A new method is introduced to build up organic/organic multilayer films composed of cationic poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and negatively charged poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) using the spinning process. The adsorption process is governed by both the viscous force induced by fast solvent elimination and the electrostatic interaction between oppositely charged species. On the other hand, the centrifugal and air shear forces applied by the spinning process significantly enhances desorption of weakly bound polyelectrolyte chains and also induce the planarization of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte layer. The film thickness per bilayer adsorbed by the conventional dipping process and the spinning process was found to be about 4 ${\AA}$ and 24 ${\AA}$, respectively. The surface of the multilayer films prepared with the spinning process is quite homogeneous and smooth. Also, a new approach to create multilayer ultrathin films with well-defined micropatterns in a short process time is Introduced. To achieve such micropatterns with high line resolution in organic multilayer films, microfluidic channels were combined with the convective self-assembly process employing both hydrogen bonding and electrostatic intermolecular interactions. The channels were initially filled with polymer solution by capillary pressure and the residual solution was then removed by the .spinning process.
Ultrathin metal-oxide-semiconductor(MOS) gate dielectrics have been fabricated by conventional thermal oxidation in $N_2O$ ambient. Compared to oxides grown in $O_2$, $N_2O$ oxides exhibit significantly low flatband voltage and small shift in flatband voltage. $N_2O$ oxidation induces a slight decrease in mobile ionic charge density($N_m$), fixed charge density($N_f$) and surface state charge density($N_{ss}$). This study establishes that $N_2O$ oxides may have a great impact on future MOS ULSI technology in which ultrathin gate dielectrics are required.
We investigated the influences of Ag nanoparticle (NP) arrays and surface nanohole (NH) patterns on the optical characteristics of 10-${\mu}m$-thick c-Si wafers using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. In particular, we comparatively studied the plasmonic effects of both monomer arrays (MA) and heptamer arrays (HA) consisting of identical Ag NPs. HA improved the optical absorption of the c-Si wafers in much wider wavelength range than MA, with the help of hybridized plasmon modes. The light trapping capability of the NH array pattern is superior to that of the Ag plasmonic NPs. We also found that the addition of the Ag HA on the wafers with surface NH patterns further enhanced optical absorption: the expected short-circuit current density was as high as $34.96mA/cm^2$.
Optimum conditions for the deposition of N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ ultrathin organic films using the Langmuir-Blodgett etchnique and the molecular orientation and alignment of the LB films were studied. The $\pi$-A isotherm of the N-docosylquinolium-TCNQ was measured at the air-water interface varying with the subphase temperature, subphase pH, compressing speed and amounts of solutions for spreading. The LB film was deposited under the surface pressure of 30mN.m and 45mN/m and other deposition conditions. The molecular orientation and alignment of the LB films were studied by the polarization absorption technique. The $\pi$-A isotherm showed that the stable N-docosylquinolium -TCNQ monolayer was formed on the water surface at the condition of 25$^{\circ}C$,pH 5.6, molecular density of 2.1${\times}$10S014T~2.6${\times}$10S014T/cmS02T. The LB film was deposited under the surface pressure of 45mN/m had better packing density, orientation and alignment than the film of 30mN/m.

Ultrathin atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings were found to enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Previous studies have demonstrated that $LiCoO_2$ cathode powders coated with metal oxides with thicknesses of $\sim100-1000{\AA}$ grown using wet chemical techniques improved LIB performance. In this study, $LiCoO_2$ powders were coated with conformal $Al_2O_3$ ALD films with thicknesses of only $\sim3-4{\AA}$ established using 2 ALD cycles. The coated $LiCoO_2$ powders exhibited a capacity retention of 89% after 120 charge-discharge cycles in the 3.3~4.5 V (vs. $Li/Li^+$) range. In contrast, the bare $LiCoO_2$ powders displayed only a 45% capacity retention. This dramatic improvement may result from the ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ ALD film acting to minimize Co dissolution or to reduce surface electrolyte reactions.
Enhancing the electrical conductivity of the ultrathin organic films is one of the important factors for the development of molecular electronic devices. The Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique has recently been attracted as out of the ways of deposition ultrathin films. We have studied manufacturing conditions and physical properties of Hexadecyl Dipyridinium-$(TCNQ^-)_2$ LB films made by Kuhn type apparatus. A ${\pi}-A$ isotherm shows that a limiting area is around $180{\AA}^2/molecule$ and a proper surface pressure for a deposition is around 22mN/m. A transfer ratio shows that Hexadecyl Dipyridinium-$(TCNQ^-)_2$ is able to be deposited as an Y-type. UV /visible absorption spectra shows that TCNQ dimer peak is apeared at about 600nm in LB films. In solution, $TCNQ^-$ peak is observed at about 400nm and charge transfer band at $830{\sim}900nm$. A horizontal conductivity of the Hexadecyl Dipyridinium-$(TCNQ^-)_2$ LB film is about $10^{-7}(S/cm)$.
In order to develop nano-devices with much lower power consumption for beyond-CMOS applications, the fundamental understanding and precise control of the electronic properties of ultrathin transition metal oxide (TMO) films are strongly required. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is not only an important issue in solid state physics, but also a useful phenomenon for device applications like switching or memory devices. For potential use in such application, the electronic structures of MIT, observed for TMO nano-structures, have been investigated using a synchrotron radiation angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy system combined with a laser molecular beam epitaxy chamber and a scanning photoelectron microscopy system with 70 nm spatial resolution. In this review article, electronic structures revealed by soft X-ray nano-spectroscopy are presented for i) polarity-dependent MIT and thickness-dependent MIT of TMO ultrathin films of $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ and $SrVO_3/SrTiO_3$, respectively, and ii) electric field-induced MIT of TMO nano-structures showing resistance switching behaviors due to interfacial redox reactions and/or filamentary path formation. These electronic structures have been successfully correlated with the electrical properties of nano-structured films and nano-devices.
The spin structure of Fe over layers on Cu (001), especially in region II is one of the unsolved problem for many years. We study the out - of - plane (OP) Fermi surfaces (FSs) of 7 monolayer Fe/Cu (001) films using angle resolved photo emission spectroscopy (ARPES). Ultrathin Fe was grown on Cu (001) substrate at room temperature and the experimental measurements were carried out at room temperature and low temperature. Fermi surfaces measured about $\frac{1}{4}$ of the Brillouin Zone (BZ) using photon energies ranging from 170 eV to 280 eV. Our results confirmed that ferromagnetic signal at 7 ML Fe on Cu (001) is nearly zero. These results are consistent with our recent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and surface magneto - optic Kerr effect (SMOKE) experiments. Based on our observations we have made a simple model of this system, which explains all the experimental results.
