The silicon-containing Diamond-like Carbon (Si-DLC) film as an low friction coefficient coating has especially treated a different silicon content by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process at $500^{\circ}C$ on nitrided-STD 11 mold steel with (TMS) gas flow rate. The effects of variable silicon content on the Si-DLC films were tested with relative humidity of 5, 30 and 85% using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The wear-tested and original surface of Si-DLC films were analysed for an understanding of physical and chemical characterization, including a changing structure, via Raman spectra and nano hardness test. The results of Raman spectra have inferred a changing intra-structure from dangling bonds. And high silicon containing DLC films have shown increasing carbon peak ratio ($I_D/I_G$) values and G-peak values. In particular, the tribological tested surface of Si-DLC was shown the increasing hardness value in proportional to TMS gas flow rate. Therefore, at same time, the structure of the Si-DLC film was changed to a different intra-structure and increased hardness film with mechanical shear force and chemical reaction.
The purpose of this study was to observe the effect on the removal of dentinal smear layer and morphological changes of reduced dentin surfaces by various dentin surface conditioners. Thirty-two healthy human premolars extracted due to periodontal or orthodontic reasons were used. The teeth were cross-sectioned to expose dentin at the middle portion of the crown with diamond rotary saw. The specimens were then divided into 8 groups. The sectioned dentin surfaces in group 1 to 4 were grinded with No. 400 grit silicone abrasive paper and those in group 5 to 8 were cut with #700 carbide bur under air-water spray. The grinded or cut dentin surfaces were conditioned with 3% $H_2O$, Dentin Conditioner(GC Inter. Corp., Japan), and Scotchprep(3M Dent Prod., U.S.A) according to manufacturer's directions. All the specimens were dried in room temperature for 48 hours, and gold-coated with Eiko ion coater(Eik-engineering Co.), and observed in Hitachi S-450 Scanning electron microscope at 15-25 KV. The following results were obtained; 1. The dentin surfaces grinded with the silicon abrasive paper were rougher in texture and heavier in amount of smear layer than those cut with the carbide bur. 2. Scrubbing of 3% $H_2O_2$ was not effective in removing dentinal smear layer. 3. 20-second conditioning of Dentin Conditioner (GC Inter. Corp) resulted in the removal of a significant amount of the smear layer without removing the tubular plugs and dissolving the peritubular dentin. 4. Scotchprep removed the smear layer very effectively. But at the same time it dissolved the peritubular dentin. 5. Irrespective of the uses of the silicon carbide abrasive paper or the carbide bur the morphological changes of dentin surfaces treated with the same conditioning agents were similar.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of and patient's satisfaction with treatment of gingival melanin hyperpigmentation with a Nd:YAG laser and a high speed rotary instrument. Methods: Three patients with melanin hyperpigmentation in the anterior parts of the gingiva were chosen for this case study. Clinical photographs were taken at the preoperative state and three patients were treated under local anesthesia. In the maxilla, the gingival deepithelization was conducted with a high speed diamond bur, whereas, in the mandible with a Nd:YAG laser. Clinical photographs were taken immediately after the procedures and at the 1st, 2nd, and 4th week to evaluate clinical color changes. A week after the procedure, the patients filled out a questionnaire about any pain or discomfort. At the 4th week after the procedure, the patients filled out questionnaires about esthetic aspects of the results of treatment. Results: In all cases, both anterior gingival areas were depigmented with satisfaction and the patients did not complain of severe pain or discomfort. At the 1st week of healing, the gingiva showed moderate to fast epithelization. Two weeks after the procedure, clinically, the gingiva showed almost complete healing. Four weeks after the procedure, there was significant improvement in gingival melanin hyperpigmentation. Conclusions: The Nd:YAG laser and the high speed rotary instruments seem to be effective for the esthetic treatment of gingival melanin hyperpigmentation.
The purpose of this study were to comfirm the effects of the thickness and kinds of porcelain, etchants, illumination time, elapsed time for the measurement, and chemical cure component to the bond strength of porcelain laminate and composite resin cement, and to compare the effects between the light cured resin and the dual cured resins. The etched porcelain surface, the sectioned surface crossing porcelain and resin after bonding, and the debonded surfaces were observed by the SEM. One product of laminate porcelain powder, one light cured resin and two dual cured resins were selected. Each resin cements are lightened through the thin porcelain disc which was cut from cylindrical porcelain specimen by the diamond saw, and by the light through the porcelain disc they were bonded. Changes of thickness and kinds of porcelain, etchants, illumination time, and the elapsed time for the measurement were considered as variables for the bond strength. And the bond strength of porcelain and dual cured resins under the conditions of autopolymerization or the removal of chemical cure component were measured and compared. Bond strength were measured by shear stress. The etched surface, the cross-sectioned surface, and the debonded surface of porcelain or resin were observed by SEM. On the summary of this study, the following conclusions can be stated; 1. Bond strength of light cured resin was decreased inversely by the thickened porcelain laminate and showed the lowest value to the masking dentin porcelain among 4 kinds of porcelain powder. 2. Bond strength of autopolymerization of dual cured resin without illumination in dark chamber were from 75% to 98% to the data of dual cured resin with illumination. 3. Bond strength of dual cured resin used without chemical cured components were same to them of light cured resin. 4. Cross-sectioned surface treated by silane did not show the gap between the porcelain and resin. 5. Illumination over 80 seconds did not make the significant increase of bond strength on all kinds of resin.
To investigate the renal effects of enrofloxacin administration on rats induced with dehydration or hyperoxaluria, male rats were treated with enrofloxacin of 50 mg to 500 mg/kg b.w.. The microscopical observations of kidney and urine sediment were carried out in the experimental groups. The result obtained were as follows; The male rats deprived of water for 72 hours and administered with enrofloxacin. As enrofloxacin administration dose was increased, clinical signs such as loss of appetite, depression, weakness, and loss of urine output became more severe. In the histopathological findings, there were hyperemia and hemorrhage in renal cortex, vacuolation and necrosis of renal tubular epithelia, proteinous casts within renal tubules. The male rats were orally administered with sodium oxalate and injected with enrofloxacin for 7days. As enrofloxacin administration dose was increased, clinical signs such as the loss of appetite and water consumption, and weakness became more severe. In the histopathological findings, there are hemorrhage of glomeruli and cortical hyperemia, vacuolation and necrosis of tubular epithelia, proteinous casts in renal tubules. In the microscopical findings of urine sediment, there are calcium oxalate crystal (diamond-like type) and magnesium ammonium phosphate crystals (rhomboid). The male rats were intraperitoneally injected with sodium oxalate and administered with enrofloxacin for 7days. As enrofloxacin administration dose was increased, clinical signs such as the loss of appetite and water consumption, weakness were more severe. In the histopathological findings, there were hyperemia and hemorrhage in both glomeruli and renal cortex. Severe necrosis of renal tubular epithelia, bluish materials within renal tubules were also found. In the microscopical findings of urine sediment, there were many calcium oxalate crystals. The present results suggest that enrofloxacin has some injurious effects in rats having dehydration or hyperoxaluria, and clinically, we should consider these renal injury effects when we use enrofloxacin in patients accompanied renal disease, dehydration and hyperoxaluria conditions.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the polishing effect on roughness and color change of pressed and layering ceramics after immersion in coffee solution. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 88 ceramic discs ($1.0mm{\times}10.0mm$) were manufactured - 44 nano-fluorapatite layering ceramics (IPS e.max Ceram. Group C) and 44 pressed lithium disilicate ceramic discs (IPS e. max Press - Group P). Each group was divided into 4 subgroups according to surface treatments: (G) Glaze, (S) Shofu polishing system (Shofu Inc.), (E) Edenta AG polishing System, (KG) $30-{\mu}m$ diamond granulation tip. Surface roughness (Ra) and color change (${\Delta}E$) measurings after the surface treatments were performed, before and 12 days after the immersion in coffee solution. A samples' qualitative analysis was conducted with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically-treated with one-way-ANOVA and Duncan's tests, apart from paired t-test and Pearson's correlation test (${\alpha}=5%$). RESULTS. The decrescent order, both for surface roughness (Ra) and ${\Delta}E$ for both ceramics were: KG > E > S > G (P<.05). With exception for PG and CG subgroups, which did not present statistical difference between them, all other pressed ceramics subgroups presented smaller Ra values and greater ${\Delta}E$ values than the layering ceramics subgroups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Although mechanical polishing systems presented intermediate Ra values, their colors were considered clinically acceptable. There is a strong correlation between the surface roughness and the color change of tested ceramics.
The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of dentin surface conditioners on the dentin surfaces. Freshly extracted human molars were used in this study. They were stored at $4^{\circ}C$ saline solution before experiment. The crown portions of the teeth were cut in various directions by means of wet diamond point to expose dentin which include transverse, vertical oblique, horizontal and oblique cut to the long axis (Fig. 1). Each tooth was then mounted with self curing acrylic resin in brass ring to expose the flattened dentin surfaces. Final finish was accomplished by grinding the dentin specimens with wet No. 180 and No. 600 grit silicon carbide abrasive paper until a 6.0mm in diameter on a dentin surface was exposed without pulp exposure. The specimens were divided into 9 groups according to the modes of dentin treatment procedure. The following surface treatments were applied on these preparation surfaces; Group 1: unetched (control group) after finish with No. 600 silicon carbide abrasive paper. Group 2: etched with 30% phosphoric acid for 60s Group 3: etched with 10-3 solution for 60s Group 4: Cleaned with 5% NaOCl for 30s Group 5: applied Dentin Adhesit Group 6: cleaned with 5% NaOCl followed by applying the Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ Group 7: applied Photo Bond on the unetched dentin followed by applying the Photo Clearfil Bright Group 8: Etched with 30% phosphoric acid followed by applying Photo Bond and Photo Clearfil Bright Group 9: etched with 10-3 solution followed by applying Photo Bond and Photo Clearfil Bright All the specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ under 50% relative humidity for 24 hours before observations. The specimens in 7, 8, and 9 group, omitting the group 1 to 6, were demineralized in 10% HCl for 10s in order to observe the resin tags. All the specimens in each group were then dried at room temperature. The dried specimens were ion coated with Eiko ion coater (Eiko-engineering Co.), and observed in Hitachi S-430 Scanning electron microscope (Hitachi, Co. Tokyo) at 15KV. The following results were obtained as follows; 1. The smear layers were still remained in group 1,2,4,5, and 6. 2. There is no effect of 5% NaOCl and 30% phosphoric acid on the changes of dentin morphology 3. The dentin treated with 10-3 solution, indicating the tubules opened when the smear layer and the dental plug dissolved. 4. In case of applying the bonding agents the resin tag was not formed at the deep area of dentinal tubules, but in case of applying the Dentin Adhesit$^{(R)}$ that was not.
This study evaluated the influence of a desensitizer(MS coat) on microtensile bond strength of different adhesives:a three-step adhesive(All-Bond 2), a two-step adhesive(Single Bond), a one-step adhesive(One-up Bond F). Non-caries extracted human molars were used. Dentin surface was obtained by horizontal section on mid-portion of crown using a water-cooled low speed diamond saw. Teeth were randomly divided into 6 group. AMO(MS coat + All Bond), SMO(MS coat + Single Bond)- and OMO(MS coat + One-up Bond F)-dentin surface were treated with 17% EDTA before bonded adhesive. AMX-, SMX- and OMX-dentin surface were bonded with All-Bond 2, Single Bond and One-up Bond F, respectively. with no previous treatment with MS coat and 17% EDTA. About 1cm high resin composite($Z-250^{TM}$) were incrementally build-up on the treated surface. The specimens for the microtensile test were serially sectioned perpendicular to the adhesive layer to obtain $0.7{\times}0.7mm$ sticks. 30 sticks were prepared from each group. After that. tensile bond strength for each stick was measured with Microtensile Tester at a 1mm/min crosshead speed. Fractured dentin surfaces were observed under the SEM. The results were statistically analysed by using a One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test(p<0.05). Value in MPa were: $AMO-44.35{\pm}13.21;{\;}SMO-39.35{\pm}13.32;{\;}OMO-31.07{\pm}10.25;{\;}AMX-49.22{\pm}16.38;{\;}SMX-56.02{\pm}13.35;{\;}OMX-72.93{\pm}16.19$. Application of MS coat reduced microtensile bond strengths of both Single Bond and One-up Bond F, whereas microtensile bond strengths of All-Bond 2 were not affected significantly.

For various applications of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the uniform alignment of liquid crystal (LC) molecules on treated surfaces is significantly important. Generally, a rubbing method has been widely used to align the LC molecules on polyimide (PI) surfaces. Rubbed PI surfaces have suitable characteristics, such as uniform alignment. However, the rubbing method has some drawbacks, such as the generation of electrostatic charges and the creation of contaminating particles. Thus, we strongly recommend a non contact alignment technique for future generations of large high-resolution LCDs. Most recently, the LC aligning capabilities achieved by ultraviolet and ion-beam exposures which are non contact methods, on diamond-like carbon (DLC) inorganic thin film layers have been successfully studied because DLC thin films have a high mechanical hardness, a high electrical resistivity, optical transparency, and chemical inertness. In addition, nitrogen-doped DLC (NDLC) thin films exhibit properties similar to those of the DLC thin films and a higher thermal stability than the DLC thin films because C:N bonding in the NDLC thin filmsis stronger against thermal stress than C:H bonding in the DLC thin films. Our research group has already studied the NDLC thin films by an ion-beam alignment method. The $SiN_x$ thin films deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition are widely used as an insulation layer for a thin film transistor, which has characteristics similar to those of DLC inorganic thin films. Therefore, in this paper, we report on LC alignment effects and pretilt angle generation on a $SiN_x$, thin film treated by ion-beam irradiation for various N ratios

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin when etched with laser instead of phosphoric acid. Material and methods: Recently extracted forty molars, completely free of dental caries, were embedded into acrylic resin. After exposing dentin with diamond saw, teeth surface were polished with a series of SiC paper. The teeth were divided into four groups composed of 10 specimens each; 1) no surface treated group as a control 2) acid-etched with 35%-phosphoric acid 3) Er:YAG laser treated 4) Er,Cr:YSGG laser treated. A dentin bonding agent (Adapter Single Bond2, 3M/ESPE) was applied to the specimens and then transparent plastic tubes (3 mm of height and diameter) were placed on each dentin. The composite resin was inserted into the tubes and cured. All the specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the shear bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine (Z020, Zwick, Germany). The data of tensile bond strength were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Duncan's test at ${\alpha}$= 0.05. Results: The bond strengths of Er:YAG laser-treated group was $3.98{\pm}0.88$ MPa and Er,Cr:YSGG laser-treated group showed $3.70{\pm}1.55$ MPa. There were no significant differences between two laser groups. The control group showed the lowest bond strength, $1.52{\pm}0.42$ MPa and the highest shear bond strength was presented in acid-etched group, $7.10{\pm}1.86$ MPa (P < .05). Conclusion: Laser-etched group exhibited significantly higer bond strength than that of control group, while still weaker than that of the phosphoric acid-etched group.
