Uses and Gratifications of User-Created Contents: Expressing Self with Self-Produced Video Clips (동영상 UCC의 이용 동기와 만족에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This study explored three questions: (1) what are the motives of producing and using user-created contents (UCC, video clips which are produced and uploaded at various web sites by individuals), (2) what are the gratifications that users obtain from UCC, and (3) what are the differences of gratifications according to individual uses of UCC. A survey was conducted to 258 UCC users and data were factor-analyzed to find the dimensions of motives and gratifications. As for the motives of UCC uses, six factors were constructed: self-expression, private life, participation, information retrieval, rest, and entertainment, among which self-expression showed the largest variation. As for the gratifications, five factors were constructed: self-expression, rest, information retrieval, socializing, and entertainment.

Multimedia System for Developing Web based UCC Services (웹 기반 UCC 서비스 개발을 위한 멀티미디어 시스템)

  • In this paper, we design and implement the UCC services prototype system for image and video. The proposed system consists of the two components such as the multimedia processing subsystem and the metadata management subsystem. It provides the API to UCC service developers. The multimedia processing subsystem supports the media management and editing of image and video, and the streaming services of video. The metadata management subsystem supports the metadata management and retrieval of image and video. The reply management and script processing of UCC are given in the subsystem.

  • The era of Web 2.0, which is the web environment that offers end user oriented web platform, has arrived. Moreover, as the interest in UCC (User Created Contents) environment increases, it is a fact that the involvement of the users in multimedia contents is increasing rapidly. When the aim of Web 2.0, i.e. active involvement of the user, is considered, the necessity and the understanding about accessibility problem of the people who have difficulties about accessing web information, such as elderly and visually handicapped people, is increasing as well. This research analyzes the problems of virtually handicapped users to access web-based UCC services, and proposes an efficient implementation plan for a web-based UCC service that enables smooth access for them. Especially, the validity of the proposed method was verified by comparing the reaction time of the visually handicapped users with that when using the existing UCC services, through the implementation of the test page according to the plan proposed in this research.

  • The commercialization of UCC was already initiated, and there are some successful cases like 'YouTube.' However, the development level of UCC is not mature, stable yet. It's because most of the UCC users are young people and the contents are mainly about humor, funny, minor story. In other words, the practical use of UCC is not totally popularized but partly active. Therefore we want to think out 'how UCC can be utilized by many people and applicable to many industries.' UCC has enough possibility to be advanced, and it will greatly influence the society. In this paper, we will first explain Web 2.0 and the present conditions of online movies. After analyzing the problems and limitation of today, we will propose some suggestions for plans for practical utilization of UCC.

Consumer's Technology Innovation Adoption Type and the Participation Level of Multimedia UCC Services (소비자의 기술혁신 수용유형과 동영상 UCC 서비스 참여수준)

  • This study identifies the key determinants and technology innovation adoption type of participation in multimedia UCC services. This research examines how the major factors of perceived usability, self-expression, fun & entertainment, arousal, information sharing, other's positive reputation and interface easiness contribute to participation in multimedia UCC services. A sample survey of internet users was conducted, responses were collected from 629 respondents and consumer streaming data were analyzed. Some of the practical implications of the results are follows. This research have categorized that the types of technology adoption for the participation of UCC were innovator consumer, early adaptor consumer, early majority consumer, and late majority consumer. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that perceived usability, interface easiness, fun & entertainment, self-expression, arousal, other's positive reputation and type of technology adoption posited a significant effect in multimedia UCC Services.

  • The study aims to examine the UCC (User Created Contents) Copyright which use the broadcasting contents. UCC are classified by UGC(User Generated Contents), UMC(User Modified Contents), and URC(User Recreated Contents). Especially UMC and URC correspond to a problem of copyright. Following the Copyright Protection Center investigation in 2006, it reported that 83.7% UCC are infringement of copyright. In spite of remarkable the UCC copyright problem, the concrete resolution does not exist. Also it is difficult to apply the offline legal conformity because of online nature of the UCC. The study observes the UCC copyright dispute instances which use the broadcasting contents and investigates a resolution of the UCC copyright. Considering the online media nature, it tries to analyse CCL(Creative Common License) as the ODR(online Dispute Resolution). It is meaningful to search the possibility of UCC copyright problem through the online technical embodiment.

  • The User Created Contents (UCC) are traded actively on the on-line market. The current pricing policy on the UCC market is the fixed pricing, which is set by the seller once and price never changes again. However market demand and supply are changing hourly, so the studies about dynamic pricing to determine more properly have been carried out. This paper suggests dynamic pricing models for UCC by analyzing the customer's searching pattern. We propose 2 pricing models (trend change-based pricing model and relative pricing model), and experiment various status by controlling system and market variables. We demonstrated our model by computational modeling and simulation. The result of this research can be useful guidelines to increase the revenue and profit of the UCC Market.

  • 본 논문은 Web 2.0과 UCC의 개념적 논리와 기술적 진화과정을 분석하고 이를 통하여 획득할 수 있는 경제적 효과와 경영정보측면에서의 전략적 활용방안에 대하여 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 웹서비스나 텔레코즘의 법칙, 네트워크 효과 등과 같은 기술적 개념은 물론 최근 자주 언급되고 있는 롱테일의 경제나 네트워크의 경제와 같은 경제적 원리까지를 상호 연관시켜 고루 검토하였다. 특히, 최근 UCC의 형태로 실현되고 있는 Web 2.0의 원리가 이른바 분산된 다수의 결집을 통하여 경제적 효과를 끌어낸다는 '결집의 경제'와는 어떠한 관계가 있는지를 여러 가지 사례를 통하여 다각도로 분석하였다. 아울러 이를 통하여 향후 발전추세를 예측하고 기업측면에서의 시사점을 도출함으로써 Web 2.0과 UCC의 구체적 적용방안을 제안하였다.

  • UCC는 참여자들의 개인의 심리유형에 따라 참여정도가 좌우될 수 있다는 점에서 MBTI 기법을 통해 심리유형을 파악하여 TAM에 대한 UCC의 수용도를 파악하였다. 이를 위해 UCC를 활용하고 있는 광주, 전남.북 지역의 고등학생 및 대학생 244명을 분석한 결과 성격유형 중에서 외향형과 감각형이 UCC 수용에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

A Study on College Students' Experiences for UCC Assignment in a Character Education Class (교양 인성 수업에서 대학생들의 인성을 주제로 한 UCC 과제 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to have college students who took 'University Character Education Using YouTube Videos', which was opened as a liberal arts course in college, directly produce UCC assignments with the theme of personality. Despite the recent paradigm shift in learner-centered education, teacher-centered education still hinders learners' motivation to participate in classes. To solve this problem, a learner-led UCC production process is necessary for the practice of effective learner-centered education. For this purpose, a phenomenological research method was applied. The research participants were 10 students, in-depth interview was used for data collection, and Colaizzi's research method was selected for data analysis. As a result of the analysis, 9 themes, 4 theme clusters, and 2 categories were derived. The results are as follows. First, they recognized that the UCC assignments were a field of maturity, such as practicing the right thoughts and actions, and re-establishing the concept of character. Second, they said that the UCC production process was an opportunity to increase their self-esteem. Third, they showed a more mature personality by recognizing that the UCC assignments became a chance to pay attention to others beyond themselves. Fourth, they had the greatest difficulty in selecting a topic while carrying out the UCC project, and they were experiencing the limitations of high-quality projects due to the technical immaturity of UCC production. Finally, this study was concluded by discussing the educational implications based on the results. These results provide a suggestion that more effective character education can be expected when tasks led by learners will be developed and an interactive arena where students can be shared are provided.
