  • Reinforced concrete beams show increased ductile behavior when the compressive concrete is confined with transverse steel. In the inelastic range, the most variations of ductile behaviour are defined the equivalent length of the plastic hinge and the plastic hinge rotation. In an investigation to study the influence of such confinement, sixteen reinforced concrete beams were tested in flexure and the deflections noted at all stages of loading. For all the beams tested, the plastic hinge rotation have been computed and the effect of confinement on the same examined. The conclusions are summarized as follows: The equivalent lengths of the plastic hinge are ranged within the effective depth comparatively. The ability of the plastic hinge rotation of the reinforced concrete beams confined with transverse steel are enlarged when transverse reinforcement content are increased, but the spaces are more important as the shear force are largely increased.

  • This study reported, the effect of random variation in system properties on bending response of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced composite (SWCNTRC) plates subjected to transverse uniform loading is examined. System parameters such as the SWCNT armchair, material properties, plate thickness and volume fraction of SWCNT are modelled as basic random variables. The basic formulation is based on higher order shear deformation theory to model the system behaviour of the SWCNTRC composite plate. A C0 finite element method in conjunction with the first order perturbation technique procedure developed earlier by the authors for the plate subjected to lateral loading is employed to obtain the mean and variance of the transverse deflection of the plate. The performance of the stochastic SWCNTRC composite model is demonstrated through a comparison of mean transverse central deflection with those results available in the literature and standard deviation of the deflection with an independent First Order perturbation Technique (FOPT), Second Order perturbation Technique (SOPT) and Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Influences of transverse compressive stress on the critical current ( $I_{c}$) in AgMg and AgMn alloy sheathed Bi-2223 tapes were investigated at 77 K and 0 T. The $I_{c}$ degradation behavior depending on sample specifications was discussed in viewpoints of n-value and damage morphology. As a result, Bi-2223 tapes showed a significant drop in $I_{c}$ for stresses greater than 50MPa. The AgMg sheathed Bi-2223 tapes representing higher $I_{c}$ showed a lower $\sigma$$_{irr}$ and a significant $I_{c}$ degradation with increase in compressive stress. There existed a voltage tap separation dependency of the $I_{c}$ degradation behavior caused by the transverse compressive stress.sive stress.s.

  • Although the transverse butt weld method with ceramic backing strip has been widely used in various industrial fields for its fabricational convenience, it is rarely used in offshore industries since the fatigue strength of the weld joint has not been proved sufficiently. This study conducted fatigue tests for series of butt weld specimens with horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) welding positions in order to verify the fatigue strength compared to S-N curve by DNV (Det Norske Veritas), IIW (International Institute of Welding) and Eurocode 3. The difference of the 2G specimens and the 3G specimens are investigated in terms of angular distortion and the effect on the fatigue strength are analyzed.

  • In a multicell box structure, distortional warping normal stress due to warping of cross section and transverse bending normal stress of walls due to distortion of cross section may consider as significant stresses unless distortion of box section is appropriately restricted. Nevertheless, during the past decades, no evaluation of distortional warping and transverse bending resistances for the multicell box section has been performed owing to geometric complexity and Insufficient information with respect to the distortion of multicell box section. The objective of present study is to evaluate the distortional warping and transverse bending resistances for the distortion of multicell box section and to validate the resistances through box girder analyses using multicell box beam element developed and conventional shell element. This developed box beam element has nine degrees of freedom per node including the effect of distortion.

  • The ductility of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns with one layer of longitudinal and spiral reinforcement placed near the outside face of the section and the steel tube placed on the inside face of the section is investigated. Such hollow sections are confined through the wall thickness since the steel tube is placed. The results of analytical moment-curvature analyses for such hollow sections are compared with those for the circular section with the sane diameter. In this study, moment-curvature analyses are conducted with Mandel's confined concrete stress-strain relationship in which the effect of confinement is to increase the compression strength and ultimate strain of concrete. The moment-curvature analyses confirmed that the ductility is primarily influenced on the ultimate strain. The variables influenced on the ultimate strain is the ratio and yield strength of confining reinforcement and the compression strength for confined concrete. From this ultimate strain - the transverse reinforcement ratio relationship, the transverse reinforcement ratio for circular hollow reinforced columns with confinement is proposed. The proposed transverse reinforcement ratio is confirmed by experimental results.

  • In this study, we propose a new equation that evaluates the shear strength of beam-column connections in reinforced concrete and steel beam (RCS) composite materials. This equation encompasses the effect of shear keys, extended face bearing plates (E-FBP), and transverse beams on connection shear strength, as well as the contribution of cover plates. Mobilization coefficients for beam-column connections in the RCS composite system are suggested. The proposed model, validated by statistical analysis, provided the strongest correlation with test results for connections containing both E-FBP and transverse beams. Additionally, our results indicated that Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and Modified AIJ (M-AIJ) equations should be used carefully to evaluate the shear strength for connections that do not have E-FBP or transverse beams.

  • Longitudimal and transverse normal zone propagations in the superconducting coil are analyzed and propagation velocity is derived from the heat balance equations in the propagating boundary region. The results of applying to the specific superconducting wire show that propagation velocity is linearly proportional to the transport current and increasing ramp current speeds up the longitudinal velocity by 1.22[m/s] under the applied field of 2T. Transient heat transfer has a significant effect on the normal zone propagation velocity and it decreases longitudinal velocity by 5.2[m/s] under the applied field of 2T as being compared to the steady-state heat transfer. Increasing ramp current speeds up the Z-axis transverse propagation velocity by 0.042[m/s] and transverse velocity of R and Z axis is costant regardless of the current flows.

  • Coupling beams serve as primary source of energy dissipation in coupled shear wall systems during large earthquakes. However, the overestimation of the shear strength of diagonally reinforced coupling beams may be adverse effect on the seismic performance of coupled shear wall systems. In order to force coupling beams to properly work during earthquakes, coupling beams should be designed with accurate shear strength equations. The objective of this study is to propose the accurate shear strength equation for slender diagonally reinforced coupling beams. For this purpose, experimental tests were conducted using three diagonally reinforced coupling specimens with different amount of transverse reinforcement under reversed cyclic loads to evaluate the hysteretic behavior of the specimens. The test results show that transverse reinforcement of slender diagonally reinforced coupling beam affects the maximum strength and drift ratio.

  • The elastic deflection of thin ice sheets due In bending and shear deformation is considered. The in-plane Young's modulus and the transverse shear modulus are calculated by least squres fit of transverse plate deflection data. Results show that thin ice plates behave predominantly in shear. Previously, the Young's moduli were calaulated based on bending theory alone. The Young's moduli of thin model ice sheets, estimated using the bending and shear theory, are more than an order of magnitude greater than calculated previously, and hence are more realistic. Further, the previous ambiguity in the Young's modulus, arising from fitting the data at various distances from the point of loading, is removed by considering shear and bending deformation.
