In this study the flow characteristics of developing turbulent pulsating flows in a square-sec-tional 180。 curved duct are investigated experimentally. The experimental study of air flow in a square-sectional curved duct is carried out to measure axial velocity distribution secondary flow velocity profiles and wall shear stress distributions by using a Laser Doppler Velocimetry system with the data acquisition and processing system of Rotating Machinery Resolver (RMR) and PHASE software at the entrance region of the duct which is divided into 7 sections from the inlet(${{\o}}=0_{\circ}$) to the outlet (${{\o}}=180_{\circ}$) in $30_{\circ}$ intervals. The results obtained from the study are summarized as follows: (1) The time-averaged critical Dean number of turbulent pulsating flow(De ta, cr) is greater than $75{\omega}+$ It is understood that the critical Dean number and the critical Reynolds number are related to the dimensionless angular frequency in a curved duct. (2) Axial velocity profiles of turbulent pulsating flows are of an annular type similar to those of turbulent stead flows. (3) Secondary flows of trubulent pulsating flows are strong and complex at the entrance region. As velocity amplitudes(A1) become larger secondary flows become stronger. (4) Wall shear stress distributions of turbulent pulsating flows in a square-sectional $180_{\circ}$ curved duct are exposed variously in the outer wall and are stabilized in the inner wall without regard to the phase angle.
In the present study the characteristics of turbulent oscillatory flows in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$curved duct were investigated experimentally. A series of experiments for air flow were conducted to measure axial velocity profiles, secondary flow velocity profiles and pressure distributions. The measurements were made by a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) system with a data acquisition and processing system which includes Rotating Machinery Resolve (RMR) and PHASE software. The results from the experiment are summarized as follows. (1) The maximum velocity moved toward the outer wall from the region of a bend angle of $30^{\circ}$. The velocity distribution had a positive value extended over the total phase in the region of a bend angle of $150^{\circ}$. (2) Secondary flows were generally proportional to the velocity of the main flow. The intensity of the secondary flow was about 25% as much as that in the axial direction. (3) Pressure distributions were effects of the oscillatory Dean number and respective region.
Two turbulent jet with different sinusoidal nozzle exit configurations of in-phase and $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase were investigated experimentally using a smoke-wire method and a hot-wire anemometry. Mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured at several downstream locations under $Re_D\;=\;5000$. For the case of in-phase nozzle configuration, the length of potential core exhibits negligible difference with respect to the transverse locations (0, $\lambda/4$ and $\lambda/2$), similar to that of a plane jet. On the other hand, a maximum difference of 30% in the potential-core length occurs for the $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase configuration. The spatial distributions of turbulence intensities also show significant difference for the nozzle of $180^{\circ}$ out-of-phase, whereas non-symmetric distribution is observed in the near-exit region(x/D = 1) for the in-phase sinusoidal nozzle jet. Compared to a slit planc jet, the sinusoidal nozzle jets seem to suppress the velocity deficit as the flow goes downstream. The sinusoidal nozzle jet was found to decrease turbulent intensity dramatically. The flow visualization results show that the flow characteristics of the sinusoidal nozzle jet are quite different from those of the slit plane jet.
The phenomena of two-phase suspension flows appear widely in nature and industrial processes. Hence, it is of great importance to understand the mechanism of the gas-solid two-phase flows. In the present study, the numerical simulation has been approached by utilizing the Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology for describing the characteristics of the fluid and particulate phases in a vertical pipe and a 90°square-sectioned bend. The continuous phase(gas phase) is described by the Eulerian formulation and a κ-ε turbulence model is employed to find mean and turbulent properties of the gas phase. The particle properties(velocity and trajectory) are then described by a Lagrangian approach and computed using the mean velocity and turbulent fluctuating velocity of the gas phase. The predictions are compared with measurements by laser-Doppler velocimeter for the validation. As a result, the calculated results show good agreements.
The CUPID code is a transient, three-dimensional, two-fluid, thermal-hydraulic code designed for a component-scale analysis of nuclear reactor components. The primary objective of this study is to assess the applicability of CUPID to single-phase turbulent flow analyses of $2{\times}2$ rod bundle subchannel. The bulk velocity at the inlet varies from 1.0 m/s up to 2.0 m/s which is equivalent to the fully turbulent flow with the range of Re=12,500 to 25,000. Adiabatic single-phase flow is assumed. The velocity profile at the exit region is quantitatively compared with both experimental measurement and commercial CFD tool. Three different boundary conditions are simulated and quantitatively compared each other. The calculation results of CUPID code shows a good agreement with the experimental data. It is concluded that the CUPID code has capability to reproduce the turbulent flow behavior for the $2{\times}2$ rod bundle geometry.
The interfacial area transport equation dynamically models the changes in interfacial structures along the flow field by mechanistically modeling the creation and destruction of dispersed phase. Hence, when employed in the numerical thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes, it eliminates artificial bifurcations stemming from the use of the static flow regime transition criteria. Accounting for the substantial differences in the transport mechanism for various sizes of bubbles, the transport equation is formulated for two characteristic groups of bubbles. The group 1 equation describes the transport of small-dispersed bubbles, whereas the group 2 equation describes the transport of large cap, slug or chum-turbulent bubbles. To evaluate the feasibility and reliability of interfacial area transport equation available at present, it is benchmarked by an extensive database established in various two-phase flow configurations spanning from bubbly to chum-turbulent flow regimes. The geometrical effect in interfacial area transport is examined by the data acquired in vertical fir-water two-phase flow through round pipes of various sizes and a confined flow duct, and by those acquired In vertical co-current downward air-water two-phase flow through round pipes of two different sizes.
In this study, experimental and numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the performance of centrifugal pump with various air admitting conditions. Experiments on pump performance under air-water two-phase flow n accomplished using a centrifugal pump with semi-open type impeller having three, five and seven blades, respectively. Also, the numerical analysis of turbulent air-water two-phase flow using finite volume method has been carried out to obtain the pressure, velocities and void fraction on the basis of a so-called bubbly flow model with the constant size and shape of cavity. The results obtained through this study show the reasonable agreements within the range of bubbly flow regime. There are promising developments concerning application of the present study for the flow in a centrifugal pump with two-phase flow conditions and efforts must be followed to improve the turbulence model and two-phase flow model for turbomachinery.

Due to the difficulty raised from the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow, numerical simulation for two phase flow remains one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around 2D hydrofoil by combing the cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. Also, the comparison of the calculation results is made with LES results to evaluate the capability of $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations even though this code can not grasp the small scaled bubbles in the calculation wheres LES can hold the real physics. This code will be extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics in the inducers and impellers.
