We surveyed statistically the freshmen's achievement of the first year mathematics courses in Kwangwoon University, which were opened at the first semester of academic year 2006. In doing so, we classified the freshmen according to the Mathematical Area 'ga' or 'na' and the Natural Science or Social Science Area of Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test(KSAT) which they have chosen. We found that the freshmen who have chosen the Mathematical Area 'na' and the Social Science Area have the serious problem in studying the freshmen's math courses.

This research aims to explore the relationships between academic writing ability and 'thinking styles' (capable of representing individual differences and diversity) in engineering freshmen in Korea, and to draw educational implications for the development of instructional strategies. (Academic) Writing is not just about conveying an idea or content, it is also about the representation of writer's self. In this perspective, there has been some research conducted on writing (process) and personality. However, to date, little attention has been paid to writing ability of engineering students and its relationships with thinking styles. This study was conducted with 127 engineering freshmen as well as 67 non-engineering freshmen at H University, and students' writing ability as well as their thinking styles have been measured before and after writing class for 15 weeks. Our findings show that firstly, there was a significant difference of writing ability by majors. Second, there were significant differences in freshmen's thinking styles by majors. Third, there was significant differences of writing ability according to thinking styles. Freshmen's internal, legislative and hierarchical styles scored significantly higher in writing ability than the others. And as for the engineering freshmen, internal, external and global styles scored significantly higher in writing ability than the others. Finally, there was a weak but significant relationship between writing ability and thinking styles(hierarchical & internal). These findings are expected to provide an explanation for the development of instructional strategies of writing (related) courses in engineering school.

Objectives : The study was to examine satisfaction with their major study influences their perception of occupational consciousness among dental hygiene freshmen. Methods : The total of dental hygiene freshmen were conveniently recruited from four schools located in Gyeongsangnam-do, Ulsan and Busan city. A questionnaire was used to collect information about general characteristics and the perception of occupational consciousness and major study satisfaction. The statistical analysis was done by using the SPSS 18.0 program. Results : Dental hygiene freshmen who showed a positive their major satisfactory showed higher perception of occupational. The social recognition and position of job-consciousness was lowest at the score 2.55, harmony with a colleague is close to efficiency in duty of job-consciousness was highest at the score 3.54. Conclusions : We need a modifying and complement of the career guidance programs for dental hygiene freshmen.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of the "motivation semester" program, which was implemented for the freshmen at the K-university. The program, which was carried out for the first time among universities in Korea, was designed to help university freshmen with increasing academic motivation and adjusting university life. For four weeks, various programs such as self-leadership camp, major commitment programs, and career exploration were offered to all freshmen at the K-university. The study design was a pre-post comparison of academic motivation scores among four undergraduate departments freshmen, majoring social welfare, hospital management, radiological science, and optometry. The subjects of this study were 196 students. The T-test result, which was used to analyze the differences between pre- and post-program scores, was statistically significant(t=-2.523, P<.05). The study results showed that the "motivation semester" program significantly enhanced the academic motivation of freshmen. It was encouraged to develop programs for university freshmen to improve academic motivation in their major areas.

Undergraduate freshmen are currently encountering numerous difficulties in adapting to college life due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, several studies have underlined the need to develop interventions focused on undergraduate students' resilience during this situation. We adopted the service design method in identifying the difficulties faced by undergraduate freshmen during this pandemic, and also developed interventions for raising their resilience. The service design method is a person-centered approach which adopts the user's viewpoint in developing solutions, thereby enabling their requirements to be satisfied. Surveys and in-depth interviews revealed that undergraduate freshmen were experiencing psycho-emotional problems which were derived from schoolwork and college life. This is particularly the case with students who are experiencing greater levels of academic difficulty, and were insufficiently equipped with resources such as stress-coping strategies and social support. Four undergraduate freshmen were recruited online to test the effectiveness of a resource promotion program aimed at enhancing their resilience. This program has proved to be helpful in relieving daily/academic stress and in building relationships among freshmen, regarding which the participants showed a high level of satisfaction. The results were discussed by focusing on psycho-emotional difficulties and resources of college freshmen, as well as the effectiveness of the resource promotion program. Further research is required in order to verify the efficiency of the program and to confirm conclusions.

In order to appreciate the school dental services of the primary, middle, and high school and to get the basic data for the university dental service programs in Korea, the author had examined the oral health status of 1,300 freshmen in S University. Then, the followed results were obtained from the calculation and evaluation of DEMT index, DT index, MT index, FT index, DT rate, MT rate, FT rate, debris deposit rate, calculus deposit rate, periodontal disease rate, and abnormal jaw relation rate. 1. DMFT index in the freshmen was higher than that of the Korean youth in the same age. 2. It seems the above result to be appeared from the influence of the intake of the more carbohydrate foods in the freshmen. 3. In the freshmen, MT rate was lower, and FT rate higher than in the Korean youth in the same age. 4. The oral hygiene condition was good in 3.15% of the freshmen. 5. Calculus was not deposited in 8.69% of the freshmen. 6. In 9.69% of the freshmen, the periodontium was healthy. 7. In Korea, the school dental services in the primary, middle, and high schools must be improved. 8. There was the abnormal jaw relation in 12.92% of the freashmen.

Today rapidly changing internal and external environment of the universities such as the reduction of freshmen quota forces most universities to be facing a dangerous existence. It is an urgent thing for the universities to secure finance and good students. Because it was thought that to know freshmen's recognition of their choice of colleges would serve to establish the screening system of each university, we studied it through the survey of the freshmen in some universities. We randomly chose some national universities, private universities and educational universities to investigate who are responsible for their choice of colleges. It is shown that the influence of their high school teachers upon their students’ choosing universities is no more than 10%. As a result, the establishment of proper policy of admission to each university on its own that makes use of the characteristics of the region and the university will be effective in choosing good students.

In this paper, we analyzed the freshmen's achievements on general mathematics their GPA based on 'basic mathematics diagonal test score'. Also, we studied the achievements of students who were not passed the 'Basic Mathematics Diagonal Test (BMDT)' and had to take supplementary lessons to improve their mathematics abilities four times a week during the first semester of academic year 2008 in Mokpo National University. Before taking college entrance exam, high school students had to choose two types of scholastic area. One is on 'Ga' or 'Na' in mathematics and the other is on Natural Science or Social Science. According to the types, we classified the freshman-Ga or Na and NS or SS. We found some facts. First, a few of Ga and NS freshmen had low score on the BMDT. Second, Na and NS freshman got higher score than Na and SS freshmen on the BMDT. Third, Ga and NS freshmen who passed the BMDT got higher score on the general mathematics than those who failed the BMDT. Finally, there are correlations between achievements of general mathematics and a curriculum of freshmen who were passed test after taking supplementary lessons.

The purpose of this study is to design career learning program content and to suggest a development plan in order to assist in freshmen's successful adaptation. To accomplish this goal, first, we reviewed the precedent studies on the situations and problems of freshmen and education programs for freshmen. H. university freshmen's needs for support programs were analyzed. Second, a career learning program conceptual model was developed based on the results of precedent studies and program needs analysis. Third, the program contents for enhancing career learning competency were designed, and we suggested a development plan focusing on customized content, emotional support, and on-off line convergence program. It developed career learning tracks, big data analysis, and action planning as main content. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the development and implementation of competency-based customized career learning programs for freshmen, which will help improve the quality of career learning programs and freshmen's adaptability.

The purpose of this study is to explore methods to prevent and improve the problem of overdependence on smartphones by analyzing the differences in satisfaction with college life satisfaction of freshmen. For this, data on freshmen of KCYPS were extracted and used. The data were analyzed using non-hierarchical cluster(K-means) analysis, T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffé tests. The results of this study are as follows. First, it has been shown that freshmen who are overdependent on smartphones experience inconvenience in their daily life, withdrawal and anxiety, and resistance. Second, there is no significant difference in the level of satisfaction with college life according to gender(t=-.015, p<.05). Third, it is shown that the level of satisfaction with college life of overdependent freshmen on smartphone is significantly lower compared to that of average and moderate dependent freshmen. Based on the results, it was suggested that university-level efforts such as emotional support and learning strategy support are needed for freshmen who are overdependent on smartphones.
