Analysis and Prediction of (Ultra) Air Pollution based on Meteorological Data and Atmospheric Environment Data (기상 데이터와 대기 환경 데이터 기반 (초)미세먼지 분석과 예측)

  • Air pollution, which is a class 1 carcinogen, such as asbestos and benzene, is the cause of various diseases. The spread of ultra-air pollution is one of the important causes of the spread of the corona virus. This paper analyzes and predicts fine dust and ultra-air pollution from 2015 to 2019 based on weather data such as average temperature, precipitation, and average wind speed in Seoul and atmospheric environment data such as SO2, NO2, and O3. Linear regression, SVM, and ensemble models among machine learning models were compared and analyzed to predict fine dust by grasping and analyzing the status of air pollution and ultra-air pollution by season and month. In addition, important features(attributes) that affect the generation of fine dust and ultra-air pollution are identified. The highest ultra-air pollution was found in March, and the lowest ultra-air pollution was observed from August to September. In the case of meteorological data, the data that has the most influence on ultra-air pollution is average temperature, and in the case of meteorological data and atmospheric environment data, NO2 has the greatest effect on ultra-air pollution generation.

  • Recently the concentration of fine dust and ultra fine dust becomes so bad, which seriously threatens the health and even the life of people. So, government started to investigate several ways to reduce the amount of fine dust and ultra fine dust. From a few years ago it has been known that ships anchored at port emit a lot of pollution and seriously affect air quality of neighboring cities. To reduce the pollution emitted by ship AMP (Alternative Maritime Power Supply) has been proposed, which uses the electricity instead of bunker C oil or diesel. Many developed countries already installed AMP to improve air quality in port area. Korea is in the stage of planning to install AMP at port. However, there are many complicated problems to be handled before AMP installation. Due to huge initial cost and long period of construction ship owner and habour operating company are reluctant to AMP installation. And there are serious technological difficulties in constructing AMP in existing harbour. Lack of AMP core technology and operational difficulties of AMP are also big challenges to be conquered. In this study SWOT/AHP method is used to find strategic and efficient ways to handle above complicated challenges and then to vitalize the AMP installation.

Causes of Air pollution and Effects of Mitigation Policy in Korea (우리나라 대기오염배출 원인과 저감 정책 효과 분석)

  • Recently as fine and ultra fine particles become major environmental issues in Korea, it is very important to develop effective solutions to air pollution. Accordingly this study aims at detecting causes of air pollution by using models and examining if diesel price increases contribute to reduction of diesel consumption and air pollution. TSP, PM10, $NO_X$, $SO_X$, CO, and VOC are included as major air pollutants. As a result, we found invert U shape curve between pollution and income for all air pollutants except CO. Consumer price index, coal power capacity, diesel consumption, frequency of yellow dust, number of natural gas buses, number of transport business, annual average temperature, number of manufacturing businesses are also influential in explaining causes of air pollution. As diesel price increases by 1%, air pollutants decline between 0.07~0.12% in the short run. Simultaneously, the additional revenue from increases in diesel prices might be transferred to support expansion of biofuel market. Also, stronger policy should be developed to mitigate the current air pollution problem.

Comparison of Mutagenic Activities of Various Ultra-Fine Particles

  • Air pollution is increasing, along with consumption of fossil fuels such as coal and diesel gas. Air pollutants are known to be a major cause of respiratory-related illness and death, however, there are few reports on the genotoxic characterization of diverse air pollutants in Korea. In this study, we investigated the mutagenic activity of various particles such as diesel exhaust particles (DEP), combustion of rice straw (RSC), pine stem (PSC), and coal (CC), tunnel dust (TD), and road side dust (RD). Ultra-fine particles (UFPs) were collected by the glass fiber filter pad. Then, we performed a chemical analysis to see each of the component features of each particulate matter. The mutagenicity of various UFPs was determined by the Ames test with four Salmonella typhimurium strains with or without metabolic activation. The optimal concentrations of UFPs were selected based on result of a concentration decision test. Moreover, in order to compare relative mutagenicity among UFPs, we selected and tested DEP as mutation reference. DEP, RSC, and PSC induced concentration-dependent increases in revertant colony numbers with TA98, TA100, and TA1537 strains in the absence and presence of metabolic activation. DEP showed the highest specific activity among the particulate matters. In this study, we conclude that DEP, RSC, PSC, and TD displayed varying degrees of mutagenicity, and these results suggest that the mutagenicity of these air pollutants is associated with the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in these particulate matters.

A Study on The Air Pollution Reduction Performance of Mortar Coated with Photocatalyst (광촉매를 코팅한 모르타르의 미세먼지 저감 성능 연구)

  • In this paper, the performance of air pollution reduction by coating the photocatalyst solution on the mortar surface was analyzed to ensure the possibility of applying the photocatalyst to structures with a large specific surface area. The photocatalytic concentrations of the coating solution were set to 1.5 % and 3.0 %, and the types of binders were considered as experimental variables, such as ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), ordinary portland cement (OPC), and blast furnace slag. As the photocatalyst concentration increases, the air pollution reduction performance increases. In addition, as a result of the air pollution reduction performance, the NOx concentration reduction rate was the highest for UHPC, and the air pollution reduction performance increased as the blast furnace slag was replaced. Therefore, the amount of TiO2 remaining on the surface varies depending on the density of the tissue due to the difference in particles caused by the difference in the amount of TiO2 remaining on the surface.

Contingent Valuation Survey on Changes in Citizens' Perception on Atmospheric Pollution in Seoul, Korea (조건부 가치 설문조사를 통한 대기 오염에 대한 서울 시민의 인식 변화 조사)

  • A valuation of air pollution is critical for relevant policy-making for the public and research direction. This study conducted a willingness-to-pay (WTP) survey using contingent valuation method (CVM) in Seoul Korea. In detail, this study puts an emphasis on its temporal changes referred on two surveys conducted in 2014 and 2019. In reference to the previous studies in 2002, our survey indicated that the public awareness of air pollution and interests on its sources and solutions increased noticeably. Our survey showed that WTP increased significantly from 2588 to 4827 and 8240 Korean Won $month^{-1}$ in 2002, 2014, and 2019, respectively. Moreover, the percentage of respondents to pay the WTP also increased from 48% to 68% and 79% in 2002, 2014, and 2019, respectively. Our analysis based on the number of Google search on particulate matters (PMs) strongly suggests that such the noticeable increases of the public attention to air pollution is well accorded with the moment of the announcement of a standard for ultra-fine particles and the start of PM prediction in late 2013. But the Google search rate grew about 16.7 times in 2009 compared to 2014, which is much larger than the growth rate of interest and WTP between 2014 and 2019. Our results shed light on policy decision for the right person in the right place on the right time in the era of air pollution.
