In this paper, we present a new exoskeleton-type data glove that can sense the movement of the human finger and reflect the force to the finger. The data glove is designed on the basis of the skeletal structure of the human hand, and the finger module has 1 degree-of-freedom because it includes three four-bar mechanism joints in series and a wire-coupling mechanism. In addition, the transmission ratio of the finger module is maintained at 1:1.4:1 over the entire movement range, and hence, the module can perform both extension and flexion. In addition, to enable adduction/abduction motion of the human hand, a unique MCP joint is designed by using two universal joints. To validate the feasibility of the data glove, master-slave control experiments based on force-position control between the data glove and the robot hand are conducted.

Physical computing is the concept of expanding computing to humans, environments, and objects. It draws attention as a programming learning medium based on physical outputs in integration of hardware and software. This study developed a programming learning model based on interactive prototyping using the characteristics of physical computing with a high degree of technical freedom and analyzed its learning effect in an experiment. To examine the effect of the experimental treatment, this researcher divided fifty nine 5th-grade elementary students into an experimental group and into a control group. the interactive prototyping programming learning model was applied to the experimental group, and a linear sequential programming learning model was applied to the control group. Information Science Creative Personality Test was conducted before and after the experimental treatment. Analysis of Covariance was conducted with the pre-test scores of the two groups. As a result, it was proved that there was the effect of learning at the significance level of .05. It indicates that the physical computing based interactive prototyping programming learning model is applicable to the programming learning for 5th-grade elementary students.
In this paper the tuned mass-damper-inerter (TMDI) is considered for passive vibration control and energy harvesting in harmonically excited structures. The TMDI couples the classical tuned mass-damper (TMD) with a grounded inerter: a two-terminal linear device resisting the relative acceleration of its terminals by a constant of proportionality termed inertance. In this manner, the TMD is endowed with additional inertia, beyond the one offered by the attached mass, without any substantial increase to the overall weight. Closed-form analytical expressions for optimal TMDI parameters, stiffness and damping, given attached mass and inertance are derived by application of Den Hartog's tuning approach to suppress the response amplitude of force and base-acceleration excited single-degree-of-freedom structures. It is analytically shown that the TMDI is more effective from a same mass/weight TMD to suppress vibrations close to the natural frequency of the uncontrolled structure, while it is more robust to detuning effects. Moreover, it is shown that the mass amplification effect of the inerter achieves significant weight reduction for a target/predefined level of vibration suppression in a performance-based oriented design approach compared to the classical TMD. Lastly, the potential of using the TMDI for energy harvesting is explored by substituting the dissipative damper with an electromagnetic motor and assuming that the inertance can vary through the use of a flywheel-based inerter device. It is analytically shown that by reducing the inertance, treated as a mass/inertia-related design parameter not considered in conventional TMD-based energy harvesters, the available power for electric generation increases for fixed attached mass/weight, electromechanical damping, and stiffness properties.

This study presents the effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control Quantitatively lateral drift for shear wall-frame structure system using sensitivity analysis. To this end, the element stiffness matrices are constituted to solve the compatibility problem of displacement degree of freedom between the frame and shear wall. Also, lateral drift constraint to introduce the approximation concept that can preserve the generality of the mathematical programming and can effectively solve the large scaled problems is established. And, the section property relationships for shear wall and frame members are considered in order to reduce the number of design variables and differentiate easily the stiffness matrices. Specifically, constant-shape assumption which is uniformly varying in size during optimal process is applied in frame structure. The thickness or length of shear wall can be changed depending on user's intent. Two types of 20 story shear wall-frame structure system are presented to illustrate the features of the stiffness-based optimal design technique.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the performance of Accura to that of the T-scan for indicating occlusal contacts. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twenty-four subjects were selected. Their maxillary dental casts were scanned with a model scanner. The Stereolithography files of the casts were positioned to align with the occlusal plane. Occlusal surfaces of every tooth were divided into three to six anatomic regions. T-scan and Accura recordings were made during two masticatory cycles. The T-scan and Accura images were captured at the maximum bite force and overlapped to the cast. Photographs of interocclusal records were used as the reference during overlap. The occlusal contacts were counted to compare the T-scan and Accura. McNemar's test was used for statistical significance and the corresponding P-values were calculated from a chi-square distribution with one degree of freedom. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of Accura were calculated relative to the T-scan values as a control. RESULTS. No statistical differences (P>.05) were found between the T-scan and Accura methods. The accuracy of Accura was 75.8%, sensitivity was 82.1%, specificity was 60.1%, PPV was 82.9%, and NPV was 60.1%. CONCLUSION. Accura could be another possible option as a computerized occlusal analysis system for indicating occlusal contacts at maximum intercuspation.

The generalized Voronoi graph (GVG) is a topological map of a constrained environment. This is defined in terms of workspace distance measurements using only sensor-provided information, with a robot having a maximum distance from obstacles, and is the optimum for exploration and obstacle avoidance. This is the safest path for the robot, and is very significant when studying the GVG edges of highly articulated robots. In previous work, the point-GVG edge and Rod-GVG were built with point robot and rod robot using sensor-based control. An attempt was made to use a higher degree of freedom robot to build GVG edges. This paper presents GVG-based a new local roadmap for the two-link robot in the constrained two-dimensional environment. This new local roadmap is called the two-identical-link generalized Voronoi graph (L2-GVG). This is used to explore an unknown planar workspace and build a local roadmap in an unknown configuration space $R^2{\times}T^2$ for a planar two-identical-link robot. The two-identical-link GVG also can be constructed using only sensor-provided information. These results show the more complex properties of two-link-GVG, which are very different from point-GVG and rod-GVG. Furthermore, this approach draws on the experience of other highly articulated robots.
To handle container effectively is one of the most important factors in a port because working time is linked soon into cost. Since the middle of 1990s, RMGC(Rail-Mounted Gantry Crane) and RTGC(Rubber-Tired Gantry Crane) have been developed and widely used to operate containers in the yard. The RTGC is more difficult than RMGC in the automatic control system design. Although, the RTGC is largely advantaged to free driving environment, it has some considerable disadvantages in the system operating. In general, the problems are due to tire slip and lack of tire pressure etc. Therefore, a desirable research result has not been shown in this time. So, in this paper, we propose a new approach to design tracking control system for the RTGC in which the mathematical modeling is included. From the simulation results, the control performance of the designed control systems is evaluated.
In recent years the monitoring of structural behavior through acquisition of vibrational data has become common practice. In addition, recent advances in sensor development have made the collection of diverse dynamic information feasible. Other than the commonly collected acceleration information, Global Position System (GPS) receivers and non-contact, optical techniques have also allowed for the synchronous collection of highly accurate displacement data. The fusion of this heterogeneous information is crucial for the successful monitoring and control of structural systems especially when aiming at real-time estimation. This task is not a straightforward one as measurements are inevitably corrupted with some percentage of noise, often leading to imprecise estimation. Quite commonly, the presence of noise in acceleration signals results in drifting estimates of displacement states, as a result of numerical integration. In this study, a new approach based on a time domain identification method, namely the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), is proposed for correcting the "drift effect" in displacement or rotation estimates in an online manner, i.e., on the fly as data is attained. The method relies on the introduction of artificial white noise (WN) observations into the filter equations, which is shown to achieve an online correction of the drift issue, thus yielding highly accurate motion data. The proposed approach is demonstrated for two cases; firstly, the illustrative example of a single degree of freedom linear oscillator is examined, where availability of acceleration measurements is exclusively assumed. Secondly, a field inspired implementation is presented for the torsional identification of a tall tower structure, where acceleration measurements are obtained at a high sampling rate and non-collocated GPS displacement measurements are assumed available at a lower sampling rate. A multi-rate Kalman Filter is incorporated into the analysis in order to successfully fuse data sampled at different rates.

This paper deals with the vibration absorbers of gravitational and centrifugal pendulum types for vibration controls of ship's substructures such as radarmasts, bridgewings and funnels. The mathematical model of such a vibrating system with an absorber is described as a 2 degree of freedom system and an efficient formulation for optimum design of the absorber is presented. For investigation applicability of the two types of the absorbers to a structure system, numerical calculations and experiments hove been performed with variation of mass ratios for each type. According to the results of investigations, the vibration absorber of gravitational type proved to be more useful and efficient than one of centrifugal pendulum type in a view point of mass ratio.

As avionics and mechanical devices have been developed, the size of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is getting smaller. However, the complicated and accurate missions are provided to the UAV. Among various types of UAVs, quadrotors are widely used for their availability by virtue of simple structure and hovering function. However, the control of quadrotor is highly constrained, because the quadrotor is an under-actuated system which has only 4 actuator inputs. To deal with this under-actuated problem, a new quadrotor model with two more actuators in addition to the 4 propeller inputs is provided to make the system fully-actuated. For the proposed model, a controller is designed using feedback linearization methods. To validate the model and to verify the performance of the proposed controller, numerical simulation is performed.
