  • Hydrogen solubility in internally oxidized Pd-Mo(Al) alloys has been studied at 323 K from the measurements of pressure-composition(p-c) isotherms. Internal oxidation of $Pd_{0.985}Al_{0.015}$ and $Pd_{0.97}Mo_{0.03}$ alloys results in the precipitation of Al and Mo particles in a matrix of pure Pd. It has been observed that the presence of the aluminum and molybdenum oxide precipitates results in an enhanced hydrogen solubility in the dilute phase region of Pd-H in a Pd/aluminum(molybdenum)oxide composites. Hydrogen solubility enhancements due to the presence of residual stresses around ceramic particles have been observed from p-c isotherms determined at 323 K after oxidation at 1073 K. The solubility enhancements in completely internally oxidized alloys are greater than that in partially oxidized alloys. The stress fields near the ceramic precipitates are the major source of the solubility enhancements. Transmission electron microscopy indicates that alumina precipitates are nanometer-sized and coherent with the Pd matrix after oxidation.

  • When the isolation between transmitter and receiver in Electronic Warfare equipment is not sufficient, the radiated noise jamming signal from the transmitter feeds back into the receiver and interferes with receiving radar pulse signal. Therefore pulse jamming and noise jamming can't be performed together in the same frequency bands. In this paper, we present a time-sharing TX/RX control technique of the switch matrix which inhibits the transmission of noise jamming signal by using the predicted gate of pulse train and also makes the corresponding channel filter operate to receive the radar pulse signal during the predicted gate pulse. This technique was implemented by EPLD and confirmed by experiment. The proposed technique enables the pulse jamming and the noise jamming to be simultaneously executed in multiple jamming environments.

  • In this paper, we present a closed-form approximation of the average sum rate of zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming (BF) with semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS). We first derive the survival probability associated with the SUS that absolute square of the channel correlation between two users is less than the orthogonalization level threshold (OLT).With this result, each distribution for the number of surviving users at each iteration of the SUS and the number of streams for transmission is calculated. Secondly, the received signal power of ZF-BF is represented as a function of the elements of the upper triangular matrix from QR decomposition of the channel matrix. Thirdly, we approximate the received signal power of ZF-BF with the SUS as the maximum of scaled chisquare random variables where the scaling factor is approximated as a function of both OLT and the number of users in the system. Putting all the above derivations and order statistics together, the approximated ergodic sum rate of ZF-BF with the SUS is shown in a closed form. The simulation results verify that the approximation tightly matches with the sample average for any OLT and even for a small number of users.

  • Basaltic ash of Udo tuff cone, Jeju Island, was almost fresh across strata, but significantly altered toward surface by supergene process. The supergene alteration of the Udo tuff was examined by using X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis for elucidating the alteration process of basaltic ash in terrestrial environments. Fresh ash particles were composed of glass matrix, plagioclase, olivine, and pyroxene. The glass matrix was selectively replaced inward by colloform alteration rinds of Fe-Ti-rich amorphous silicate nanogranules and smectite, often leaving glass core at the center of larger ash particles. Some of the dissolved species released from the altered ash particle precipitated as fine honycomb aggregates of smectite on the pore walls, contributing to the cementation and lithification of volcanic ash.

  • We have investigated the Pt doping effect on structural and electrochemical properties of amorphous vanadium oxide film, grown by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Room temperature charge-discharge measurements based on a half-cell with a constant current clearly indicated that the Pt doping could improve the cyclibility of V$_2$O$_{5}$ cathode film. Using glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GXRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis, we found that the Pt doping with l0W r.f. power induce more random amorphous structure than undoped V$_2$O$_{5}$ film. As the r.f. power of Pt increases, large amount of Pt incorporates into amorphous V$_2$O$_{5}$ and makes PtOx microcrystalline phase in amorphous matrix. This result suggests that the semicondcuting PtOx microcrystalline phase in amorphous matrix lead to a drastically faded cyclibility of 50W Pt doped V$_2$O$_{5}$ cathode film. Possible explanations are given to describe the Pt doping effect on cyclibility of vanadium oxide cathode film.de film.

  • Transformation behavior of rapidly solidified Ti-47.3Ni (at%) alloy ribbons and thermal stability of the R phase in the ribbons were investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Rapidly solidified Ti-47.3Ni alloy ribbons showed the two-stage B2-R-B19' martensitic transformation behavior. The B2-R transformation in the ribbons was observed even after annealing at 1,223 K, which was attributed to the fact that a specific orientation relationship between $Ti_2Ni$ and matrix in the ribbons is maintained after annealing at 1,223 K. The DSC peak temperature of the B2-R transformation ($T_R^*$) decreased with raising annealing temperature, which was attributed to the increased volume fraction of $Ti_2Ni$, thus causing an increased Ni content in the matrix.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the intercalation of polymer chains with organoclays and improve the thermo-mechanical properties of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) hybrids by comparing PBT hybrids synthesized using two different organoclays. The organoclays; dodecyltriphenylphosphonium-montmorillonite ($C_{12}PPh-MMT$) and dodecyltriphenylphosphonium-mica ($C_{12}PPh-Mica$), were used to fabricate the PBT hybrid fibers. Variations in the properties of the hybrid fibers with the organoclays within the polymer matrix, as well as the draw ratio (DR), are discussed. The thermo-mechanical properties and morphologies of the PBT hybrid fibers were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and mechanical tensile properties analysis. The nanostructures of the hybrid fibers were determined using both scanning and transmission electron microscopies, which showed some of the clay layers to be well dispersed within the matrix polymer, although some clustered or agglomerated particles were also detected. The thermal properties of the hybrid fibers were found to be better than those of the pure PBT fibers at a DR = 1. The tensile mechanical properties of the $C_{12}PPh-MMT$ hybrid fibers were found to worsen with increasing DR. However, the initial moduli of the $C_{12}PPh-Mica$ hybrid fibers were found to slightly increase on increasing the DR from 1 to 18.

  • This paper studies a multi-antenna wireless relay network in the presence of a jammer. In this network, the source node transmits signals to the destination node through a multi-antenna relay node which adopts the amplify-and-forward scheme, and the jammer attempts to inject additive signals on all antennas of the relay node. With the linear beamforming scheme at the relay node, this network can be modeled as an equivalent Gaussian arbitrarily varying channel (GAVC). Based on this observation, we deduce the mathematical closed-forms of the capacities for two special cases and the suboptimal achievable rate for the general case, respectively. To reduce complexity, we further propose an optimal structure of the beamforming matrix. In addition, we present a second order cone programming (SOCP)-based algorithm to efficiently compute the optimal beamforming matrix so as to maximize the transmission rate between the source and the destination when the perfect channel state information (CSI) is available. Our numerical simulations show significant improvements of our propose scheme over other baseline ones.

  • The principal fibers used in constructing the cocoon in the garden spider, Argiope aurantia, are large-diameter fibers developed from tubuliform glands and small-diameter fibers presumed to be spun by the aciniform silk glands. Scanning electron micrographs of the large-diameter fibers on both surfaces of the cocoon clearly reveal their fine structural differences. While the silk fibers on the inner surface have smooth and homogeneous appearances, each fiber on the outer surface represents a multicomponent internal structure. Examination of each fibers using transmission electron microscope also provides additional evidence that the multicomponent fibers contain numerous electron lucent fibrils embedded in an amorphous electron dense matrix. It has been also revealed that two types of secretory granules presumed to be the precursors of tubuliform fibers are closely related to the production of distinct coloration in luminal contents - brownish and yellowish components. Moreover, these electron-dense granules, possibly precursor of fibrillar component, and electron-lucent granules, possibly precursor of matrix component, are densely packed and remain close to each other without fusion. It is critical evidence that the individual tubuliform fiber is not only heterogeneous and multicomponent but also takes place in a variety at manners throughout the length of the gland.

  • Polycarbonate (PC)/sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) ionomer/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by a solution intercalation process using the SPS ionomer as a compatibilizer. The effect of an organoclay on the melt crystallization behavior of the ionomer compatibilized PC were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The melt crystallization behavior of PC was dependent on the extent of organoclay dispersion. The effect of the ionomer loading and cation size on intercalation/exfoliation efficiency of the organoclay in PC/SPS ionomer matrix was also studied using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dispersion of the organically modified clay in the polymer matrix improved with increasing ionomer compatibilizer loadings and cation size. The SPS ionomer compatibilized PC/organoclay nanocomposite showed enhanced melt crystallization compared to the SPS ionomer/PC blend. Well dispersed organoclay nanocomposites showed better crystallization than the poorly dispersed clay nanocomposites. These nanocomposites also showed better thermal stability than the SPS ionomer/PC blend.
