  • In this study, we performed RTD measurement at the die exit of co-rotating twin-screw extruder using a non-destructive ultrasonic device. The ultrasonic device was attached at slit die and was composed of a steel buffer rod and 10 MHz longitudinal piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer. This in-line ultrasonic monitoring method is based on the ultrasonic response of $CaCO_3$ filled in polymer. The RTD is evaluated by variation of ultrasonic attenuation with time caused by change of the tracer concentration during extrusion. The ultrasonic tracer, pellet type of compounded $CaCO_3$ in polymer was used in this study. The effects of tracer concentration on RTD and flow patterns were studied. Evaluation for the residence functions at different screw speeds, feeding rates and screw configurations were also carried out.

  • People spend the majority of their time in indoor environments. Maintaining adequate indoor temperature and humidity is necessary to support health and improve quality of life. However, people with low incomes can be vulnerable because they may not be able to use effective cooling and heating systems in their homes. In this study, the indoor temperature and humidity in low-income residences over a year in Seoul, Korea was characterized. Indoor temperature and humidity were measured in three types of homes (12 rooftop residences, 16 basement residences, and 18 public rental apartments) occupied by low-income residents. Both differed significantly among the three types of residence, particularly during the summer and winter seasons. A regression model between indoor and outdoor temperature detected a heating threshold at $3.9^{\circ}C$ for rooftop residences, $9.9^{\circ}C$ for basement residences, and $17.1^{\circ}C$ for public rental apartments. During tropical nights and cold-wave advisory days, rooftop residences showed the most extreme indoor temperatures. This study demonstrates that people living in rooftop residences could be at risk from extreme hot and cold conditions.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the severity of depression and to analyze various factors related to depression in chronic back pain patients in urban-rural areas. In this study, 30 patients who suffered from back pain more than 6 months, and 30 normal subjects who had similar demographic characteristics as the patient group were evaluated using the Back Depression Inventory(BDI). Various factors such as age, sex, causes of back pain, vocational history, pain continuity, visual analogue scale(VAS), duration of pain, type of management, and urban or rural residence were recorded for the study group. The results are 1) The study group revealed higher BDI scores than the control group(p<0.05). 2) The patients who were older and had higher VAS, longer duration of pain, or previous history of surgical management for back pain, and an urban 033residence revealed higher BDI scores(p<0.05). 3) The BDI scores were not significantly influenced by the subjects' sex, causes of back pain, pain continuity, and vocational history in the study group(p>0.05). From this study, we concluded that a Psychosocial approach is required for the management of chronic back pain patients. Also, it is necessary to assess the factors, which are making depression worse in other chronic diseases for comprehensive rehabilitation.

For the survey of the residents' damage consciousness about aircraft noise, the level of aircraft noise was set as an objective variable, and gender, age, occupation. Education, the type of house, the structure of windows, the consciousness of settlement in the district, and the period of residence were set as explanatory variables. And the quantification theory I was applied to the analysis. The most influencing factor of the damage consciousness on aircraft noise was the education, the second occupation, the third age, the forth the consciousness of settlement, the fifth the period of residence, the sixth gender, the seventh the type of house, and the least influencing factor among them was the structure of windows. These findings will be a useful guideline when the government seeks to set up policies which will help solve the resident's noise problems near Taegu Airport.
