  • Many studies tried to develop a 3D display based stereo test as a substitute for the conventional stereo test. Although many 3D monitor based stereo tests have various advantages over the conventional stereo tests with printed stimuli, they have a crucial limitation in manipulating disparity. The least value for disparity manipulation is one pixel, which is too big to screen the normal stereo acuity in pc environment with a short viewing distance. In this explorative study, a Gabor image was employed as a test stimulus, because its position can be manipulated by changing its phase information, which allows sub-pixel manipulation for disparity. Instead of employing the methods of the conventional stereo tests where measurement was made only once for each of a wide range of disparity values, 10 replications were administrated for each of 6 disparity levels. The results from the test using Gabor images were compared with those using random dot stimulus because the latter stimulus was exactly the same as that of the conventional stereo test. The correlation coefficient between two tests was found to be moderate. After one month later, the whole test was repeated in the same settings. The correlation coefficient between test and retest results from Gabor images was found to be as high as that from a random dot stimulus, implying high test-retest reliability. These results suggest that a Gabor stimulus could be used as a test stimulus for the valid and reliable stereo test, even in the limited condition, such as 3D environment with a short viewing distance and a condition for evaluating the stereo acuity very precisely.

  • High-pressure synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction experiments were performed on natural illite (K0.65Al2(Al0.65Si3.35)O10(OH)2) using diamond anvil cell (DAC) under two different pressure transmitting media (PTM), i.e., water and ME41 (methanol:ethanol = 4:1 by volume). When using water as PTM, occasional heating was applied up to about 250℃ while reaching pressure up to 2.7 GPa in order to promote both hydrostatic conditions and intercalation of water molecules into the layer. When using ME41, pressure was reached up to 6.9 GPa at room temperature. Under these conditions, illite did not show any expansion of interlayer distance or phase transitions. Pressure-volume data were used to derive bulk moduli (K0) of 45(3) GPa under water and 51(3) GPa under ME41 PTM. indicating no difference in compressibility within the analytical error. Linear compressibilities were then calculated to be βa = 0.0025, βb = 0.0029, βc = 0.0144 under ME41 PTM showing the c-axis is ca. six times more compressible than a- and b-axes. These elastic behaviors of illite were compared to muscovite, one of its structural analogues.

  • This study was conducted to develop optimal solid culture medium for Tricholoma matsutake. As the solid matrix, granitic soil, perlite, vermiculate, pine sawdust and peat moss were compared regarding their effected on mycelial growth. Ergosterol content which is a fungal wall component was used as the growth index of the mycelia. Among the various solid matrixes, the granitic soil, perlite and mixture of the two supported the growth most. Barely flour appeared to be very effective on the stimulating of the mycelial growth when added to the solid matrix. An mixture of the matrix contained an even (1:1:1:1, v/v/v/v) mixture of granitic soil, perlite, vermiculate and pine sawdust. T. matsutake started growth 2 weeks after inoculation and reached stationary growth phase after 8th weeks in the solid matrix mixture. The mycelial density in the solid matrix was 7 times higher than that in fairy-ring soil. In addition, 30~70% water content and 10% humus soil in the solid matrix also supported good growth suggesting that T. matsutake needs humus soil for a nutrient sources. The solid matrix developed in the present study could be used to study physiological characteristics of T. matsutake as well.

  • An experiment was performed to investigate the combined effect of preservatives and the synergistic effect of sodium chloride to them on the inhibition of bacterial growth. Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium were cultured with or without shaking in liquid media (pH 6) of tryptone-glucose-yeast extract or tryptic soy broth which contained 0.1% potassium sorbate and/or 0.03% sodium benzoate, equivalent to half of the maximum permissible levels, respectively. The growth of E. coli was more inhibited with one or both of the two preservatives by shaking culture than by non-shaking culture. For S. typhimurium the single treatment of the preservatives did not show inhibitory effect whereas the combined treatment of them showed bacteriostatic effect in shaking culture and a prolongation of lag phase in non-shaking culture. Addition of 2% sodium chloride to either potassium sorbate or potassium sorbate plus sodium benzoate remarkably increased the growth inhibition of E. coli for non-shaking cultivation but no effect observed for shaking cultivation. S. typhimurium was more sensitive to the addition of sodium chloride than E. coli in both shaking and non-shaking culture to show lower viable cell counts than initial numbers.

  • We have introduced a new approach to obtain the conductivity information of subsurface using Cagniard impedance over two-dimensional (2-D) model in the presence of horizontal magnetic dipole source with the frequency range of $1\;kHz\~1\;MHz$. Firstly, we designed the method to calculate the apparent resistivity from the ratio between horizontal electric and magnetic fields, Cagniard impedance, considering the source effects when the plane wave assumption is failed in finite source EM problem, and applied it to several numerical models such as homogeneous half-space or layered-earth model. It successfully provided subsurface information even though it is still rough, while the one with plane wave assumption is hard to give useful information. Next, through analyzing Cagniard impedance and apparent resistivity considering source effect over 2-D models containing conductive- or resistive-block, we showed that the possibility of obtaining conductivities of background media and anomaly using this approach. In addition, the apparent resistivity considering source effect and phase pseudosections constructed from Cagniard impedance over the isolated conductive- and resistive block model well demonstrated outlines of anomalies and conductivity distribution even though there were some distortions came from sidelobes caused by 2-D body.

  • The present study was performed to improve the technique used for fermenting the mushroom growth medium. Taxonomic analysis of 16S rDNA sequence from the predominant Bacillus strain CY-24 isolated during the fermentation phase of the rice straw medium identified it as Bacillus licheniformis. In addition, the growth environment of B. licheniformis was also examined in this study, which revealed the optimal growth temperature and pH to be 30 ℃ and 6.0, respectively. This study also revealed that carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) and polygalacturonase (PGase) enzymes isolated from B. licheniformis achieved their maximal activities at 50 ℃ and 60 ℃ respectively. Furthermore, the study confirmed that the two enzymes, i.e., CMCase and PGase in B. licheniformis are stable at temperatures above 60 ℃. The present study thus demonstrates that B. licheniformis CY-24 possesses excellent enzymatic properties. It also reveals that the action of enzymes during the production of growth mediums used for the cultivation of mushrooms is closely associated with the promotion of fermentation and softening of the rice straw. Overall, this study provides elementary information regarding the role of B. licheniformis enzymes during growth medium fermentation for Agaricus bisporus cultivation.

  • Purpose : To determine the usefulness of additional Mn-DPDP MRI for preoperative evaluation of the patients with colorectal cancers by comparison of dual-phase CT scan, Mn-DPDP enhanced MRI and combination of CT and MRI. Materials and Methods : Fifty-three colorectal cancer patients with 92 metastatic nodules underwent dualphase (arterial and portal) helical CT scan and Mn-DPDP MRI prior to surgery. The indication of MRI was presence or suspected of having metastatic lesions at CT scan and/or increased serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels (10 ng/mL or more). The diagnosis was established by the combination of findings at surgery, intraoperative ultrasonography, and histopathologic examination. Two radiologists interpreted CT, MRI, and combination of CT-MRI at discrete sessions and evaluated each lesion for location, size, and intrinsic characteristics. The lesions were divided into three groups according to their diameter; 1cm<, 1-2 cm, and >2 cm. Diagnostic accuracy was evaluated using the alternative-free response receiver operating characteristic method. Detection and false positive rate were also evaluated. Results : In the lesions smaller than 1 cm, detection rate of combined CT-MRI was superior to CT or MRI alone (82%, p=0.036). The mean accuracy (Az values) of combined CT and MRI was significantly higher than that of CT in the lesions smaller than 2 cm (1 cm<, p=0.034; 1-2 cm, p=0.045). However, there was no significant difference between MRI and combined CT-MRI. The false positive rate of CT was higher than those of combined CT-MR in the lesions smaller than 1 cm (28%, p=0.023). Conclusion : Additional MRI using Mn-DPDP besides routine CT scan was helpful in differentiating the hepatic lesions (<2 cm) and could improve detection of the small hepatic metastases (<1 cm) from colorectal carcinoma.

  • An Adaptive Clustering-based Collaborative Filtering Technique was proposed to solve the fundamental problems of collaborative filtering, such as cold-start problems, scalability problems and data sparsity problems. Previous collaborative filtering techniques were carried out according to the recommendations based on the predicted preference of the user to a particular item using a similar item subset and a similar user subset composed based on the preference of users to items. For this reason, if the density of the user preference matrix is low, the reliability of the recommendation system will decrease rapidly. Therefore, the difficulty of creating a similar item subset and similar user subset will be increased. In addition, as the scale of service increases, the time needed to create a similar item subset and similar user subset increases geometrically, and the response time of the recommendation system is then increased. To solve these problems, this paper suggests a collaborative filtering technique that adapts a condition actively to the model and adopts the concepts of a context-based filtering technique. This technique consists of four major methodologies. First, items are made, the users are clustered according their feature vectors, and an inter-cluster preference between each item cluster and user cluster is then assumed. According to this method, the run-time for creating a similar item subset or user subset can be economized, the reliability of a recommendation system can be made higher than that using only the user preference information for creating a similar item subset or similar user subset, and the cold start problem can be partially solved. Second, recommendations are made using the prior composed item and user clusters and inter-cluster preference between each item cluster and user cluster. In this phase, a list of items is made for users by examining the item clusters in the order of the size of the inter-cluster preference of the user cluster, in which the user belongs, and selecting and ranking the items according to the predicted or recorded user preference information. Using this method, the creation of a recommendation model phase bears the highest load of the recommendation system, and it minimizes the load of the recommendation system in run-time. Therefore, the scalability problem and large scale recommendation system can be performed with collaborative filtering, which is highly reliable. Third, the missing user preference information is predicted using the item and user clusters. Using this method, the problem caused by the low density of the user preference matrix can be mitigated. Existing studies on this used an item-based prediction or user-based prediction. In this paper, Hao Ji's idea, which uses both an item-based prediction and user-based prediction, was improved. The reliability of the recommendation service can be improved by combining the predictive values of both techniques by applying the condition of the recommendation model. By predicting the user preference based on the item or user clusters, the time required to predict the user preference can be reduced, and missing user preference in run-time can be predicted. Fourth, the item and user feature vector can be made to learn the following input of the user feedback. This phase applied normalized user feedback to the item and user feature vector. This method can mitigate the problems caused by the use of the concepts of context-based filtering, such as the item and user feature vector based on the user profile and item properties. The problems with using the item and user feature vector are due to the limitation of quantifying the qualitative features of the items and users. Therefore, the elements of the user and item feature vectors are made to match one to one, and if user feedback to a particular item is obtained, it will be applied to the feature vector using the opposite one. Verification of this method was accomplished by comparing the performance with existing hybrid filtering techniques. Two methods were used for verification: MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and response time. Using MAE, this technique was confirmed to improve the reliability of the recommendation system. Using the response time, this technique was found to be suitable for a large scaled recommendation system. This paper suggested an Adaptive Clustering-based Collaborative Filtering Technique with high reliability and low time complexity, but it had some limitations. This technique focused on reducing the time complexity. Hence, an improvement in reliability was not expected. The next topic will be to improve this technique by rule-based filtering.

  • A potent intracellular-lipid-producing yeast, Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis SW-17, was screened out from a variety of arable soils, compost heaps, and fodders, and two strains of excellent extracellular-lipid-producing yeasts, Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis SW-5 and Rhodotorula graminis SW-54, were screened out from the surface of many species of leaves. And then the intra- and extra-cellular lipid productions by those Rhodotorula yeasts were studied. The results were as follows: 1. During the shaking culture of 8 days at $24^{\circ}C$, both the intra- and extra-cellular lipid accumulation started almost at the stationary phase of growth, when the nitrogen source in the medium was a little more than half used up. The intracellular lipid production by Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis SW-17 reached 58.42% (w/w) of dried yeast, and the extracellular lipid production by Rhodotorula graminis SW-54 amounted to 2.62g per liter of the medium. 2. After the carbon and nitrogen sources in the medium were almost consumed, if the yeasts were shake-cultured further in a state of starvation, the yeast cells re-utilized the already produced intra- and extra-cellular lipids and the lipids completely disappeared in the medium in about 90 days. 3. The relative concentration of carbon and nitrogen sources in the media greatly influenced both the intra- and extra-cellular lipid production. When the nitrogen source in the medium was almost used up for the growth of yeast, and excess carbon sources were still available, the lipid production vigorously proceeded. As long as the nitrogen source concentration in the medium was high, the lipid production was greatly suppressed. 4. The optimum pH for both the intra- and extra-cellular lipid production by those yeasts was pH 5.0-6.0. 5. The fatty acid components of the intracellular lipid of Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis SW-17 were myristic, palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids. The largest components of the fatty acids were palmitic acid equivalent to 30-45% of the whole fatty acids and oleic acid equivalent to 35-50%. 6. The fatty acid components of the extracellular lipid of Rhodotorula glutinis var. glutinis SW-5 and Rhodotorula graminis SW-54 were myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, 3-D-hydroxypalmitic, and 3-D-hydroxystearic acids. The largest components of the fatty acids were 3-D-hydroxypalmitic acid equivalent to 22-25% of the acids and 3-D-hydroxystearic acid equivalent to 13-17%. 7. The polyol component of the intracellular lipids was only glycerol, whereas the polyols of extracellular lipids were glycerol, mannitol, xylitol and arabitol.
