This paper presented an evaluation method for the efficiency uncertainty of an inverter-fed three-phase induction motor using FEM. The motor efficiency in the FEM is calculated by the IEC 60034-2-3 as in the actual test. In the process of evaluating the efficiency uncertainty, the difference between the finite element method and the actual test is the method of calculating the type-A / B standard uncertainty of the input quantity to estimate the efficiency and each losses. For the input quantities which can confirm the instantaneous values with respect to time, the type-A standard uncertainty in the FEM is calculated from the RMS values or average values having separate periods in the steady state. And, the type-B standard uncertainty in the finite element method is assumed to be zero. Also, this paper compared and analyzed the efficiency uncertainty evaluated by the proposed method and the efficiency uncertainty through the actual test.
This study was carried out to evaluate the uncertainty in the analysis of total alkaloids and reducing sugar content in flue-cured tobacco. The sources of uncertainty associated with the analysis of total alkaloids and reducing sugar were the weighing of sample, the preparation of extracting solution, the addition of extracting solution into the sample, the preparation of standard solution, the precision of calibration curve for standard solution, the reproducibility of analysis, and the determination of water content in tobacco, etc. For the calculating uncertainties, Type A of uncertainty was evaluated by the statistical analysis of a series of observation, and Type B by the information based on supplier’s catalogue and/or certificated of calibration. It was shown that the main source of uncertainty was caused by the calibration curve of standard solution, the reproducibility of analysis, the volume measurement of 1$m\ell$, and the purity of nicotine reference material in the preparation of standard solution. The uncertainty in the addition of extracting solution, the sample weighing, the volume measurement of 100$m\ell$, and the determination of water content of tobacco contributed relatively little to the overall uncertainty. The expanded uncertainty of total alkaloids and reducing sugar in flue-cured tobacco at 95% level of confidence was $\pm$0.12% and $\pm$0.54%, respectively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify main factors affecting patients' uncertainty following lumbar spinal surgery. Methods: A survey was conducted of a sample 155 post -operative patients in April to June 2010. Uncertainty and knowledge about self-care after spinal surgery and the back pain evaluation were measured. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple regressions. Results: The mean score of uncertainty level was $27.66{\pm}6.32$. Levels of uncertainty were different by age, gender, educational level, pain duration, and number of types of pain. Uncertainty was positively correlated with knowledge of post-op self-care, back pain, and mental health. The results of multiple regression indicated that knowledge of post-op self-care and mental health were significant predictors with 35.1% of the variance in uncertainty. Conclusion: A program including post-operative self-care education and mental health promotion is required to reduce uncertainty of patients with lumbar spinal surgery.
A moment-independent importance measure analysis approach was introduced to quantify the effects of structural uncertainty parameters on probabilistic seismic demands of simply supported girder bridges. Based on the probability distributions of main uncertainty parameters in bridges, conditional and unconditional bridge samples were constructed with Monte-Carlo sampling and analyzed in the OpenSees platform with a series of real seismic ground motion records. Conditional and unconditional probability density functions were developed using kernel density estimation with the results of nonlinear time history analysis of the bridge samples. Moment-independent importance measures of these uncertainty parameters were derived by numerical integrations with the conditional and unconditional probability density functions, and the uncertainty parameters were ranked in descending order of their importance. Different from Tornado diagram approach, the impacts of uncertainty parameters on the whole probability distributions of bridge seismic demands and the interactions of uncertainty parameters were considered simultaneously in the importance measure analysis approach. Results show that the interaction of uncertainty parameters had significant impacts on the seismic demand of components, and in some cases, it changed the most significant parameters for piers, bearings and abutments.

The study incorporates model uncertainty into the private equity (PE) valuation model (SWY model) (Sorensen et al., 2014) to evaluate how model uncertainty distorts the leverage and valuations of PE funds. This study applies a continuous-time model to PE project valuation, modeling the LPs' goal as multiplier preferences provided by Anderson et al. (2003), and assuming that LPs' aversion to model uncertainty causes endogenous belief distortions with entropy as a measure of model discrepancies. Concerns regarding model uncertainty, according to the theoretical model, have an unclear effect on LPs' risk attitude and GPs' decision, which is based on the value of the PE asset. It also demonstrates that model uncertainty lowers the certainty-equivalent valuation of the LPs. Finally, we compare the outcomes of the Full-spanning risk model with the Non-spanned risk model, and they match the intuitive economic reasoning. The most important implication is that model uncertainty will have negative effects on the LPs' certainty-equivalent valuation but has ambiguous effects on the portfolio allocation choice of liquid wealth. Our works contribute to two literature streams. The first is the literature that models the PE funds. The second is the literature introduces model uncertainty into standard finance models.
Purpose: Measurement results obtained under non-ideal measurement environment conditions may contain uncertain factors. As a result, the reliability of measurement results may be deteriorated. In this study, we tried to find ways to improve quality by evaluating and applying measurement uncertainty based on GUM. Methods: In the flatness measurement of semiconductor parts, uncertainty factors that could occur under actual environmental conditions of workers were derived, and measurement uncertainties were calculated, and methods for minimizing the main factors affecting the measurement results were analyzed. Results: Depending on the part and the coordinate measuring machine, it was shown that the effect of dispersion caused by repeated measurements as type A uncertainty and the effect of the calibration results of equipment as type B uncertainty have the main influence. Conclusion: Depending on the uncertainty factors of type A and type B and the influence of the total expanded uncertainty, the central value and confidence interval of the initial measurement results showed fluctuations. It is considered that analysis and measures for the main uncertainty factors are needed as quality improvement in the industrial field.
The best estimate plus uncertainty methodologies for loss-of-coolant accident analyses make use of the best-estimate codes and relevant experimental databases. Inherently, best-estimate codes have various uncertainties in the model parameters, which can be quantified by the dedicated experimental database. Therefore, this study was devoted to establishing procedures for identifying the input parameters of predictive models and quantifying their uncertainty ranges. The rod bundle heat transfer experiments were employed as a representative reflood separate effect test, and the TRACE code was utilized as a best-estimate code. In accordance with the present procedure for uncertainty quantification, the integrated list of the influential input parameters and their uncertainty ranges was obtained through local sensitivity calculations and screening criteria. The validity of the procedure was confirmed by applying it to uncertainty analyses, which checks whether the measured data are within computed ranges of the variables of interest. The uncertainty quantification procedure proposed in this study is anticipated to provide comprehensive guidance for the conduct of uncertainty analyses.
The setpoint of the reactor trip system shall be set to consider the measurement uncertainty of the instrument channel and provide a reasonable and sufficient margin between the analytical limit and the trip setpoint. A comparative analysis was conducted to find out an appropriate uncertainty combination method through an example problem. The four methods were evaluated; 1) ISA-67.04.01 method, 2) the GUM95 method, 3) the modified GUM method developed by Fotowicz, and 4) the modified IEC61888 method proposed by authors for the pressure instrument channel presented in ISA-RP67.04.02 example. The appropriateness of each method was validated by comparing it with the result of Monte Carlo simulation. As a result of the evaluation, all methods are appropriate when all measurement uncertainty elements are normally distributed as expected. But ISA-67.04 method and GUM95 method overestimated the channel uncertainty if there is a dominant input element with rectangular distribution among the uncertainty input elements. Modified GUM95 methods developed by Fotowicz and modified IEC61888 method by authors are able to produce almost the same level of channel uncertainty as the Monte Carlo method, even when there is a dominant rectangular distribution among the uncertainty components, without computer-assisted simulations.
The concectration and distribution of contaminants obtained from a contaminated land investigation or an environmental geochemistry survey constitutes the basis of a decision-making process on environmental policies or of scientific researches. As the quality of data determines the reliability of the result, the investigation plan should be adjusted according to the purpose of the investigation. In general, the effort to improve the data quality had been focused mainly on the QA/QC procedures in laboratories. The rapid progress of analytical instrument has also contributed toward improving the analytical precision to a sacrificable degree. Nevertheless, in many cases, it is not the analytical precision that needs improvement for the better precision of overall measurement process: it is rather during the sampling process in the field that is responsible for the poor precision. To assess the data quality on a measured value, ISO recommends to provide information on "measurement uncertainty" along with the measured value. The measurement uncertainty in an environmental measurement context can be explained as the statistical number that expresses the degree of the uncertainty stemming from the sampling and analytical procedures. There is a cost involved in order to improve the precision of sampling and analytical methods so as to decrease the degree of measurement uncertainty. The economical point of compromise in an investigation planning can be achieved when the allowable degree of uncertainty has been set before-hand. The investigation can then be planned accordingly not to exceed the uncertainty limit. Furthermore, if the measurement uncertainty estimated from the preliminary investigation can be separated into sampling and analytical uncertainties, it can be used as a criterion where the resources for the investigation should be allotted cost-effectively to reinforce the weakest link of the whole investigation process. This paper aims to present a method of estimating the level of measurement uncertainty of a measured contamination concentration at a site used as an example and to show how the estimated uncertainty can be applied to serve the particular purpose of an investigation.
For accurate wind resource assessment and wind turbine performance test, it is essential to secure wind data covering a rotor plane of wind turbine including a hub height. In general, we can depict wind speed profile by extrapolating or interpolating the wind speed data measured from a meteorological tower where multiple anemometers are mounted at different heights using a power-law of wind speed profile. The most important parameter of a power-law equation is a vertical wind profile exponent which represents local characteristics of terrain and land cover. In this study, we calculated diurnal vertical wind profile exponents of 8 locations in Jeju Island who possesses excellent wind resource according to the GUM (Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement) to evaluate its uncertainty. Expanded uncertainty is calculated by combined standard uncertainty, which is the result of composing type A standard uncertainty with type B standard uncertainty. Although pooled standard deviation should be considered to derive type A uncertainty, we used the standard deviation of vertical wind profile exponent of each day avoiding the difficult of uncertainty evaluation of diurnal wind profile variation. It is anticipated that the evaluated uncertainties of diurnal vertical wind profile exponents at 8 locations in Jeju Island are to be registered as a national standard reference data and widely used in the relevant areas.
