Aggregate Container Transportation Planning in the Presence of Dynamic Demand and Three Types of Vehicles (동적 수요와 세 가지 차량형태를 고려한 총괄 컨테이너 운송계획)

  • At the present time, container transportation plays a key role in the international logistics and the efforts to increase the productivity of container logistics become essential for Korean trucking companies to survive in the domestic as well as global competition. This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for container road transportation with dynamic demand. Usually the vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company-owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrust the company with its operation, and rented vehicle (outsourcing). Annually the trucking companies should decide how many company-owned and mandated trucks will be operated considering vehicle types and the transportation demands. With the forecasted monthly data for the volume of containers to be transported a year, a heuristic algorithm using tabu search is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost. The idea of the algorithm is based on both the aggregate production planning (APP) and the pickup-and-delivery problem (PDP). Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company determines the fleet size for transporting containers.

  • To revitalize the trucking market, many studies are being done but it still has a lot of problems such as imbalance between supply and demand, poor profit structure of truck owners, ect. Therefore, it aims to study what kinds of prerequisite are needed to solve these problems through analyzing system structure and mechanism of the market. To achieve it, System Dynamics methodology, appropriate to make a simulation model and analyze dynamics of the system, is utilized. To obtain an empirical research point of view, time series data related on trucking market-provided by The Korea Transport Institute-are used. In addition, interview with a local representative logistics company and a ICD(Inland Container Depot) operation company is performed to find out technical and functional supporting factors to solve the existing problems in the market.

  • This study suggests an approach for determining fleet size for LTL (less -than-truckload) transportation with dynamic demand for on-time supply of the parts between the assembly line in an automobile company and its part suppliers in Korea. The vehicles operated by the transportation trucking companies in Korea in general can be classified into three types depending on the ways how their expenses occur; company -owned truck, mandated truck which is owned by outsider who entrusts the company with its operation, and rented truck (outsourcing) . With the forecasted monthly production data a year, a heuristic algorithm is developed to determine the number of company-owned trucks, mandated trucks, and rented trucks in order to minimize the expected annual operating cost, which is based on the solution technologies used in the aggregate production planning and vehicle routing problem. Finally the algorithm is tested for the problem how the trucking company transports parts for the automobile company.

  • Logistic system and methods of the transportation have been changed rapidly by the variety of the logistics environment. It is necessary to analyze the efficiency of Korean trucking companies for enhancing the competitive power and operating. This paper will describe the analysis of the efficiency of the trucking companies with DEA models. By the CCR and the BCC models, which are in parts of DEA model, the efficiency and RTS(Return To Scale) of forty two selected trucking companies were studied. It was also analyzed how the study the input-output variables were effected. And then, some of the forty two trucking companies were shown as the benchmark. As the result of analysis on the two models, seven companies won the score '1' on CCR model and seventeen companies on BCC model. Moreover, this study showed that reducing the total asset out of input variables, and raising the sales profit out of the output variables played a main role to increase the efficiency of the trucking companies highly.

A Freight Company Management Model based on Perception Difference between Freight Company and Consigned Vehicle Owners (화물자동차 회사와 위수탁차주의 인식차이에 기반한 화물자동차 운송회사 경영모델)

  • This paper identified the difference in perception of the consignment system between the freight company and the consigned vehicle owners, derived factors that urgently need to improve the difference in perception, and presented the basis for establishing a management model based on this. A management model based on the difference in perception of consigned borrowers was established, and research hypotheses were established to conduct reliability, validity, and confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis, and mediation effect verification. As a result of the analysis, out of 58 questions, 56 of the total 65 questions showed a difference in perception of the consignment system between trucking companies and consigned vehicle owners, and the questions were input as management model factors. As a result of conducting confirmatory factor analysis, path analysis, and mediating effect verification using only recognition data, 5 hypotheses were adopted, and it was analyzed that the factor had no mediating effect. It can be analyzed that the appropriateness of the compensation system affects the improvement of each other's relationship, and the improvement of each other's relationship leads to the improvement of transportation services. However, since the mediating effect was rejected because it was not significant, this effect should not be exaggerated.

Analysis on Costs Structure and Economic Limitation at Domestic Short Sea Shipping of Container (컨테이너 연안운송의 비용구조와 경제적 제약 분석)

  • This study looks at the reasons behind the termination of container transportation between Busan and Incheon in terms of costs structure, the division of profit, and the economic limitation faced in the domestic shipping market. The operation costs have been examined in relation to the components of logistic system of container shipping and the cost function has been estimated. The distribution proportion of operation revenue has been also investigated, considering the different components of logistics activities. In addition, the average revenue of container vessels of 144TEU and 215TEU has been calculated. Economic limitation can be analysed through the optimisation behaviour of shipping companies which tries to maximize profit or minimize loss. In conclusion, domestic short sea shipping can get the economy of scale only by transporting vessels' maximum capacity. It is also vulnerable to trucking market's fluctuation. Without the subsidy for operation, the liner in domestic short sea shipping will stop the service in order to minimize the loss.

  • This paper aims to confirm the necessity of the consignment system in Korea's trucking market for the purpose of analyzing the difference in perception between the transportation company and the consignment owner to provide a basis for continuous development of the cargo transportation business. A survey was conducted on the current status of the domestic transportation market with transportation companies and consignment owners, and the perceptions between the two were compared and analyzed. Overall, satisfaction with the consignment system was in the order of transportation companies handling supplies, transportation companies that did not pay supplies, consignment owners belonging to supply companies, and consignment orders belonging to non-volume companies. Similar results were obtained in individual questions. In order for transport companies and consignment owners to coexist and develop in the freight car transport market, it will be necessary to prepare a strategy to increase the satisfaction of consignment owners belonging to transport companies that do not handle relatively low-satisfaction.
