In practice, analysis of laterally loaded piles is carried out using beams on non-linear Winkler springs model (often known as p-y method) due to its simplicity, low computational cost and the ability to model layered soils. In this approach, soil-pile interaction along the depth is characterized by a set of discrete non-linear springs represented by p-y curves where p is the pressure on the soil that causes a relative deformation of y. p-y curves are usually constructed based on semi-empirical correlations. In order to construct API/DNV proposed p-y curve for clay, one needs two values from the monotonic stress-strain test results i.e., undrained strength ($s_u$) and the strain at 50% yield stress (${\varepsilon}_{50}$). This approach may ignore various features for a particular soil which may lead to un-conservative or over-conservative design as not all the data points in the stress-strain relation are used. However, with the increasing ability to simulate soil-structure interaction problems using highly developed computers, the trend has shifted towards a more theoretically sound basis. In this paper, principles of Mobilized Strength Design (MSD) concept is used to construct a continuous p-y curves from experimentally obtained stress-strain relationship of the soil. In the method, the stress-strain graph is scaled by two coefficient $N_C$ (for stress) and $M_C$ (for strain) to obtain the p-y curves. $M_C$ and $N_C$ are derived based on Semi-Analytical Finite Element approach exploiting the axial symmetry where a pile is modelled as a series of embedded discs. An example is considered to show the application of the methodology.
This paper aims at investigating the characteristics of soil deformation by finite element method (FEM) coupling the cap model with the multi.purpose program developed by authors for the analysis of foundation displacement. The cap model as the constitutive equation has proved to be very useful to a partially saturated roils as well as rocks with high accuracy. As described in the Previous Paper (Park et al 1987) , there exist some difficulties in the determination of soil parameters in order to use the cap model at Present. However the authors have been studying to seek the method for the determination of the soil parameters from the laboratory results of conventional cylindrical triaxial test. Though the computer program advocated by foreign scholars has been kept secret, authors accomplished in performing the FEM analysis by the algorithm and program developed by authors for the cap model. Good results are obtained compared with those published already by Desai(1981) The main conclusions analyzed are as follows: 1. The cap model can be coupled with the multi.purpose computer program of authors bases on the Biot's consolidation theory without loss of generality. 2. Big difference appears in the settlement of center of the embankment between the cap modes and the modified Cam clay model in undrained conditions. The more study on which is more accurate should be performed in this respect.

In this study, effects of the density of soil and the confining pressure applied to the soil sample on the elastic moduli of subgrade soils are experimentally analyzed. Through investigation of subgrade materials of domestic expressways, five typical types of subgrade soils are selected for the experiments. A series of unconsolidated undrained triaxial tests is performed on samples prepared with various water contents and densities at the confining pressures of 1.02, 2.04, and $3.06kg/cm^2$. Initial tangent modulus is inferred from the unloading-reloading portion of the stress strain curve obtained during an individual loading-unloading-reloading test. As a result of the analysis, it is found that the effect of the confining pressure on the elastic modulus of subgrade material is well consistent with the equation proposed by Janbu, and that the elastic modulus can be related to the dry unit weight expressing the Janbu constants as exponentiial functions of it. It is also found that the water content has little effect on the elastic modulus for the samples with the degree of saturation less than 70%.
Frost heaving and thawing settlement cause unexpected stress around buried pipelines, which results in deformation and permanent demage. A large scale laboratory test has been performed to observe deformation, stress, and temperature of a buried pipe during atmospheric temperature changes. From the experimental results, the stress concentrated around the buried pipe is inevitable and deformation is caused by the frost heaving. Even though backfill materials are sandy soils which are normally assumed to be non frost susceptible, it is revealed that frost demage can happen due to drainage condition, the level of ground water table, and water content.
In reclaimed loose sandy layer with dredged soil, liquefaction by the small scale earthquake coud be occurred easily. A study has been carried out to investigate the Liquefaction characteristic on Saemangeum dredged sandy soil, and compared with other results from the literature investigation. A series of undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on dredged sandy soil of Seamangeum area. The tests were performed at the three different initial relative densities(namely 30%, 50%, 70%), different cyclic stress ratio and different consolidation stress condition. The results of this study showed that cyclic stresses (${\sigma}_d$) increased linearly with increase of consolidation ratio, but the stress ratios (${\sigma}_d/2{\sigma}^{\prime}{_c}$) were almost same. The stress ratios were increased almost linearly with increase of relative density. Compared with other sandy soil, Saemangeum dredged sandy soil showed relatively weak liquifaction characteristics.

In this study, a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the Undrained triaxial tests were performed on low-plastic silt of Pocheon stone sludge. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data. In experimental results the deviator stress showed the work hardening behaviour after reaching its yield stress. Therefore practically useful failure criterion for low-plastic silt were required. The stress-strain behavior predicted by 11 soil parameters are compared with the results obtained 9 parameters by correlation between h and ${\eta}_1$ and constant ${\alpha}$. They are poor matched each other.
A series of consolidated drained and untrained cubical triaxial tests were performed to investigate three dimensional strength characteristics of compressible sand. All specimens, which are formed by deposisting a fine sand loosely, were used. Failure strength in terms of effective stress analysis was greatly influenced by the variation of intermediate principal stress and so was failure criterion The adjusted effective frictional angles obtained by the stress state projected on the same octahedral plane showed almost same value, while the measured effective frictional angles showed considerable difference depending on the drainage conditions. Results of total stress analysis in undrained test turned out to fit Tresca's failure criterion well, but results of effective stress analysis turned out to fit Lade's failure criterion well.

In this paper, practical predictive models for soil shear strength parameters are proposed. As cohesion and internal friction angle are of essential shear strength parameters in any geotechnical studies, we try to predict them via artificial neural network (ANN) and neuro-imperialism approaches. The proposed models was based on the result of a series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests were conducted on reinforced sandy soil. The experimental program surveys the increase in internal friction angle of sandy soil due to addition of polypropylene fibers with different lengths and percentages. According to the result of the experimental study, the most important parameters impact on internal friction angle i.e., fiber percentage, fiber length, deviator stress, and pore water pressure were selected as predictive model inputs. The inputs were used to construct several ANN and neuro-imperialism models and a series of statistical indices were calculated to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the developed models. Both simulation results and the values of computed indices confirm that the newly-proposed neuro-imperialism model performs noticeably better comparing to the proposed ANN model. While neuro-imperialism model has training and test error values of 0.068 and 0.094, respectively, ANN model give error values of 0.083 for training sets and 0.26 for testing sets. Therefore, the neuro-imperialism can provide a new applicable model to effectively predict the internal friction angle of fiber-reinforced sandy soil.
The results from normally consolidated isotropic drained and undrained triaxial compression tests (NCIU and NCID) on sand with high silt content were presented in this paper. The experiments were performed on specimens of Nak-dong River sand with 63% silt content under effective confined pressures, 100 kPa to 400 kPa. From test results, Sandy silt became initially compressive but eventually appeared to provide dilatancy response throughout the entire stress-strain curve The behavior of sandy silt was more difficult to characterize than that of clay and sand due to lower plastic characteristic. Especially, the samples exhibited dilatancy development during shear after failure. The shear behavior and shear strength parameters of sandy silt can be determined as stress-strain behaviors are described by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The shear behaviors were observed increasing dilatancy volume change tendency with strain-softening tendency after failure. In this paper, the behavior of dilatancy depends on not only sand content but also fine content with low-cohesion during shear in the samples of sandy silt.
In this study, artificial cemented sand made of a few portland cement and Nak-Dong river sand was researched closely to investigate cementing effect quantitatively through unconfined tests and triaxial tests. The peak strength and elastic modulus increased and dilation of cemented sand was restricted by the cementation, but after breakage of the cementation, dilation and negative excess pore water pressure increased. In stress-strain curve, strain-softening behavior appeared in drained condition but strain-hardening behavior was appeared in undrained condition as a result of the increase of effective stress. The test was quantitatively analyzed by multiple regression models, correlating each response variable with input variable. The equations are valid only over the range investigated. Its adjusted coefficient of determination was $0.81{\sim}0.91$, and dry density is important factor for estimating strength of cemented sand.
