This study presents the analysis of temporal and spatial distribution of occurrences of wind gust over Korea from 2002 to 2009. The events during typhoons are excluded and the topographical effects on the wind speed are also corrected using KBC (2005). As the results, the frequency of the occurrences is as high as 286 and the higher occurrences appear mainly along the coastal area. This study also shows that the uncertainty of the appearance of wind gust during thunderstorm is much higher than in synoptic wind by comparing wind speed records for both events. This study also found that the spatial distribution of cumulative cloud quotient is closely correlated to that of occurrences of thunderstorm wind gust, which suggests the possible utilization of the cloud quotient as weighting factors in assessing wind gust risk.
The loss of nitrogen and phosphorus from sediments in two watersheds, one naturally regenerating and one artificially planted, in Sacheon-myun, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Province, were measured two years after a forest fire in 2000. Sediment losses occurred five times in the course of the year. In the artificially planted watershed, $50{\sim}140$ times more nitrogen and $54{\sim}139$ times more phosphorus were lost with sediments during heavy rains, from July to August, than in the naturally regenerating watershed. When the typhoon Rusa struck the country, 1,389 times more nitrogen and 1,647 times more phosphorus were lost from the artificial watershed. In spite of the limited scope of this study, these results suggest that artificially planted watersheds are extremely vulnerable to catastrophic natural disasters such as typhoons. Elevated loss of nutrients in the artificially planted watershed might have resulted from the mechanized silvicultural practices employed immediately after the fire. To maximize soil preservation, the timing and necessity of plantation practices should be reconsidered, and rapidly regenerating vegetation should be protected to promote nutrient uptake and to mitigate nutrient loss from burned forests.
As global warming has accelerated to weather in recent years, and The frequent floods are creating heavy rains and typhoons followed by considerable damage in Jeju. This study estimated design flood discharges and flood stage in Jeju, considering climate change in connection with RCP scenario, the 5th IPCC Report recently published. It also analyzed the period which might be subject to the risk of flooding in downstream of Oedo Stream. As a result, it has analyzed that there might be a risk of flooding when there were 80 years or more rainfall events in 35 years that rainfall would have increased by 10%, 69 years that 100 years or more heavy rain and rainfall would have increased by 20%, and 104 years that 100 years or more heavy rain and rainfall would have increased by 20%. It is expected that this study results of rainfall increasing trend caused by climate change will be helpful to minimize the damage of floods which will secure the future of Jeju.
As occurrence of gradually increasing extreme temperature events in Jeju Island, a hybrid downscaling technique that simultaneously applies by dynamical method and statistical method has implemented on design rainfall in order to reduce flood damages from severe storms and typhoons. As a result of computation, Case 1 shows a strong tendency to excessively compute rainfall, which is continuously increasing. While Case 2 showed similar trend as Case 1, low design rainfall has computed by rainfall in A1B scenario. Based on the design rainfall computation method mainly used in Preventive Disaster System through Pre-disaster Effect Examination System and Basic Plan for River of Jeju Island which are considering climatic change for selecting 50-year and 100-year frequencies. Case 3 selecting for Jeju rain gage station and Case 1 for Seogwipo rain gage station. The results were different for each rain gage station because of difference in rainfall characteristics according to recent climatic change, and the risk of currently known design rainfall can be increased in near future.
The Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge comprising two main spans and two side spans. The bridge deck is supported by three towers, an end pier and an abutment. Each of the three towers consists of a single reinforced concrete mast which reduces its section in steps, and it is strengthened by transverse cables and struts in the transverse vertical plane. The bridge deck is supported by four inclined planes of cables emanating from anchorages at the tower tops. In view of the threat from typhoons, the dynamic behaviour of long-span cable-supported bridges in the region is always an important consideration in their design. This paper is devoted to the ambient vibration measurements of the bridge for evaluation of dynamic characteristics including the natural frequencies and mode shapes. It also describes the modelling of the bridge. A few finite element models are developed and calibrated to match with the field data and the results of subsequent structural health monitoring of the bridge.
It is important to accurately predict structural responses to external excitations such as typhoons and earthquakes when designing structures for serviceability. One of the key procedures to predict reliable vibration responses is to evaluate accurate structural dynamic properties using finite element (FE) models, which properly represent the realistic behavior of buildings. In the case of historic masonry buildings, structural damage could also be caused by ambient vibrations or impacts. Therefore, the preservation plans of historic buildings for low-level vibrations or impacts should be provided by analyzing structural damages within serviceability levels. For this purpose, it is required to provide FE model construction and response analysis methods verified with field measurement data. In this research, long-term field measurement was performed for a cathedral and its dynamic properties were evaluated using measured data. Then, the model was calibrated based on the measured dynamic properties and an overall construction method for the masonry cathedral was proposed. Using the measured accelerations, the vibrations of the belfry were analyzed using the calibrated FE model and finally, the FE model for the cathedral was verified by comparing the measured accelerations with the modeled results.

Wind power generation has been viewed as a promising renewable energy to meet challenge of climate change. However, wind power is susceptible to climate change because previous investigation shows there are declining trends of the land surface wind speeds over middle and lower latitudes. Since long term variation trends is notably different from inter-annual random variation and could have notable impact on wind farm from planning perspective, observed meteorological data of Taiwan is investigated to find out long term variation trends of wind speed and its impact on wind power generation. It is discovered that wind speed in majority of stations in west coast of Taiwan have ascending trends while that of all investigated stations in east coast have descending trends. Since east of Taiwan is not suitable for wind power development for its higher likelihood suffering Typhoons and most of established wind farm locate in west coast of Taiwan, it is speculated that long term variation trend of wind do not have notable negative impact on wind power generation in Taiwan.
Overhead transmission lines are completely exposed to the environment. This causes faults in transmission lines due to natural environmental conditions. In some cases, transmission towers are damaged by typhoons and snow, as well as sleet on the transmission lines. It takes a lot of time to repair the damaged towers. For emergency restoration purposes, steel poles are installed to temporarily supply power. Before 2003, emergency restoration steel poles were made of angled steel, which required a large number of beams, bolts, etc. In addition, the foundation of the steel pole and ground wire was constructed using excavation and burial methods, therefore it required a lot of manpower and time to construct temporary transmission lines. In September 2003, typhoon Maemi, whose maximum wind speed was 60m/s, hit Korea. 'Maemi' destroyed transmission lines in the Busan and Geojea area, causing long blackouts. To reduce the recovery time to the damaged transmission lines, self-build based emergency towers were developed. self-build based emergency towers reduced recovery time from 24 hours to 4 hours or less. However, the self-build based emergency tower had no arms, so the temporary transmission lines could only be constructed without curves in line routes. In this paper, solving these self-build based emergency tower limitations, using insulated arms(designed for use with the self-build based emergency tower), shall be explained.

Coastal dune, as one part of beach system, contributes for beach recovery as well as preventing beach erosion by exchanging sands between beach and dune. Due to high tidal range, the boundary of sand dunes on the west coast of Korean Peninsula is outside the high water line during spring tide and erosion also occurs in high waves during spring high tide. This paper investigates the erosion status of the dunes located in the JangHang beach by analyzing images from camera monitoring system, and tide and wave data observed adjacent to the study site during the passage of 4 typhoons in 2012. It also studies the benefits of camera monitoring images in investigating the dune erosion and analyzing coastal topographic changes.
