  • Based on X-ray (1-8 ${\AA}$) flux data for 1972-1995 the integral spectra of solar flare energy were computed. It has been shown that the spectral index $\beta$ of the integral energy spectrum (IES) vanes systematically with the 11-year cycle phase. The interval of $\beta$-variations (0.47 <$\beta$<1) is characteristic of UV-Cet stars. The maximum energy of the X-ray flares does not exceed $10^{32}$ erg.

  • Poly(butylene terephthalate)(PBT) surface was modified by UV/ozone irradiation and the effect of UV energy on the surface properties of the irradiated PBT films were characterized by the reflectance, surface roughness, contact angles, ESCA, and ATR analyses of the film surface. The surface reflectance, at the short wavelength of visible spectrum of particularly 400nm, decreased with increasing UV energy. And the irradiation roughened the film surface uniformly in the nano scale. The maximum surface roughness increased from 110nm for the unirradiated sample to 303nm at the UV energy of $10.6J/cm^2$. The surface energy of PBT film increased from $50.5mJ/m^2$ for the unirradiated PBT to $58.8mJ/m^2$ at the irradiation of $21.2J/cm^2$. The improvement in hydrophilicity was caused by the introduction of polar groups containing oxygens such as C-O and C=O bonds resulting in higher $O_{1s}/C_{1s}$. The increased dyeability of the modified film to cationic dyes may be resulted from the photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites on the PBT films surfaces.

  • Investigation of improving the properties of UV detector which uses the wide bandgap of ZnO are under active progress. The present study focused on the design and fabrication of i-ZnO/p-inversion $layer/n^--Si$ Epi. which is characterized with very thin p-type inversion layer for UV detectors. The i-ZnO thin film for achieving p-inversion layer which was grown by RF sputtering at $450^{\circ}C$ and then annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ in $O_2$ gas for 20 min shows good intrinsic properties. High (0002) peak intensity of the i-ZnO film is shown on XRD spectrum and it is confirmed by XPS analysis that the ratio of Zn : O of the i-ZnO film is nearly 1 : 1. Measurement shows high transmission of 79.5 % in UV range (< 400 nm) for the i-ZnO film. Measurement of $V_r-I_{ph}$ shows high UV photo-current of 1.2 mA under the reverse bias of 30 V.

  • A novel monomeric UV-absorber was prepared by the reaction of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone with N-4-chlorocarbonylphenylmaleimide in the presence of triethylamine. This reactive maleimide was grafted onto polypropylene (PP) by the thermal melt-processing in a mini-max-moulder. IR spectroscopic method was used for the quantitative determination of the extent of grafting of monomeric maleimide. To find the optimal reaction conditions, the dependence of reaction temperature and time and the concentration of monomeric UV-absorber was investigated on the grafting yields. The photooxidative effect of the grafted PP was evaluated in the weatherometer comparing to the PP mixed with UV-absorbers using the carbonyl index of IR spectrum. The grafted PP showed an excellent anti-photooxidative effect.

  • Cyanobacteria are the dominant micro flora in rice-fields, contributing significantly to fertility as a natural biofertilizer. Recent studies show a continuous depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, and the consequent increase in solar UV-B (280-315 nm) radiation reaching the Earth's surface. UV-B radiation causes reduction in growth, survival, protein content, heterocyst frequency and fixation of carbon and nitrogen in many cyanobacteria. UV -B induced bleaching of pigments, disassembly of phycobilisomal complexes, thymine dimer formation and alterations in membrane permeability have also been encounterd in a number of cyanobacteria. However, certain cyanobacteria produce photoprotective compounds such as water soluble colorless mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and the lipid soluble yellow-brown colored sheath pigment, scytonemin, to counteract the damaging effects of UV-B. Cyanobacteria, such as Anabaena sp., Nostoc commune, Scytonema sp. and Lyngbya sp. were isolated from rice fields and other habitats in India and screened for the presence of photoprotective compounds. A circadian induction of the synthesis of MAAs by UV -B was noted in a number of cyanobacteria. Polychromatic action spectra for the induction of MAAs in Anabaena sp. and Nostoc commune also show the induction to be UV-B dependent peaking at 290 nm. Another photoprotective compound, scytonemin, with an absorption maximum at 386 nm (also absorbs at 300, 278, 252 and 212 nm), was detected in many cyanobacteria. In conclusion, a particular cyanobacterium having photoprotective compounds may be a potent candidate as biofertilizer for crop plants.

  • The absorption, fluorescence and fluorescence-excitation spectra of concentrated toluene solutions of selected para substituted trans-stilbene derivatives provide strong evidence for aggregation. A red-shifted fluorescence spectrum peaking at 420 nm gains in intensity as the stilbene concentration is increased. The excitation spectrum of this new emission is well to the red of the normal stilbene absorption spectrum, consistent with the appearance of a red shifted shoulder in the UV spectrum. Formation of a fluorescent ground state dimer (or higher aggregate) is proposed to account for these observations. The presence of polar substituents is crucial to the formation of this ground state complex.

  • Acyl CoA synthetase inhibitor, was purified from the culture broth of a Bacillus sp. B-6, which had been isolated from soil, by chloroform extract, silica gel column chro matography and preparative TLC. The purified acyl CoA synthetase inhibitor showed higher Antifungal activity against C. al-bicans (MIC: 8${\mu}$g/ml). Though the analysis of UV spectrum, melting point, IR spectrum, Mass-spectrum, $^1H$-NMR and $^{13}C$-NMR spectrum, the inhibitor could be identified as phenazine-l-carboxylic acid.

  • The p-fluorotoluene was vibronically excited in a jet with a buffer gas He in a corona excited supersonic expansion. The vibronic emission spectrum of the jet cooled p-fluorotoluene in the transition of S1 → S0 has been recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer in the uv region. The spectrum observed was analyzed to obtain accurate vibrational frequencies in the ground electronic state by comparing with those reported previously. The origin of the low frequency sequence bands observed in this work was discussed. Also, the absence of significant intensity of hot band resulting from the excited vibrational states in the spectrum suggests extensive vibrational cooling in the source.

  • In order to acquire images in low-light environments, it is usually necessary to adopt long exposure times or resort to flash lights. However, flashes often induce color distortion, cause the red-eye effect and can be disturbing to subjects. On the other hand, long-exposure shots are susceptible to subject-motion, as well as motion-blur due to camera shake when performed hand-held. A recently introduced technique to overcome the limitations of traditional low-light photography is that of multi-spectral flash. Multi-spectral flash images are a combination of UV/IR and visible spectrum information. The general idea is that of retrieving details from the UV/IR spectrum and color from the visible spectrum. However, multi-spectral flash images themselves are subject to color distortion and noise. This works presents a method to compute multi-spectral flash images so that noise can be reduced and color accuracy improved. The proposed approach is a previously seen optimization method, improved by the introduction of a weight map used to discriminate uniform regions from detail regions. The weight map is generated by applying canny edge operator and it is applied to the optimization process for discriminating the weights in uniform region and edge. Accordingly, the weight of color information is increased in the uniform region and the detail region of weight is decreased in detail region. Therefore, the proposed method can be enhancing color reproduction and removing artifacts. The performance of the proposed method has been objectively evaluated using long-exposure shots as reference.
