatinine fasting blood sugar (FBS), serum triglyceride (TG), and serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), were measured preoperatively and postoperative 3, 6 and 12 months. From baseline to 6 and 12 months, bariatric surgery resulted in a significant decrease in serum uric acid of patients with severe obesity (p < 0.001). The decreases in serum FBS, TG, and cholesterol of patients were significant during 6 and 12 months of follow-up (p < 0.05). However, the HDL increase of patients was not statistically significant in 6 and 12 months (p > 0.05). Besides, although patients' serum level of LDL decreased significantly during the 6 months of follow-up (p = 0.007), it was not significant after 12 months (p = 0.092). Bariatric surgery significantly reduces serum uric acid levels. Therefore, it may be an effective supplementary therapy for lowering serum uric acid concentrations in morbidly obese patients.

  • The reliability of the solder joint is affected by type and extent of the interfacial reaction between solder and substrates. Therefore, understanding of intermetallic compounds produced by soldering in electronic packaging is essential. In-based alloys have been favored bonding devices that demand low soldering temperatures. For photonic and fiber optics packaging, m-based solders have become increasingly attractive as a soldering material candidate due to its ductility. In the present work, the interfacial reactions between indium solder and bare Cu Substrate are investigated. For the identification of intermetallic compounds, both Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) were employed. Experimental results showed that the intermetallic compounds, such as Cu$_{11}$In$_{9}$ was observed for bare Cu substrate. Additionally, the growth rate of these intermetallic compounds was increased with the reaction temperature and time. We found that the growth of the intermetallic compound follows the parabolic law, which indicates that the growth is diffusion-controlled.d.

  • The syndecan family consists of four transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans present in most cell types and each syndecan shares a common structure containing a heparan sulfate modified extracellular domain, a single transmembrane domain and a C-terminal cytoplasmic domain. To get a better understanding of the mechanism and function of syndecan-4 which is one of the syndecan family, it is crucial to investigate its three-dimensional structure. Unfortunately, it is difficult to prepare the peptide because it is membrane-bound protein that transverses the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane. Here, we optimize the expression, purification, and characterization of transmembrane, cytoplasmic and short extracellular domains of syndecan4 (syndecan-4 eTC). Syndecan-4 eTC was successfully obtained with high purity and yield from the M9 medium. The structural information of syndecan-4 eTC was investigated by MALDI-TOF mass (MS) spectrometry, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. It was confirmed that syndecan-4 eTC had an ${\alpha}$-helical multimeric structure like transmembrane domain of syndecan-4 (syndecan-4 TM) in membrane environments.

Transflective liquid crystal display with single cell gap and simple structure

  • This work reports the simple fabrication of the single cell gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using wire grid polarizer. The nano sized wire grid polarizer was patterned on common electrode itself, on the reflective part of FFS (Fringe field switching) mode whereas the common electrode was unpatterned at transmissive part. However, this structure didn't show single gamma curve, so we further improved the device by patterning the common electrode at transmissive part. As a result, V-T curve of proposed structure shows single gamma curve. Such a device structure is free from in-cell retarder, compensation film and reflector and furthermore it is very thin and easy to fabricate.

  • We have developed laser absorption spectroscopy system for the measurement of excited Xe atoms in micro-discharged AC-PDP plasma. In this study, we have measured the absorption signals for the $1S_5$ xenon metastable state in the PDP cell with the various gas mixtures of Ne-Xe(1%), Ne-Xe(4%) and Ne-Xe(10%) under fixed gas pressure of 350 Torr and the eletrode gap distance of 50um. It is found that the maximum excited xenon densities are $1.2^{\ast}10^{12}\;cm^{-3}$, $1.8^{\ast}10^{12}\;cm^{-3}$ and $2.7^{\ast}10^{12}cm^{-3}$ for gas mixtures of Ne-Xe(1%), Ne-Xe(4%) and Ne-Xe(10%) respectively, in this experiment.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new type SIR bandpass filter using DAML. This filter is consisted of 2 layers with MEMS resonator layer and CPW feed line. DAML ring resonator is elevated with $10\;{\mu}m$ height from GaAs substrate. Using MEMS processing, we are able to realize SIR bandpass filter easily. Furthermore it is useful to integrate on conventional MMICs because it has CPW interfaces and ring resonator is isolated from substrate by air-gap. We optimized and measured the results that $S_{21}$ attenuation at rejected band is over 15 dB, insertion loss is inside the limit of 3 dB, and relative bandwidth is about 10 % at 60 GHz

  • In this study, we fabricated the DAMLs using surface micromachining technology as well a low loss coupler for the millimeter-wave band applications using these DAMLs. The structure of DAML is that a signal line is supported on ground plane by dielectric posts. Therefore it has advantages about the loss characteristic and the stable structure. The other advantage of the DAML process is a simple and convenient technique using 4 mask steps, even if it has a micromachining technology. The lowest loss of the fabricated DAML was obtained 2.2 dB/cm at 110 GHz. To obtain the low loss characteristic, couplers were designed and fabricated by using DAMLs. The fabricated ring hybrid coupler has the coupling of 3.58 dB and the thru of 3.31 dB at 60 GHz. We can also obtain the coupling of 3.42 dB, the thru of 3.82 dB from fabricated branch line coupler at 60 GHz.

Influence of reset pulse form on electrical characteristics in AC-PDP

  • After the square type reset pulse, the condition of remaining wall charge has been experimentally investigated in AC-PDP with VDS (Versatile Driving Simulator) system, in which arbitrary driving waveform and sequence can be used. After the self-discharge process, almost wall charges are eliminated. But some wall charges are not and its quantity is dependent on the voltage of the reset pulse. When the voltage of the reset pulse is growing, its quantity is decreased. But if the voltage of the reset pulse is above 300V, the wall voltage due to remaining wall charge is constant and its value is found out 6V. Also it is found that its polarity is always same with the one made by the reset pulse. It means that the polarity is not changed by the self-discharge.

  • 선택 반사를 보이는 콜레스테릭 액정의 planar 배열과 선택적 반사 효율과의 연관성에 대하여 FTIR spectroscopy를 이용하여 정량적으로 조사하였다. Cholesteric liquid crystal(CLC) 내 planar 배열이 잘 유도될수록 선택 반사율이 높아짐을 알 수 있었고, 배향막을 사용하지 않고 shear force 효과에 의해서만 planar 배열을 유도할 수 있었지만 완전한 planar 배열을 유도하기 위해서는 배향막을 사용하는 것이 효과적이었다.

철계 소결합금의 오스테나이트 안정성 (Austenite Stability of Sintered Fe-based Alloy)

  • In the present study, we investigated the austenite stability of a sintered Fe-based nanocrystalline alloy. The volume fraction of austenite was measured based on the X-ray diffraction data of sintered Fe-based nanocrystalline alloys, which were prepared by high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering. The sintered alloy samples showed a higher volume fraction of austenite at room temperature as compared to the equilibrium volume fraction of austenite obtained using thermodynamic calculations, which resulted from the nanosized crystalline structure of the sintered alloy. It was proved that the austenite stability of the sintered Fe-based alloy increased with a rise in the amount of austenite stabilizing elements such as Mn, Ni, and C; however, it increased more effectively with a decrease in the actual grain size. Furthermore, we proposed a new equation to predict the martensite starting temperature for sintered Fe-based alloys.
