We reexamined CDM texture large-scale structure (LSS) formation model. We confirmed that texture model is consistent with 4-year COBE data both in an open and a critical matter density (${\Omega}_0$ = 1) universes, and then obtained normalization for density perturbation power spectrum. We next compare the power spectrum with LSS observation data. Contrary to the previous literature, we found that texture model matches with these data in an open universe no better than in an ${\Omega}_0$ = 1 universe. We also found that the model is more likely to fit these data in a cosmological constant dominated ($\Lambda-$) universe.
Ionization of hydrogen occurs globally in our universe. The epoch of this cosmic reionization may be probed by various observations, among which the 21cm observation of neutral hydrogen at high redshift is the most promising candidate. In order to provide a mock data, we have performed the first, self-consistent simulation of cosmic reionization. We account for all possible UV-radiating sources which reside in halos ranging from minihalos to atomically-cooling halos. In order to simulate the contribution from Pop III objects, we also calculate the radiative transfer of Lyman-Werner radiation and apply a suppression criterion for Pop III objects. Our priliminary result indicates that Pop III objects ionize the universe at very high redshift and create rich, small-scale bubble structure, while sources in atomically-cooling halos ionize the universe at relatively low redshift and create large-scale bubble structure. We discuss how these two different scales and epoch may be probed by future 21cm observations.
On 2018 March 27, a 1-m telescope was installed at the SNU Astronomical Observatory (SAO) which is a newly constructed building at the site where the previous Kwanak Observatory (Old observatory; 구천문대) stood. A series of test observations have been performed on this telescope, and we report the first results from the test observations in this poster. In particular, we present seeing values, limiting magnitudes and sample images taken with a $4k{\times}4k$ CCD camera ($21^{\prime}{\times}21^{\prime}$).
Gamma ray burst, the most brightest explosion phenomena in the current universe is well suited for study of high redshift universe. We report the afterglow multi-wavelength observation and GTC spectroscopy follow up of GRB 140304A which was exploded at z=5.283. The spectrum was shown damped Lyman alpha features and a series of absorption lines S, Si, SiII*, Oi, CII, CII*, SiIV are clearly detected at common redshift. Clear optical flares are detected when X-ray flare happened and a possible gamma-ray excess also. At this conference, we report on implications for the GRB host and environments using its absorption features which place the results in context to other well studied high redshift GRBs and studies about the ejecta using its observed flaring activities.
Photometric reverberation mapping is an effective alternative to time consuming spectroscopy. It usually employs narrow bands to track the luminosity variations of broad emission lines, such as Balmer lines, and broadbands for the continuum variability. Here, we investigate the feasibility of substituting these for medium bands, with 50nm widths, that are currently being used on the SED Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse (SQUEAN) installed on the 2.1m Otto Struve Telescope at McDonald Observatory. Three targets with recent variability and/or short expected time lags were selected, and observed for 15 minutes each in the medium band containing $H{\alpha}$, and the two adjacent bands for continuum subtraction afterwards. Analysis shows that for one of the objects, SDSS J0350+0037, the pure $H{\alpha}$ emission line flux has a S/N ~ 12, so that variabilities up to ~ 8% are detectable. Thus, future observations using these medium bands on SQUEAN seem to be practical.
As a new way to explore the universe, astronomers are now performing time-domain astronomy by surveying the universe looking for new transient phenomena and taking movies of the universe with telescopes. Large-area, time-series survey of astronomical objects are uncovering many interesting, fast-changing objects that have now been poorly understood before, such as GRBs, tidal disruption phenomena, and new types of supernova. In order to characterize these new, exciting events, it is very critical to perform follow-up observations, and 1-2m telescopes can effectively contribute to such efforts. Since 2007, our group has been performing follow-up observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and interesting transients using BOAO and other KASI facilities. Here, we present results from several key transient studies that were done by using BOAO: (1) tidal disruption event Swift J1644+57; (2) SN 2011fe that occurred in M101; and (3) several GRB events. These study demonstrates the usefulness of BOAO as a powerful transient follow-up facility. Finally, we will discuss how BOAO research activities can possibly be bolstered in this newly emerging field of astronomy.
We analyze the host galaxy of the tidal disruption object, Swift J1644+57, based on long-term optical to NIR data obtained with CQUEAN and UKIRT WFCAM observations. We decompose the bulge component using high resolution HST WFC3 images. We conclude that the host galaxy is bulge dominant. We investigate optical to NIR light curves and estimate the multi-band fluxes of the host galaxy. We fit spectral energy distribution (SED) models in order to determine the stellar mass. Finally, we estimate the mass of the black hole in the center of the host galaxy based on several scale relations.
As the accuracy in the measurement of cosmological parameters is ever-increasing in this era of precision cosmology, astrophysical constraints on high-redshift universe is also getting tighter. Three dimensional (3D) tomography of the high-redshift (z>~7) universe is expected to be made through the next-generation radio telescopes including various SKA pathfinders and SKA itself, which calls for extensive theoretical predictions. We present our new simulations of cosmic reionization covering the full dynamic range of radiation sources, and also the mock data for the (1) large-scale CMB polarization anisotropy for Planck mission, (2) small-scale, kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect for South Pole Telescope project, and (3) 21-cm observations. We show that the new constraints on CMB from Planck will constrain the models of reionization significantly, which then should be tested by 3D tomography of high-redshift universe through the 21-cm observations by future radio telescopes.

Given the variety of approaches to mapping the universe of knowledge that have been presented and discussed in the literature, the purpose of this paper is to systematize their main principles and their applications in the major general modern library classification schemes. We conducted an analysis of the literature on classification and the main classification systems, namely Dewey/Universal Decimal Classification, Cutter's Expansive Classification, Subject Classification of J.D. Brown, Colon Classification, Library of Congress Classification, Bibliographic Classification, Rider's International Classification, Bibliothecal Bibliographic Klassification (BBK), and Broad System of Ordering (BSO). We conclude that the arrangement of the main classes can be done following four principles that are not mutually exclusive: ideological principle, social purpose principle, scientific order, and division by discipline. The paper provides examples and analysis of each system. We also conclude that as knowledge is ever-changing, classifications also change and present a different structure of knowledge depending upon the society and time of their design.
Identifying asteroid families, which are groups of asteroids with similar orbital properties, is important for understanding the formation and evolution of the solar system, and probing the origins of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). Although asteroid taxonomy can be used to identify and refine asteroid families, there are numerous asteroids which are not taxonomically classified yet. Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) can be useful to investigate types of that asteroids, because the telescope can observe a number of asteroids at once by its large field of view. Using KMTNet data, we confirmed that the taxonomic classification of the asteroids is possible by plotting color-color diagram. There is a clear division between C-type and S-type, but ambiguous division between C-type and X-type. In the future, we will observe and classify asteroids which are not classified yet and utilize the data to identify and refine asteroid families.
