  • Since the centrifugal force acts on the flow in the curved channel, a transverse water surface gradient occurs and the thalweg is biased toward the outer bank. The submerged vanes may be used to solve various engineering problems of the curved channels. In order to analyze the influence of an attack angle and the distance between the vane arrays on the river bed variation and the superelevation in a bend, movable bed hydraulic experiments were conducted in a $90^{\circ}$ curved rectangular channel of a small-size gravel bed. Installing the submerged vanes in the bend increases the maximum scour depth. But if vanes are installed in a uniform obtuse angle, the scour depth may be reduced. If the flow rate in the channel bend with vanes equals to the channel forming discharge, the location of the maximum scour depth moved to the downstream and the superelevation increased. However if the flow rate is smaller than that, the location of the maximum scour depth moved upstream and the superelevation decreased. The channel bed change and the superelevation due to the installation of the submerged vanes have been dependent on the interaction of the attack angle, the flow rate, and the distance between the arrays.

  • A numerical formulation is developed to solve the linear three-dimensional hydrodynamic equations which describes wind induced flows in a homogeneous shelf sea. The hydmdynamic equations are at the outset separated into two systems. namely, an equation containing the gradient of sea surface elevation and the mean flow (external mode) and an equation describing the deviation from the mean flow (internal mode). The Galerkin method is then applied to the internal mode equation. The eigenvalues are determined from the eigenvalue problem involving the vertical eddy viscosity subject to a homogeneous boundary condition at the surface and a sheared boundary condition at the sea bed. The model is tested in a one-dimensional channel with uniform depth under a steady, uniform wind. The analytical velocity profile by Cooper and Pearce (1977) using a constant vertical eddy viscosity in channels of infinite and finite length is chosen as a benchmark solution. The model is also tested in a homogeneous, rectangular basin with constant depth under a steady, uniform wind field (the Heaps' Basin of the North Sea scale).

  • In this study, a ground motion response spectrum for the seismic risk assessment of low and intermediate level radioactive waste repositories was developed. For the development of the ground motion response spectrum, a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) was performed. Through the performance of a PSHA, a seismic hazard curve which was based on a seismic bed rock was developed. A uniform hazard spectrum was determined by using a developed seismic hazard curve. Artificial seismic motions were developed based on the uniform hazard spectrum. A seismic response analysis was performed on the developed artificial seismic motion. Finally, an evaluation response spectrum for the seismic risk assessment analysis of low and intermediate level radioactive waste repositories was developed.

  • A CPFD (Computational particle fluid dynamics) model of solar fluidized bed receiver of silicon carbide (SiC: average dp=123 ㎛) particles was established, and the model was verified by comparing the simulation and experimental results to analyze the effect of particle behavior on the performance of the receiver. The relationship between the heat-absorbing performance and the particles behavior in the receiver was analyzed by simulating their behavior near bed surface, which is difficult to access experimentally. The CPFD simulation results showed good agreement with the experimental values on the solids holdup and its standard deviation under experimental condition in bed and freeboard regions. The local solid holdups near the bed surface, where particles primarily absorb solar heat energy and transfer it to the inside of the bed, showed a non-uniform distribution with a relatively low value at the center related with the bubble behavior in the bed. The local solid holdup increased the axial and radial non-uniformity in the freeboard region with the gas velocity, which explains well that the increase in the RSD (Relative standard deviation) of pressure drop across the freeboard region is responsible for the loss of solar energy reflected by the entrained particles in the particle receiver. The simulation results of local gas and particle velocities with gas velocity confirmed that the local particle behavior in the fluidized bed are closely related to the bubble behavior characterized by the properties of the Geldart B particles. The temperature difference of the fluidizing gas passing through the receiver per irradiance (∆T/IDNI) was highly correlated with the RSD of the pressure drop across the bed surface and the freeboard regions. The CPFD simulation results can be used to improve the performance of the particle receiver through local particle behavior analysis.

  • During last 4 decades of industrial development, apartment has been rapidly disseminated throughout the nation. Its main progress, however, only appeared in quantity, not in quality. To promote housing industry in more way and to enhance peoples' life quality through the better housing environment, housing plan should be based on living items including furniture, appliances and etc. Not enough research has been done to find out living items for better house plan development and furniture design. Among living items, furniture reflects both directly and indirectly people's lifestyle and way of living. This study attempted to find out the pattern of furniture possession which people own in their bedrooms. An in depth questionnaire survey of 600 households was carried during the year 2000. A variety of patterns were found which indicated diverse living conditions within a very similar uniform multifamily apartment complex. The result of this study will be helpful to understand the living conditions in a more systematic way and to generate new concept for both residential unit plan and furniture design.

  • Considerable longitudinal rail forces and displacements may develop in continuous welded rail (CWR) track on long-span bridges due to temperature variations. The track stability may be disturbed due to excessive relative displacements between the sleepers and ballast bed and the accompanied reduction in frictional resistance. For high-speed tracks, however, solving these problems by installing rail expansion devices in the track is not an attractive solution as these devices may cause a local disturbance of the vertical track stiffness and track geometry which will require intensive maintenance. With reference to temperature, two actions are considered by the bridge loading standards, the uniform variation in the rail and deck temperature and the temperature gradient in deck. Generally, the effect of temperature gradient has been disregarded in the interaction analysis. This paper mainly deals with the effect of temperature gradient on the track-bridge interaction with respect to the support reaction, rail stresses and stability. The study presented in this paper was not mentioned in the related codes so far.

  • Potassium methylselenite ($KSeO_2(OCH_3)$) was reduced to elemental selenium, Se(0), and then doped onto montmorillonite K 10 (MK10) clay to examine the interaction between elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor and Se(0) in an effort to understand the possible heterogeneous reaction of Hg(0) vapor and Se(0) solid. The clay was used as a cost-effective support material for uniform dispersion of Se(0). The Se(0)-doped MK10 showed an excellent reaction performance with Hg(0) under an inert nitrogen gas at 70 and $140^{\circ}C$ in our lab-scale fixed-bed system. However, the precursor, $KSeO_2(OCH_3)$-doped MK10 showed a negligible reaction performance with Hg(0), suggesting that the oxidation state of selenium plays a key role in the reaction of Hg(0) vapor and selenium compounds.

  • The carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced prepregs were manufactured using electrostatic flocking technology. The powder of high density polyethylene was used as a matrix. The base film of polyethylene was prepared using a fluidized bed of polyethylene powder under the high electric field. We obtained HDPE film with uniform thickness of minimum $80\mu\textrm{m}$. And the fibers were aligned on the molten HDPE film by the electroflocking process. The short fibers with 1mm were easily electrically charged and aligned under the high electric field. The carbon fibers with high conductivity were elasily electrically charged than the glass fibers with low conductivity. So lower electric field was needed for the carbon fibers.

  • Current methods of measuring the sediment concentration of natural streams can be affected by weather conditions and have lower reliability in bed-load sections due to mechanical limits. Theoretical methods have to be used to solve this problem, but they have low reliability compared to the measured values and diverse results for the bed-load sediment concentration. This study proposes a new way to reliably determine the bed-load sediment concentration from the relation with theoretical depth-integrated concentration based on the informational entropy concept. Sediment distribution shows a uniform probability distribution under maximized entropy conditions under some constraints, so a function can be calculated for the sediment distribution and depth-integrated concentration. The parameters of a stream were estimated by a nonlinear regression method using the concentration data from a past experiment. Equilibrium N (EN) was estimated using the relation between two different formulas proposed in this study, which can ease the estimation of both the total sediment distribution and depth-integrated sediment concentration with high reliable results with an average R2 of 0.924.

  • An annular flume has been constructed in order to estimate the erosion rate of fine cohesive sediments. Under an uniform bed condition, some erosion tests for Kaolinite sediments have been conducted to examine the performance of the flume and to check the validity of experimental method and results. In this study, the critical shear stress for erosion and the erosion rate coefficient are estimated and compared with the existing measurements. It is concluded that the performance of the annular flume is good enough to conduct erosion tests and the experimental method and results are valid.
