  • Flexible couplers are widely used for exhaust transmitted vibration reduction in vehicles. This paper describes an investigation into the acoustical characteristics of exhaust flexible coupler by the simulation and testing. Computational acoustic simulation is carrying out to investigate resonance frequency and transmission loss of decoupler using the boundary element method and transfer matrix approach. To confirm the acoustical simulation results of exhaust decoupler, we compare with measured experimental results by the test of transmission loss measurement system. In the comparison with simulation results and tests results, there is correctly fit the resonance frequency and the trend of transmission loss. Also, we show that the acoustical structure of decoupler is analogous to the expended tube or side branch resonator. The characteristics of exhaust decoupler have a marked increase in the acoustic attenuation at the specified frequency bend. Therefore the decoupler is applied to develop the exhaust system not only for the vibration isolator but also for the noise attenuator.

  • The key to model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) algorithms for transmission computed tomography lies in the ability to accurately model the data formation process from the emitted photons produced in the transmission source to the measured photons at the detector. Therefore, accurately modeling the system matrix that accounts for the data formation process is a prerequisite for MBIR-based algorithms. In this work we compared quantitative performance of the three representative ray-driven methods for calculating the system matrix; the ray-tracing method (RTM), the distance-driven method (DDM), and the strip-area based method (SAM). We implemented the ordered-subsets separable surrogates (OS-SPS) algorithm using the three different models and performed simulation studies using a digital phantom. Our experimental results show that, in spite of the more advanced features in the SAM and DDM, the traditional RTM implemented in the OS-SPS algorithm with an edge-preserving regularizer out-performs the SAM and DDM in restoring complex edges in the underlying object. The performance of the RTM in smooth regions was also comparable to that of the SAM or DDM.

  • The transmission of vibration energy through beam-plate junctions in vibration intensity analysis called power new analysis (PFA) has been studied. PFA is an analytic tool for the prediction of frequency averaged vibration response of built-up structures at medium to high frequency ranges. The power transmission and reflection coefficients between the semi-infinite beam and plate are estimated using the wave transmission approach. For the application of the power coefficients to practical complex structures, the numerical methods, such as finite element method are needed to be adapted to the power flow governing equation. To solve the discontinuity of energy density at the joint, joint matrix is developed using energy flow coupling relationships at the beam-plate joint. Using the joint matrix developed in this paper, an idealized ship stem part is modeled with finite element program, and vibration energy density and intensity are calculated.

  • This paper explores a structuring method for solid modeling processes of an automobile automatic transmission-lever design. The aim of this work is to establish standard procedures to minimize iterations and trial and errors during the product development process to increase development time and costs. The design of the transmission-lever is periodically required to be changed with the model change of an automobile. The transmission-lever design process has mainly depended on the designer's experience. It causes to make difficulties to handle the dependency of components. The design process can be improved by resolving the dependency problem using the DSM. The process of applying the DSM provides a systematic way for the solid modeling of transmission-lever by the consideration of geometry dependency.

  • The precipitation behavior in Mg-6 wt%Zn-1 wt%Y alloy annealed at different temperatures of $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ has been characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscope. When the alloy is annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr, the plate- and the rod-shaped ${\beta}_2'$ phases are precipitated in the matrix. The orientation relationship of plate-shaped precipitates with the matrix exhibits a [$11{\bar{2}}0]{\beta}_2$ || [$10{\bar{1}}0$]Mg, $(0001){\beta}_2'$ || (0001)Mg. While the rod-shaped precipitates have two kinds of the orientation relationships with the matrix, i.e. $[11{\bar{2}}0]{\beta}_2'$||[0001] Mg, $(0001){\beta}_2'||(11{\bar{2}}0)$ Mg and $[11{\bar{2}}0]{\beta}_2'$||[0001] Mg, $({\bar{1}}106){\beta}_2'||(10{\bar{1}}0)$ Mg. With increasing annealing time at $200^{\circ}C$ the ${\beta}_1'$ phases are also precipitated in the matrix and the orientation relationship exhibits a $[010]{\beta}_1'$ || [0001]Mg, $(603){\beta}_1'$ || ($01{\bar{1}}0$)Mg between the ${\beta}_1'$ precipitate and the matrix. The icosahedral phases are precipitated in the alloy annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ and exhibit a $[I2]_I$ || [0001]Mg relationship with the matrix.

  • This paper represents a study on the conceptual design of new automatic bicycle transmission. The gear change in a commercial bicycle is carried out by moving the chain between sprockets. By the use of a multiple sprocket for speed change the power loss and transmission shock may occur. To solve the problem of bicycle transmission, the improved solution was derived by the technical contradiction matrix of TRIZ. The conceptual solution is one sprocket which replaces the function of multiple sprockets and adapts actively to the pitch of chain. And it was confirmed to be an adequate design through the Independence Axiom of design axiom.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling of transmission line undergoing galloping vibrations. To this end, the kinetic and potential energies of a uniform wire vibrating in space are derived. The equations of motion suitable for numerical simulations are derived using the assumed mode method and Lagrange equation. The resulting equations of motion are expressed in matrix form. To cope with bundled transmission line, the spacer was modelled by a spring element. As a numerical example, a two-wire transmission line combined by spacers was considered. Natural vibration characteristics show that the in-plane vibrations of the transmission line appeared in low frequency range, which may lead to galloping.

  • The exact transmission coefficients at the interface between a uniaxial anisotropic medium and an isotropic medium at? oblique incidence are derived by applying the extended Jones matrix method. When the birefringence of the uniaxial anisotropic medium is small ($|n_e-n_o|\;{\ll}\;n_o,\;n_e$), the exact transmission coefficients are compared with those by the conventional extended Jones matrix method by Yeh et al. They showed an excellent agreement with each other. In addition, using the exact transmission coefficients, we calculated the polarization characteristics of a light through a uniaxial medium to an incident light with arbitrary polarization state at? oblique incidence. We compared the transmittances of an unpolarized light through a pair of crossed o-type polarizers by two different methods and calculated the transmittance as the variation of the optical constants of the polarizers to evaluate of the extinction ratio. The polarization analysis method using the exact transmission coefficients can be applied to polarization characteristics of a light through a uniaxial medium with large birefringence as well as to liquid crystals and to optical anisotropic material.

  • Recently around the world, coastal erosion is paying attention as a social issue. Various constructions using low-crested and submerged structures are being performed to deal with the problems. In addition, a prediction study was researched using machine learning techniques to determine the wave attenuation characteristics of low crested structure to develop prediction matrix for wave attenuation coefficient prediction matrix consisting of weights and biases for ease access of engineers. In this study, a deep neural network model was constructed to predict the wave height transmission rate of low crested structures using Tensor flow, an open source platform. The neural network model shows a reliable prediction performance and is expected to be applied to a wide range of practical application in the field of coastal engineering. As a result of predicting the wave height transmission coefficient of the low crested structure depends on various input variable combinations, the combination of 5 condition showed relatively high accuracy with a small number of input variables defined as 0.961. In terms of the time cost of the model, it is considered that the method using the combination 5 conditions can be a good alternative. As a result of predicting the wave transmission rate of the trained deep neural network model, MSE was 1.3×10-3, I was 0.995, SI was 0.078, and I was 0.979, which have very good prediction accuracy. It is judged that the proposed model can be used as a design tool by engineers and scientists to predict the wave transmission coefficient behind the low crested structure.

  • Clay-dispersed nanocomposites have been prepared by simple melt-mixing of two components, styrenic polymers with different content of functional groups and two different organophilic clays (Cloisite(R) 25A and Cloisite(R)30A) with a twin screw extruder. Dispersibility of 10-$\AA$-thick silicate layers of clay in the hybrid was investigated by using an X-ray diffraction method and a transmission electron microscope. It was found that if the interaction force between intercalant and matrix polymer is attractive, the matrix polymer intercalates more rapidly into the gallery of silicate layers. The faster intercalation of matrix polymer leads to the better dispersibility of silicate layers in the matrix polymer.
