  • Sediment-laden water leads to water quality degradation in streams; therefore, best management practices must be implemented in the source area to control nonpoint source pollution. Field monitoring was implemented to measure precipitation, direct runoff, and sediment concentrations at a control plot and straw-applied plot to examine the effect on sediment reduction in this study. A hydrology model, which employs Curve Number (CN) to estimate direct runoff and the Universal Soil Loss Equation to estimate soil loss, was selected. Twenty-five storm events from October 2010 to July 2012 were observed at the control plot, and 14 storm events from April 2011 to July 2011 at the straw-applied plot. CN was calibrated for direct runoff, and the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency and coefficient of determination were 0.66 and 0.68 at the control plot. Direct runoff at the straw-applied plot was calibrated using the percentage direct runoff reduction. The estimated reduction in sediment load by direct runoff reduction calibration alone was acceptable. Therefore, direct runoff-sediment load behaviors in a hydrology model should be considered to estimate sediment load and the reduction thereof.

  • Severe muddy water problem has been the hot issue in Korea. Because of increased nonpoint source pollutions at Kangwon province, best soil erosion management system is required to reduce inflow of nonpoint source pollutions into the waterbodies. The USLE-based SATEEC system have been developed and enhanced for soil erosion and sediment yield estimation. However, the SATEEC cannot estimate soil depositions depending on topography in the watershed, while the USPED estimates soil erosion and deposition using sediment transport capacity of the surface runoff. In this study, the SATEEC and USPED were used to determine soil erosion hot spot subbasins. For this, 54 subbasins were delineated. In general, soil erosion hot spot subbasins were identified similarly with SATEEC and USPED. However, depending on erosion and deposition patterns in each subbasin. USPED estimated soil erosion hot spot subbasins didn't match those estimated with SATEEC. For some subbasins, much deposition was expected than erosion. This indicates that SATEEC estimated soil erosion values may be overestimated for these subbasins. Thus, care should be taken when understanding soil erosion status in the watershed based on USLE-based SATEEC results. In addition, the USPED results could be used to identify the site-specific soil erosion best management practices. If the USPED and USLE-based SATEEC are combined, it would help determining soil erosion hot spot subwatersheds in economic and environmental perspectives.

  • Mediation and Arbitration are two distinct ADR processes. Their dissimilarity lies in the principle that in mediation the parties themselves decide what the resolution to the problem is, whereas in arbitration the arbitrator makes that determination. Med-Arb, hybrid of the two methods, is a fairly new ADR process dating back to the 1970s. Med-Arb capitalizes on the advantages of both mediation and arbitration, while eliminating many of their disadvantages. Mediation has the advantage of allowing for resolutions rather than decisions. Arbitration has the advantage of guaranteeing that the matter will be resolved when the procedure is over. In Med-Arb, the participants agree to be parties to mediation, and if the mediation comes to an impasse, a final settlement will be reached through arbitration. This study first explicates the origin and the development of Med-Arb in the United States. This study shows that the emergence of Med-Arb is benefited from the fact that arbitration has lost its own advantages ie, speed, cost-saving, and maintenance of an ongoing relationship between the disputants. Second, this study analyzes four cases in which Med-Arb is applied to various kinds of disputes as a tool of dispute resolution: labor disputes, entertainment disputes, will disputes, and international commercial disputes, consecutively. All those case studies show the generality of Med-Arb as a dispute resolution channel. Third, this study compares the advantages and disadvantages of Med-Arb. Finally, this study discusses the implications of Med-Arb. In particular it provides the universality of this hybrid form of dispute resolution in the East and West. For example, we show that China has its own distinctive Med-Arb system, where it has developed from ancient Confucian philosophy. Japan also emphasizes the role of an arbitrator who settles the disputes in the course of arbitration. The domestic arbitration rules of the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) have a similar process in that arbitration contains an element of conciliation. With regard to the universal characteristics of Med-Arb, it is necessary to analyze the pros and cons of Med-Arb at a deeper level in the future. One caveat is that it is necessary to handle the issues of the neutrality of the mediator-arbitrator.

  • Soil Loss by outflow of water or rainfall has caused many environmental problems as declining agricultural productivity, damaging pasture and preventing flow of water. Also, validity pondage of reservoir or dam is decreased by rivers inflow of eroded soil. Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE) is mainly used to presume soil loss amount of basin using GIS. But, because comparison with survey data is difficult, it is no large meaning that estimate calculated soil loss amount as quantitative. This research used unit sediment deposit survey data of Bo-seong basin for quantitative conclusion of soil loss amount that calculate on RUSLE. Through comparison examination with unit sediment yield that calculate on RUSLE and unit sediment deposit survey data, we can estimate resolution far RUSLE Model. As a result, cell size of 150m was estimated by thing which is most suitable.

  • The sediment delivery ratio (SDR) is widely used to estimate sediment loads by multiplying soil loss through the Revised Universal Equation (RUSLE). In this study, the SDR equation was developed for the Lake Imha watershed using soil loss calculated by RUSLE and sediment loads by the calibrated Hydrological Simulation. Program Fortran (HSPF). The ratio of watershed relief and channel length ($R_f/L_{ch}$), the ratio of watershed relief and watershed length ($R_f/L_b$), curve number (CN), area (A), and channel slope ($SLP_{ch}$) demonstrated strong correlations with SDR. SDR equations were developed by a combination of subwatershed parameters by referring to the correlation analysis. The area based power functional SDR developed in this study showed significant errors at the point right after entering major tributaries, because SDR was unrealistically reduced when the watershed area increased significantly. The $SLP_{ch}$-based power functional SDR also showed extraordinary values when the channel slope was gradual. The SDR equation that showed the highest value of the coefficient of determination also presented unrealistic changes in the sediment loads within a relatively short river distance. The SDR equation $SDR=0.0003A^{0.198}R_f/L{_w}^{1.167}$ was recommended for application to the Lake Imha watershed. Using this equation, sediment loads at the outlet of the Lake Imha watershed were calculated, and the HSPF parameters related to sediment in the uncalibrated subwatersheds were determined by referring to the sediment loads calculated with the SDR equation.

  • Roxithromycin (RXT), which is an antibiotic used to treat respiratory tract and urinary infections, is official in Korean Pharmacopoeia (KP) and is marketed in various dosage forms including tablet, granule, suspension, and tablet for suspension in Korea. This study presents how a universal and reliable method to quantify RXT in bulk drug and formulations was developed. Effects of factors including column type, buffer concentration, type and concentration of organic solvent, buffer pH, and type and concentration of mobile phase additive, were examined, and some categorical or crucial factors including the types of column, organic solvent, mobile phase additive and the buffer pH were optimized by one-factor-at-a-time approach. Subsequently, concentrations of the buffer and additive and column temperature were optimized by response surface methodology using Box-Behnken design aiming to acquire the RXT peak of good shape. The optimized method employed a Phenomenex Gemini $5{\mu}$ C18 110A ($150{\times}4.60mm$, $5{\mu}m$) maintained at $30^{\circ}C$ with the mobile phase consisting of 25 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) with 0.3 % tetrabutylammonium hydroxide and methanol at a ratio of 37:63 (v/v). Method validation results showed that the developed method was linear, precise, and accurate. Compared to the compendial methods in KP 10 that exhibited a significant tailing of the RXT peak despite using unfavorably high buffer concentrations and were not harmonized among bulk drug and formulations, this method could be universally applied to RXT bulk drug and marketed products in various dosage forms and thus was adopted in KP 11.

  • RUSLE(Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) has been widely used to estimate the soil loss amount of watersheds from rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, topographic features and cropping management condition. Rainfall erosivity is the most dominant and sensitive factor among these so that the determination of reliable rainfall erosivity is essential to estimate the soil loss of watershed. Since there has been no criterion to determine the rainfall erosivity in Korea, the empirical values, determined from the relation between the annual average rainfall and erosivity or suggested by TBR(Transport Research Board), have been used for designing the erosion control structure and controlling the soil erosion for watersheds. In this study, the procedure for estimating the rainfall erosivity using frequency analysis is proposed. The most fitted distribution function, with calculated rainfall erosivities with various frequencies and durations, has been also selected. The suggested procedure can be used to estimate the optimal value of rainfall erosivity for RUSLE in order to design soil erosion structures and control the soil erosion in watersheds effectively.

  • This purpose of this study was to determine the best enrichment medium for rejuvenating and recovering Salmonella placed in cold temperature prior to the employment of the gold biosensor combined with a light microscopic imaging system. A mixture of nalidixic-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium and Enteritidis were inoculated onto chicken (1,000 CFU/chicken). After cold injury at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr, Salmonella on chicken was enriched for 6 hr with six non-selective media including buffered peptone water broth, lactose broth, brain heart infusion broth (BHI), universal pre-enrichment broth, nutrient broth, and tryptic soy broth, and five selective media including brilliant green broth (BG), rappaport-vassiliadis R10 broth, selenite cystine broth, selenite broth, and tetrathionate brilliant green broth (TBG) for the comparison of Salmonella growth. Various concentrations of Salmonella (10, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 CFU/chicken) were then enriched for 6 hr in both BHI and BG media to select the best media. BHI was selected as the most effective non-selective enrichment medium, while BG was selected as the most effective selective enrichment medium. Finally, BHI medium was selected as the most efficient enrichment medium for Salmonella growth injured from cold temperature during processing or storage.

  • Despite the fact that the national family planning program in korea has accomplished its primary goals of fertility reduction and universal contraceptive use, the induced abortion is still high and there has been an increasing trend in the population sex ratio at birth. It seems that the changes in the imbalance of sex ratio have originated from traditonal boy preference. This indicates that much of the current family planning program can be overhauled, so that the program quality could be better controlled, by preventing the number of unwanted pregnancies and the imbalance of sex ratios. This paper aims, therefore, to examine the determinants of induced abortion through the investigation of pregnancy outcomes and their changes over time and to study the interaction between induced abortion, boy preference and the imbalance of sex ratio in Korea. The abortion rate had increased rapidly until the mid-1980s when there were about the same number of abortions as live births. Thereafter, the abortion rate has been maintained at this high level. By parity it shows a much higher abortion rate for a higher parity at all time. From the first parity, the sex composition of previous children stands out as the most important factor in deciding the pregnancy outcome at all time. The probability of a pregnancy ending in an abortion increases substantially when parents already had a son. The decline of the desired family size and the sustained strong son preference has made the sex of children a more important factor in the determination of the pregnancy outcome. Women's education has had consistently positive effects on the probability of a pregnancy ending in an abortion, but the effect shows a steady decline over time. The premarital pregnancy and urban residence also increase the abortion probability. This study suggests that the main concerns of the family planning program should be to strengthen the social support policies so as to weaken the son preference value leading to a balanced sex ratio and prevention of induced abortions.
