  • Composite laminated structures supported on elastic foundations are being increasingly used in a great variety of engineering applications. Composites exhibit larger dispersion in their material properties compared to the conventional materials due to large number of parameters associated with their manufacturing and fabrication processes. And also the dispersion in elastic foundation stiffness parameter is inherent due to inaccurate modeling and determination of elastic foundation properties in practice. For a better modeling of the material properties and foundation, these are treated as random variables. This paper deals with effects of randomness in material properties and foundation stiffness parameters on the free vibration response of laminated composite plate resting on an elastic foundation. A $C^0$ finite element method has been used for arriving at an eigen value problem. Higher order shear deformation theory has been used to model the displacement field. A mean centered first order perturbation technique has been employed to handle randomness in system properties for obtaining the stochastic characteristic of frequency response. It is observed that small amount of variations in random material properties and foundation stiffness parameters significantly affect the free vibration response of the laminated composite plate. The results have been compared with those available in the literature and an independent Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper presents a method to design a repetitive controller that is robust to variations in the system parameters. The uncertain parameters are specified probabilistically by their probability distribution functions. Instead of working with the distribution functions directly, the repetitive controller is designed from a set of models that are generated from the specified probability functions. With this multiple-model design approach, any number of uncertain parameters that follow any type of distribution functions can be treated. furthermore, the controller is derived by minimizing a frequency-domain based cost function that produces monotonic convergence of the tracking error as a function of repetition number. Numerical illustrations show how the proposed multiple-model design method produces a repetitive controller that is significantly more robust than an optimal repetitive controller designed from a single nominal model of the system.

  • This paper presents a method to calculate the characteristic root areas and loci band of control systems with uncertainties. First, equations of boundary curves of root areas in the case of additive and multiplicative perturbation are derived. Then, an algorithm for the calculation of the array of closed curves is presented. When the upper bound of the absolute values of frequency responses for the uncertain part, is also frequency-dependent, the frequency-dependent, terms are included in the characteristic equation of the nominal system. This lead to the boundary equations of the root, areas for control systems with frequency-dependent uncertainty. Numerical examples of the control systems with multiplicative perturbations including frequency-dependent terms are presented to verify this calculation method. Finally, its applications to the design of robust control systems, e.g., passive adaptive control systems are also discussed.

  • A robust bending frequency tracker is proposed to design the adaptive notch filter which removes the time-varying missile structural mode from the sensor measurements. To design the bending frequency tracker, firstly, the signal model is derived from the input-output relationship of Nehorai notch filter structure. Also, the time-varying nature of the bending frequency is modelled as the norm-bounded uncertainty. Based on the uncertain signal model, it is shown that the design problem of robust bending frequency tracker can be casted into that of adaptive robust $H_{\infty}$ filter or equivalently robust LMS filter.

  • Real time CCD differential photometry was performed for BT Cnc in Praesepe cluster from February to March, 1994. New 885 differential V magnitudes were obtained for thirteen nights. From the frequency analysis, we have detected two distinct pulsational frequencies of $f_1$=9.7783c/d and $f_2$=7.0153c/d. The first frequency is nearly equal to the previous result(Breger 1980), but the second one is much different. Our reanalysis of the previous data obtained by Guerrero el al.(1979) indicates that the previous result of $f_s$=5.95c/d might be uncertain; it was not detected in the power spectrum. Also it turns out that our second frequency could not be fitted to the previous data and the reanalyzed frequency($f_2$=7.8813c/d) of the previous data was poor-fitted to our data. Therefore we suggest that the second frequency which might be newly excited in the nonradial mode, has been changed over the last eighteen years.

  • This paper presents an algorithm of identifying parametric uncertainty by way of an interval model. For a given set of frequency response data from an uncertain linear SISO system of which the upper and the lower bounds of both magnitude and phase responses are represented, the proposed algorithm consists of two main parts: first, the nominal model is identified by using Least Square Estimation (LSE), and then an interval model is constructed by expanding the extremal properties of interval systems, so that tightly enclose the given envelopes within those of interval model. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate and verify the developed algorithm. The identified interval model can be used for evaluating the worst case performance and stability margins against parametric uncertainty by using some extremal properties on interval systems.

  • Resonance refers to the magnification of a structural response which occurs when a linear lightly damped system is driven with a sinusoidal input at its natural frequency. An exploratory vibration test (a natural frequency measurement test) is very important for the vibration testing of machine parts, as the value measured in an actual laboratory affects test results. For this reason, it is necessary to estimate the measurement uncertainty to verify the reliability of this type of test. In this study, measurement uncertainty is estimated based on three uncertainty factors. The uncertain factors are the measured points in the machine parts, the resolution of the vibration equipment, and uncertainty of the calibration certificate.

  • Quantitative Feedback Theory(QFT) has been used to design a robust power system stabilizer(PSS) to improve transient and dynamic stabilities of a power system. This design technique is basically accomplished in frequency domain. The most important feature of QFT is that it is able to deal with the design problem of complicated uncertain plants. A basic idea in QFT design is the translation of closed-loop frequency-domain specifications into Nichols chart domains specifying the allowable range of the nominal open-loop response and then to design a controller by using the gain-phase loop shaping technique. This paper introduces a new algorithm to compute QFT bounds more efficiently. The propose QFT design method ensures a satisfactory performance of the PSS under a wide range of power system operating conditions.

  • A modified SQI method using magnetic leakage flux (MFL) signal for underground gas pipelines' defect detection and characterization is presented in this paper. Raw signals gathered using MFL signals include many unexpected noises and high frequency signals, uneven background signals, signals caused by real defects, etc. The MFL signals of defect free pipelines primarily consist of two kinds of signals, uneven low frequency signals and uncertain high frequency noises. Leakage flux signals caused by defects are added to the case of pipelines having defects. Even though the SQI (Self Quotient Image) is a useful tool to gradually remove the varying backgrounds as well as to characterize the defects, it uses the division and floating point operations. A modified SQI having low computational complexity without time-consuming division operations is presented in this paper. By using defects carved in real pipelines in the pipeline simulation facility (PSF) and real MFL data, the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the original SQI.

  • This paper proposes a design method for improving the frequency-domain performance reliability of dynamic systems with uncertain and degrading components. Discrete frequencies are used in this method as surrogates for the frequency band of interest, and the conformance of the frequency responses to the specification at these frequencies is utilized to model the frequency-domain performance reliability. A meta-model for the frequency responses, an extreme-value event, and the set-theory are integrated to improve the computational efficiency of the reliability estimation. In addition, a sample-based approach is presented to evaluate and optimize the estimated performance reliability. A case study of a vibration absorber system showed that the proposed design method has engineering applications.
