  • Earlier studies reported that the /o/ and /u/ phonemes of Seoul Korean were currently merging in the F1/F2 space. However, studies on perception tests have shown that rates of correctness were high, even in cases where the two vowels overlapped. This study explores whether there is another acoustic parameter that differentiates /o/ from /u/, besides the F1/F2 contrast. Seventy-five native speakers of Seoul Korean, born between 1953 and 1999, participated in a production test. The data collected were analyzed in terms of F1 and F2, H1-H2, and F0. The result shows that the /o/ and /u/ of female speakers almost overlap in the F1/F2 space for all ages, while H1-H2 values are significantly different between the two vowels regardless of age. On the other hand, the /o/ and /u/ of male speakers are largely well separated in the F1/F2 space, while the H1-H2 values between the two vowels are very close at all ages. F0 effect is relatively small for both male and female speakers, even though there is a statistically significant difference. The result of this study provides evidence that female speakers use phonation differences to distinguish /o/ from /u/, and that the F1/F2 contrast has been replaced by H1-H2 values.

  • This study ultimately aims to suggest directions for development of U-City Competitiveness Index through thorough analyses of U-City competitiveness concepts and previous research in U-City-related index. In an attempt to reach the aforementioned goals, the concept of U-City competitiveness is presented based on existing publications on informatization age, future city, and U-City. Next, insights on the development of U-City Competitiveness Index are provided via analysis of research on indices regarding U-City and future city. Finally, the process of developing UCity Competitiveness Index and cautionary comments for each developmental step has been provided. Based on the research results, U-City competitiveness refers to the ability to respond to demands of residents in a timely manner as well as to manage U-City, ICT, U-City infrastructure, and U-City services that maximizes the efficiency of urban space management. In order for proper assessment of these criteria, development of assessment tools, selection of indices, standardization, allocation of weight per index, and construction of assessment framework are required.

  • Let G = (V, E) be a connected graph. The eccentric connectivity index of G is defined by C (G) = ∑u∈V (G) deg(u)e(u), where deg(u) and e(u) denote the degree and eccentricity of the vertex u in G, respectively. In this paper, we introduce a new formulation of C that will be called the distance eccentric connectivity index of G and defined by $${\xi}^{De}(G)\;=\;{\sum\limits_{u{\in}V(G)}}\;deg^{De}(u)e(u)$$ where degDe(u) denotes the distance eccentricity degree of the vertex u in G. The aim of this paper is to introduce and study this new topological index. The values of the eccentric connectivity index is calculated for some fundamental graph classes and also for some graph operations. Some inequalities giving upper and lower bounds for this index are obtained.

  • In [2], [8], the author studied the characteristic connection as a good substitute for the Levi-Civita connection. In this paper, we consider the space $U(3)=(U(1){\times}U(1){\times}U(1))$ with an almost Hermitian structure which admits a characteristic connection and compute the characteristic connection concretely.

  • For continuous culture of cellulolytic enzymes production to saccharify food wastes, refill concentration of Mandel's medium for continuous culture was 0.5%, and refill intervals were determined to 12 hours by analysis of COD and total nitrogen concentration after 4-days batch culture in flask level. As a result, amylase and FPase productivities were 3.5 and 1.0 U/L.hr, respectively. In 10 L bioreactor, the batch culture mode was compared with fed-batch, fill-and-draw for continuous production of cellulolytic enzyme. Enzyme productivities were most high at batch culture and followed by fed-batch culture. Amylase and FPase activities were 42.3 and 5.6 U/L.hr at batch culture, and 23.0, 2.8 U/L.hr at fed-batch culture, respectively. As a result, in continuous cultivation of cellulolytic enzymes by T. inhamatum KSJ1, the mode of fed-batch was most effective in 10 L bioreactor.

  • We study the asymptotic behavior of nonnegative singular solutions of semilinear parabolic equations of the type $$u_t={\Delta}u-(u^q)_y-u^p$$ defined in the whole space $x=(x,y){\in}R^{N-1}{\times}R$ for t>0, with initial data a Dirac mass, ${\delta}(x)$. The exponents q, p satisfy $$1 where $q^*=max\{q,(N+1)/N\}$.

  • In this paper, we consider the quasilinear elliptic system $\\div(|{\nabla}u|^{p-2}{\nabla}u)=u(a_1u^{m1}+b_1(x)u^m+{\delta}_1v^n),\;\\div(|{\nabla}_v|^{q-2}{\nabla}v)=v(a_2v^{r1}+b_2(x)v^r+{\delta}_2u^s)$, in $\Omega$ where m > $m_1$ > p-2, r > $r_1$ > q-, p, q $\geq$ 2, and ${\Omega}{\subset}R^N$ is a smooth bounded domain. By constructing certain super and subsolutions, we show the existence of positive blow-up solutions and give a global estimate.

  • Neonatal lupus erythematosus(NLE) is a distinct subset of lupus characterized by cutaneous findings, cardiac conduction defects, hepatic or hematologic abnormalities. These manifestations are associated with the presence of maternal auto-antibodies such as anti-SSA/Ro, anti-SSB/La, and rarely anti-RNP($U_1RNP$) antibodies. Cases of $U_1RNP$ antibody-positive NLE have somewhat atypical cutaneous manifestation without cardiac or systemic abnormalities. We report a case of cutaneous NLE associated with $U_1RNP$ antibodies.

  • nm23-H1 gene expression has been inversely correlated with tumor metastatic potential in certain tumors including melanomas, breast carcinomas, and hepatocellular carcinomas. However, its role with respect to the invasive behavior of central nervous system tumors has scarcely been addressed Because cell motility and invasion plays an essential role in metastatic dissemination, we have studied whether motile human glioma cell(U87MG) transfected with nm23-H1 complementary DNA have any alterations in their ability to migrate and invade. There was no significant changes in the shape and size of the cells following nm23-H1 transfection. The role of nm23-H1 in glioma migration and invasion have been evaluated by in vitro simple scratch technique and brain slice invasion model Basal migration ability of nm23-H1 transfectants cell(U87MG-pEGFP-nm23) were lesser than U87MG. Accordingly, U87MG-pEGFP-nm23 didn't migrate away apparently from the tumors implanted site comparing U87MG in brain slice invasion model. These results suggest that nm23-H1 may play an important role in suppressing the human glioma migration and invasion.
