  • This paper describes an unequal Bagley divider using uniform transmission lines with adjustment electrical lengths between output ports. To obtain an arbitrary dividing ratio of Bagley divider, we have only adjusted the electrical lengths of the transmission line between output ports. All the transmission lines have the same characteristic impedance value. This design method does not require an impedance transformer for port matching. For verification, we simulated and fabricated a 3-way, 1:2:1 and 5-way, 2:3:4:3:2 ratio Bagley divider with an operating frequency of 2 GHz. The experimental results are in agreement with the simulated results.

  • We constructed a TEA $N_2$ laser which consists of spark gap, pulse type high voltage power supply, Blumlein transmission line circuit, laser tube with Ernst electrode. We observed the self-preionization with an optical fiber in the spark gap and laser tube. The higher voltage power supplied to the Blumlein transmission line circuit, the better preionization was. An U-type transformer yielded better stability and output power than an I-type transformer. The discharge time after triggering a spark gap for the U-type transformer was also short. We obtained the stability of $2.7\%$ and output power of $36{\mu}J$ when the optimum conditions of the laser operation were spark gap distance of 6.0 mm, electrode distance in laser tube of 5.0 mm, $N_2$ gas flow rate in spark gap of 1500 cc/min, $N_2$ gas flow rate in laser tube of 4 ${\iota}$/min, output window reflectivity of $40\%$ and repetition rate of 10 Hz.

  • A coaxial-cable impedance transformer used in wideband frequency range is generally restricted to the fixed impedance transformation ratio as n2:1 or 1:n2(n: the number of coaxial cables). In this paper, we propose a new coaxial-cable impedance transformer to have an arbitrary impedance transformation ratio. We have fabricated three impedance transformers($50-{\Omega}$ to $25-{\Omega}$, $50-{\Omega}$ to $20-{\Omega}$ and $50-{\Omega}$ to $9-{\Omega}$) to confirm the operation characteristic of the suggested impedance transformer. The reflection characteristics (S11) of the fabricated $50-{\Omega}$ to $25-{\Omega}$ and $50-{\Omega}$ to $20-{\Omega}$ impedance transformer were less than -15dB over about 3-octaves frequency range and the reflection characteristic (S11) of the fabricated $50-{\Omega}$ to $9-{\Omega}$ impedance transformer was less than -15dB over about 1-octave frequency range, respectively.

  • Recent progress in development of CMOS power amplifiers for mobile terminals is reviewed, focusing first on switching mode power amplifiers, which are used for transmitters with constant envelope modulation and polar transmitters. Then, various transmission line transformers are evaluated. Finally, linear power amplifiers, and linearization techniques, are discussed. Although CMOS devices are less linear than other devices, additional functions can be easily integrated with CMOS power amplifiersin the same IC. Therefore, CMOS power amplifiers are expected to have potential applications after various linearity and efficiency enhancement techniques are used.

  • This paper describes a phase-shifter which can flexibly adjust the active and reactive power flow through an ac transmission line. The phase-shifter has two voltage-source converters sharing an energy storage capacitor. The magnitude of the injected voltage is controlled by the converter I connected in parallel with the sending terminal, while that of phase angle by the converter II in series with the line through the coupling transformer. In order to analyze the whole system operation, an equivalent circuit model was developed and verified by a computer simulation with EMTP code.

  • A high output power voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) in the U-band was implemented using a 65 nm CMOS process. The proposed VCO used a transmission line to increase output voltage swing and overcome the limitations of CMOS technologies. Two varactor banks were used for fine tuning with a 5% frequency tuning range. The proposed VCO showed small variation in output voltage and operated at 51.55-54.18 GHz. The measured phase noises were -51.53 dBc/Hz, -91.84 dBc/Hz, and -101.07 dBc/Hz at offset frequencies of 10 kHz, 1 MHz, and 10 MHz, respectively, with stable output power. The chip area, including the output buffer, is $0.16{\times}0.16mm^2$ and the maximum output power was -0.11 dBm. The power consumption was 33.4 mW with a supply voltage of 1.2-V. The measured $FOM_P$ was -190.8 dBc/Hz.

  • This paper proposes a SSSC based on multi-bridge inverters. The dynamic characteristic of the proposed SSSC was analyzed by EMTP simulation and a scaled hardware model, assuming that the SSSC is inserted in the transmission line of the one-machine-infinite-bus power system. The proposed SSSC has 6 multi-bridge inverters per phase, which generates 13 pulses for each half period of power frequency. The proposed SSSC generates a quasi-sinusoidal output voltage by 90 degree phase shift to the line current. The proposed SSSC does not require the coupling transformer for voltage injection, and has a flexibility in operation voltage by increasing the number of series connection.

  • This paper describes a modeling of a FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) device, namely, SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator) model. The SSSC, a solid-state voltage source inverter coupled with a transformer, is connected in series with a transmission line. SSSC provides controllable compensating voltage, which is in quadrature with the line current, over an capacitive and an inductive range, independently of the magnitude of the line current. This SSSC model is obtained from the injection model for series connected VSC(Voltage Source Converter) by adding a constraint that the injected voltage should be in quadrature with the line current. The paper discusses the basic operating and performance characteristics of the SSSC, and power flow control in power system.

  • This paper presents a design of a 100 W high-efficiency power amplifier, whose operational frequency band expands from 30 to 512 MHz, using negative feedback network, push-pull structure, broadband RF choke, and transmission line transformer for balun configuration. The push-pull amplifier has been tuned for higher output power using a shunt capacitor as a matching component at its load especially for high-frequency region. The implemented power amplifier exhibited a very flat power gain of $18.34{\pm}0.9\;dB$ throughout the operating frequency band and very high power-added efficiency(PAE) of greater than 40% at an output power of 100 W. It also showed second- and third-harmonic distortion levels of below -34 dBc and -12 dBc, respectively, through the entire operating frequency band.

  • Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.
