In this study, to observe aging effect of undrained shear behavior for Nak-Dong River sand, undrained static and cyclic triaxial tests were performed with changing relative density ($D_r$), consolidation stress ratio($K_c$) and consolidation time. As a result of the test, the modulus of elasticity to all samples estimated within elastic zone by the micro strain of about 0.05% in case of static shear behavior increased with the lapse of consolidation time significantly, so aging effect was shown largely. Also strength of phase transformation point(S_{PT}$) and strength of critical stress ratio point($S_{CSR}$) increased with the lapse of consolidation time. Undrained cyclic shear strength($R_f$) obtained from the failure strain 5% increased in proportion to relative density($D_r$) and initial static shear stress($q_{st}$), $R_f$ of consolidated sample for 1,000 minutes increased about 10.6% compared to that for 10 minutes at the loose sand, and $R_f$ increased about 7.0% at the medium sand. In situ application range of $R_f$ to the magnitude of earthquake for Nak-Dong River sand was proposed by using a increasing rate of $R_f$ as being aging effect shown from this test result.
In this paper, the method of parameter estimation of a mathematical constitutive model blown as the smooth elasto-plastic cap model is studied. To predict the response of the real soil using this model, the eight parameters describing the constitutive equations have to be determined. First, experimental data are obtained from simple laboratory experiments such as one dimensional confined compression test in a consolidometer and drained triaxial compression test with the Ottawa sand f3r the reference value. Then, the numerical experiments are performed in the cap model with initial guessed parameters. The optimization method is utilized to fit the model response to experimental data by minimizing the error between the laboratory and numerical responses. Special attention is given to the parameter estimation procedure of numerical triaxial test due to the difficulty of the lateral strain measurements.

The poisson's ratio was obtained from the effective vertical stress and horizontal stress of consolidation-undrained test. It was analyzed void ratio verse poisson's ratio. At the result, the effective friction angle was increase with relative density increased, was decreased the poisson's ratio. The empirical equation of void ratio and poisson's ratio was showed very high correlation r2=0.846. The empirical equation was showed that the smaller the void ratio in the fine grained soil than granular soil. In the case of 0.85 times the correlation analysis equation of granular and fine grained soil, the experimental results were shown very similarly. In especially, the poisson's ratio prediction results was shown within 5% of the error range, was revalidation 0.85 times the correlation analysis equation using the void ratio. In this study, correlation analysis equation of the granular and fine grained soil was more reliability of the poisson's ratio prediction results apply to the void ratio than dry unit weight.
The shear strength characteristics of an unsaturated earth material are highly important not only for evaluating the seepage characteristics but also the stability of levee for a lifelong. In this study, unsaturated strength characteristics of Nak-dong river sand and clay that frequently used for the levee construction in southern province of Korea were analyzed using unsaturated triaxial compressive test. The strength characteristics due to the variation of matric suction were analyzed using multi-stage compression technique and the results were directly compared with the non-linear formulation for the apparent cohesion ($C_{max}$), and the friction component ${\varphi}^b$ were determined and evaluated from the test for the application of linear Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria. Cohesion and friction characteristics of the unsaturated levee material under various suction phases were also explored during this study.
Because the hydraulic/mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soil is more complicated than that of saturated soil, one of the most important issues in modelling unsaturated soil is to properly couple its stress-strain relationship with its water retention characteristics. Based on the results of a series of tests, the stress-strain relationship and the changes in suction and saturation of unsaturated completely decomposed granite (CDG, also called Masado) vary substantially under different loading/hydraulic conditions. To precisely model the hydraulic/mechanical behaviour of unsaturated Masado, in this study, the superloading concept was firstly introduced into an existing saturated/unsaturated constitutive model to consider the structural influences. Then a water retention curve (WRC) model considering the volumetric change in the soil, in which the skeleton and scanning curves of the water retention characteristics were assumed to shift in parallel in accordance with the change in the void ratio, was proposed. The proposed WRC model was incorporated into the constitutive model, and the validity of the newly proposed model was verified using the results of tests conducted on unsaturated Masado, including water retention, oedometer and triaxial tests. The accuracy of the proposed model in describing the stress-strain relationship and the variations in suction and saturation of unsaturated Masado is satisfactory.
It is important to estimate the shear strength of shallow compacted soils as a construction material. A series of constant water content triaxial compression (CWCC) tests under low confining state in this study were performed on compacted geomaterials. For establishing a relationship of the shear strengths between saturated and unsaturated states on compacted geomaterials, the suction stresses were derived by two methods: the conventional suction-measured method and the Suction stress-SWRC Method (SSM). Considering the suction stress as an equivalent confining stress component in the (${\sigma}_{net}$, ${\tau}$) plane, it was found that the peak deviator stress states agree well with the failure line of the saturated state from the triaxial compression test when the SSM is applied to obtain the suction stress. On the other hand, the cavitation phenomenon on the measurement of suction affected the results of the conventional suction-measured method. These results mean that the SSM is distinctly favorable for obtaining the suction value in the CWCC test because the SSM is not restricted by the cavitation phenomenon. It is expected that the application of the SSM would reduce the time required, and the projected cost with the additional equipment such as a pore water measuring device in the CWCC test.
Liquefaction refers to a phenomenon in which excessive pore water pressure occurs when a dynamic load such as an earthquake rapidly acts on a loose sandy soil saturated with soil, and the ground loses effective stress and becomes liquefied. The indoor repeated test for liquefaction evaluation can be confirmed through the repeated triaxial compression test and the repeated shear test. In this regard, this study tried to confirm the liquefaction resistance strength according to the relative density and particle size distribution of sand using the repeated triaxial compression test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength increased as the relative density increased regardless of the soil classification, and the liquefaction resistance strength according to the particle size distribution of the sand was confirmed that the liquefaction resistance strength of the SP sample close to SW was significantly higher. In addition, as a result of analyzing 30% of fine powder compared to 0% of fine powder, as the relative density increased to 40~70%, the liquefaction resistance strength decreased by 5~20%, and the domestic weathered soil ground had a fine liquefaction resistance strength compared to Jumunjin standard sand. When the minute was 10%, it was measured to be 30% or more, and when the fine particle was 30%, it was measured to be less than 50%.
This paper is an experimental work of estimating friction angle of very coarse grained soil such as rubble mound by performing laboratory experiments. Two crushed rocks of rubble mound were used for tests. Triaxial compression tests with drained conditions were performed to measure friction angles of soils prepared by mixing the crushed soil having an identical coefficient of uniformity with different maximum grain size distribution. Centrifuge model experiments with those soils were also performed to measure angle of repose and to estimate friction angle of soil from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state. Model tests were carried out by changing the G-levels of 1G and 50G. From triaxial compression tests, the measured value of friction angle of soil is in the range of $41{\sim}57^{\circ}$. The measured value of repose angle is in the range of $32{\sim}35^{\circ}$. The values of friction angle are found not so sensitive to the maximum grain size of soil as long as the coefficient of uniformity is identical. Estimated value of friction angle from measuring the slope of slip line in the active stress state is in the range of $30{\sim}46^{\circ}$. Thus, the estimated angle of friction are found to be greater in the order of the measured angle of repose, the estimated value from the slope of active state, and triaxial compression test results. On the other hand, the measured values of friction angle from triaxial tests were compared with empirical equations, based on the relation between friction angle and void ratio. Equations proposed by Helenelund(l966) and Hansen(1967) found to be relatively reliable to estimate friction angles of soil.
This paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of light-weighted soils (LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged clays and cement by using both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. The mechanical characteristics of the compressive strength of LWS are analysed with varying initial water contents of dredged clays, EPS ratio, cement ratio, and curing stress. In the triaxial compression state, it is found that the compressive strength of LWS containing EPS is independent on the effective confined stress. As the EPS ratio decreases($A_E$<2%) and cement ratio increases($A_c$>2%), the behavior characteristics of triaxial compressive strength-strain relationship is similar to that of cemented soil which decreases rapidly in compressive strength after ultimate compressive strength. For the applications of LWS to ground improvements which require the compressive strength of up to 200kPa, the optimized EPS ratio and initial water content of dredged clay are estimated to be 3~4% and 165~175%, respectively. Also, the ultimate compressive strength under both triaxial test and uniaxial compression states are almost constant for a cement ratio of up to 2% and then critical cement ratio of this LWS shall be 2%.
A series of triaxial compression tests were performed on samples of compacted granite soil in a modified triaxial cell that allowed separate control of pore air pressure ($U_a$) and pore water pressure ($U_w$) in order to examine the characteristics of pore pressure, volume change and stress-strain behavior during undrained loading conditions. Triaxial samples of unsaturated and saturated compacted granite soil, 50mm in diameter and 100mm in height, were prepared by compaction in a mould. These samples were tested at 3 different suction values (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 kgf/cm$^2$) for unsaturated compacted granite soil and at 3 different confining stresses (1.0, 2.0, 4.0 kgf/cm$^2$). Results showed that only effective cohesion increased with little variation of friction angle, according to matric suction.
