  • In wireless packet networks, energy and wireless resource efficiency is critical issue to addressed for wide deployment. To achieve the both goals of saving the mobile station's energy and increasing the wireless capacity, transmission power control is introduced to wireless packet networks. In the transmission power controled networks, it is not deeply studied on unfairness among transmissions with different power levels that reaches starvation. Through the performance analysis, this paper explains the throughput unfairness of high power transmission with the unfair media access probability owing to the contending node number difference and proposes a simple PHY-MAC cross layer approach.

  • In this paper, a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) consisting of a hybrid access point (H-AP) and multiple user equipment (UE), all of which operate in full-duplex (FD), is described. We first propose a transceiver structure that enables FD operation of each UE to simultaneously receive energy in the downlink (DL) and transmit information in the uplink (UL). We then provide an energy usage model in the proposed UE transceiver that accounts for the energy leakage from the transmit chain to the receive chain. It is shown that the throughput of an FD WPCN using the proposed FD UE (FD-WPCN-FD) can be maximized by optimal allocation of the UL transmission time to the UE by solving a convex optimization problem. Simulation results reveal that the use of the proposed FD UE efficiently improves the throughput of a WPCN with a practical self-interference cancellation capability at the H-AP. Compared to the WPCN with FD H-AP and half-duplex (HD) UE, FD-WPCN-FD achieved an 18% throughput gain. In addition, the throughput of FD-WPCN-FD was shown to be 25% greater than that of WPCN in which an H-AP and UE operated in HD.

  • In this paper, the optimum transmission method is proposed to save the energy and to increase the throughput of the adaptive modulation mobile radio system with frame length control. Traditionally, adaptive modulation has been used to improve the throughput using the power margin of the system design. Considering the frame length vs energy saving and adaptive modulation, the optimum transmission method is proposed for hub and mobile station each.

Traditionally, adaptive modulation has been used to improve the throughput using the power margin of the system design. Considering the instantaneous energy during the modulation method changing duration, the effective transmission method is proposed. By the simulation, the performance and effectiveness is validated.

  • In this paper, we study the problem of designing the power and number of cooperative node (CN) in the cooperation phase to maximize the average throughput for secondary user (SU), under the constraint of the total cooperation and transmission power. We first investigate the scheme of cooperative spectrum sensing without a separated control channel. Then, we prove that there indeed exist an optimal CN power when the number of CNs is fixed and an optimal CN number when CN power is fixed. The case without the constraints of the power and number of CN is also studied. Finally, numerical results demonstrate the characteristics and existences of optimal CN power and number. Meanwhile, Monte Carlo simulation results match to the theoretical results well.

  • In this letter, we design a collision resolution protocol for optical burst switching ring networks to avoid burst collision. We define the offset time condition for no burst transmission collision and manage the free time list of nodes for no burst reception collision. In order to improve the throughput, we use a fiber delay line, void-filling, and void-compression. This protocol does not require any additional procedures for bandwidth reservation such as centralized assignment of bandwidth, lightpath setup of WDM ring networks, or token capturing for the burst transmission. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve high throughput while saving 70% of wavelengths when compared to round robin with random selection, round robin with persistent, and round robin with non-persistent with only destination delay.

  • To enhance the scalability of high performance packet switches, a two-stage load-balanced switch has recently been introduced, in which each stage uses a deterministic sequence of configurations. The switch is simple to make scalable and has been proven to provide 100% throughput. However, the load-balanced switch may mis-sequence the packets. In this paper, we propose an algorithm called full frame stuff (FFS), which maintains packet order in the two-stage load-balanced switch and has excellent switching performance. This algorithm is distributed and each port can operate independently.

  • In this paper, we present an analytical method for estimating the saturation throughput of an 802.11 ad hoc LAN in the presence of noise distorting transmitted frames. This is the first method that allows studying analytically the 802.11 network performance with consideration of correlated channel failures usually inherent to realistic wireless channels. With the study, we consider the possible packet fragmentation that can be adopted to reduce the performance degradation caused by noise-induced distortions. In addition to the throughput, our method allows estimating the probability of a packet rejection occurring when the number of packet transmission retries attains its limit. The obtained numerical results of investigating 802.11 LANs by the developed method are validated by simulation and show high estimation accuracy as well as the method efficiency in determining the optimal fragmentation threshold.

  • In this paper, an improved binary-CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) system for high speed multimedia data transmission will be presented. The improved binary CDMA technology will be used in municipal wireless network. The new name of the system is the Guardian system using a binary CDMA technology. The Guardian system can provide high data rate, and improve its throughput by minimizing latency from the limitation of resources of system bus during multimedia data transmission. Finally, we analyze the performance of Guardian modem according to the report of wireless data transmission test.

  • An important issue of supporting multi-users with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements over wireless networks is how to optimize the systematic scheduling by intelligently utilizing the available network resource while, at the same time, to meet each communication service QoS requirement. In this work, we study the problem of a variety of communication services over multi-media heterogeneous cognitive OFDM system. We first divide the communication services into two parts. Multimedia applications such as broadband voice transmission and real-time video streaming are very delay-sensitive (DS) and need guaranteed throughput. On the other side, services like file transmission and email service are relatively delay tolerant (DT) so varying-rate transmission is acceptable. Then, we formulate the scheduling as a convex optimization problem, and propose low complexity distributed solutions by jointly considering channel assignment, bit allocation, and power allocation. Unlike prior works that do not care computational complexity. Furthermore, we propose the FAASA (Fairness Assured Adaptive Sub-carrier Allocation) algorithm for both DS and DT users, which is a dynamic sub-carrier allocation algorithm in order to maximize throughput while taking into account fairness. We provide extensive simulation results which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes.
