We have studied the effect of polarity, current density, current duration, crosslinking density, swelling ratio, and permeation enhancers on the transdermal flux of ketoprofen from acrylamide hydrogel. Hydrogel was prepared by free radical crosslinking polymerization of acrylamide. Drug loading was made just before transport experiment by soaking the hydrogel in solution containing drug. In vitro flux study using hairless mouse skin was performed at $36.5^{\circ}C$ using side-by-side diffusion cell, and the drug was analysed using HPLC/UV system. The result showed that, compared to passive flux, the total amount of drug transported increased about 18 folds by the application of $0.4\;mA/cm^2$ cathodal current. Anodal delivery with same current density also increased the total amount of drug transported about 13 folds. It seemed that the increase in flux was due to the electrorepulsion and the increase in passive permeability of the skin by the current application. Flux increased as current density, the duration of current application and loading amount (swelling duration) increased. As the cross linking density of the hydrogel increased, flux clearly decreased. The effect of hydrophilic enhancers (urea, N-methyl pyrrolidone, Tween 20) and some hydrophobic enhancers (propylene glycol monolaurate and isopropyl myristate) was minimal. However, about 3 folds increase in flux was observed when 5% oleic acid was used. Overall, these results provide some useful information on the design of an optimized iontophoretic delivery system of ketoprofen.

We have studied the optically compensated splay mode using reactive mesogen (RM) monomer to reduce setting voltage and phase transition time from initial bend to splay state. When the OCS cell has low pretilt angle close to $45^{\circ}C$, OCS state can be formed easily. The low pretilt angle was formed through the polymerization of UV curable reactive RM monomer at the surfaces. In this way, reorientation of the LC is well defined and thus the device shows better performances in setting voltage and phase transition time.

Hyperbranched conjugated polymers (p-HPPV and m-HPPV) with para and meta linkages were synthesized from $A_2$ and $B_4$ type monomers through Wittig polycondensation. The synthesized p-HPPV and m-HPPV were completely soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, 1,2-dichloroethane, etc. and thermal gravimetric analyses showed that p-HPPV and m-HPPV are stable up to $350^{\circ}C$. The molecular weights (from GPC), UV-visible, and photoluminescence maximum peaks of p-HPPV and m-HPPV are characterized in detail. The fabricated EL devices using the synthesized hyperbranched polymers, (ITO/(p-HPPV or m-HPPV)/Al), showed EL emission at about 507 nm and 481 nm (681 nm), respectively. Especially, EL device from m-HPPV were found to exhibit nearly white emission with approximate CIE coordinates of (0.31, 0.34) compared with (0.310, 0.316) of NTSC white color at $100\;cd/m^2$. The good photophysical properties combine with good film-form ability could make these hyperbranched polymers to be a potential candidate for the EL materials.
Photosensitive polyimides having cyclobutane or phenyl and aromatic sulfonyloxyimide units in the main chain have been synthesized and the photodegradation behavior was investigated in relation with the polymer structure. The polyimides were prepared by condensation polymerization of N-hydroxyl and sulfonyl chloride. The prepared polyimides were stable up to 25$0^{\circ}C$ without thermal degradation. It has been found that the photodegradation of polyimides upon irradiation of 254 nm UV light results from scission of N-O bonds or ring opening of imides moiety by spectroscopic measurements. The polyimides were useful as positive working photodegradable polymers. Especially, the positive tone image of polyimide containing a pyromellitic diimide moiety exhibited high sensitivity and resolution.

High concentrated $TiO_2$ nano colloids were synthesized by sol-gel method. Reactions were performed in $TiCl_4$/HCl/$H_2O$ aqueous solution and the conditions of particles such as shape, size and aggregation, etc. were controlled by polymerization and adsorption of acrylamide in surface of $TiO_2$ nano particles. And also, aminopropyltriethoxysilane was added instead of acrylamide and compared each other. The prepared colloids were well dispersed and showed the strong absorption peaks at 350nm-370nm which is blue shifted to 20-30nm, compared to macro particles. The obtained techniques from $TiO_2$ nato colloids synthesis were utilized in coating on boron nitride powders which are nonpolar and isoelectronic materials of carbon. Their surface morphology, structure, thermal stability and U. V absorption chracteristics were examined by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy), XRD(X-ray diffraction), TG/DTA(Thermogravimetric and Differential Thermal Analysis), UV-VIS(Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy).
$Eu^{3+}/Tb^{3+}$ co-doped nanocomposite containing $CeO_2$ nanocrystals was successfully prepared by an in situ sol-gel polymerization approach. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the homogeneous precipitation of $CeO_2$ nanocrystals among the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The thermal stability and UV-shielding capability of the obtained nanocomposite were improved with increase of $CeO_2$ content. The tuning of the emissive color from green and yellow to red can be easily achieved by varying the dopant species and concentration. These results suggested that the obtained nanocomposite could be potentially applicable in transparent solid-state luminescent devices.

A highly transparent interfacial layer (HTIL) to enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was prepared via a polymer-assisted (PA) approach. Poly(vinyl chloride)-graft-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (PVC-g-POEM) was synthesized via atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and was used as a sacrificial template. The PVC-g-POEM graft copolymer induced partial coordination of a hydrophilic titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) sol-gel solution with the POEM domain, resulting in microphase separation, and in turn, the generation of mesopores upon calcination. These phenomena were confirmed using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-visible light transmittance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The DSSCs incorporating HTIL60/20 (consisting of a top layer with a pore size of 60 nm and a bottom layer with a pore size of 20 nm) exhibited the best overall conversion efficiency (6.36%) among the tested samples, which was 25.9% higher than that of a conventional blocking layer (BL). DSSC was further characterized using the Nyquist plot and incident-photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra.
Optically compensated bend liquid crystal display (OCB-LCD) has many application fields owing to its fast response time and wide viewing angle. However, in order to operate the OCB-LCD in bend state, this device needs quick transitions from the initial splay state to bend state. Unlike conventional approach using transient high voltage for the transition, the OCB-LCD with high surface tilt angle, which was achieved by polymerization of UV curable reactive mesogen monomer under certain voltage, was manufactured and the cell showed bend state initially. Electro-optic and electrical characteristics of the cell were analyzed. The cell shows a fast response time owing to high surface pretilt angle and very low residual DC less than 0.1 V although another polymer layer is formed above polymer alignment layers.
Isopropylthioxanthone(ITX) is used as a photoinitiator In UV-cured inks, triggering the radical polymerization of the acrylic component of such inks and thus causing the liquid ink film to cure. Recently ITX was detected in carton packed food in Italy. In order to cope with risk issues of overseas and acquire monitoring data on ITX, we have established the method using HPLC/FLD for ITX analysis after reviewing parameters of the analytical methods. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.02 ppb and 0.1 ppb, and linearity and RSD (%) were 0.9991 and 1.09, respectively. We have investigated ITX levels migrated to food on 87 commercial products packed in carton and ITX was not detected any food. Therefore it is supposed that UV-cured ink containing ITX as photoinitiator is not currently used in printing of carton pack in Korea.
In general, the synthesis of poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT)-based block copolymers requires at least a 4-5 step process. To control the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and block ratio, the reaction conversion and time should be monitored. In addition, the reaction scale usually limited to several mg to g was difficult to increase due to the limitations of living radical polymerizations. In this study, we synthesized P3HT-b-poly(4-vinylprydine) (P3HT-b-P4VP) with a final product quantity of > 19 g via a 2-step synthetic method with an anionic polymerization. In this method, the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of P3HT-b-P4VP can be well controlled without monitoring the reaction conversion. We also studied physical properties of P3HT-b-P4VP depending on different solvent systems, which were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy.
