  • Objectives : This study aims to evaluate current clinical evidence of traditional Korean medicine treatment on wrist pain with carpal tunnel syndrome. Methods : Ten Korean databases were searched for prospective clinical trials of traditional Korean medicine therapy on wrist pain with carpal tunnel syndrome from the time of their inception to February, 2015. Studies conducted in Korean, Chinese and English were searched. Risk of bias in included non-randomized controlled trials was assessed by the Cochrane handbook procedure. Results : Four non-randomized controlled trials were included. A high risk of bias was observed in all trials. All of the included studies reported favorable effects being experienced by an intervention group compared to a baseline or control group. Included studies never described any occurrence of adverse events. Conclusions : There is no evidence that traditional Korean medicine treatments are effective for treating wrist pain associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. All of the included studies lacked appropriate methodological qualities and internal validity. Future well-designed clinical trials that evaluate the effects and safety of traditional Korean medicine treatment for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome are needed.

  • Five phase theory has significant effect on Traditional Chinese Medicine, which puts its emphasis on correlation and integrity. However, the five phase theory itself has a limitation that it cannot reflect the general correlation and special features of affairs. Traditional Chinese Medicine pertains the five organs to five elements, absorbing the essence of the five phase theory, and transcending the limitation of the five phase theory in practice. Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine and other traditional medicine theories can be called as "five viscera correlation theory". On the course of modernization of traditional medicine, the effects among the five viscera can be concluded to 3 correlations of promotion, coordination and inhibition, to illustrate the integrity and correlation theory of traditional medicine from different approaches.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate and valuate currently provided database management systems (DBMS) of traditional Korean medical knowledge. Methods: We searched DBMS on the web and smart device application markets (Apple App Store and Google Play Store). Key words for searching were 'traditional medicine', 'acupuncture', 'moxibustion', 'herbal medicine', and '한의학'. We looked into each DBMS to find out its scopes and limits, and each was valuated according to its functionality, accessibility, and utility. Results: 186 DBMS of traditional Korean medical knowledge were investigated and 91% of them were applications for smart devices. Almost all DBMS provided acupuncture and herb information, and a small amount of DMBS provided prescription and research paper information. Functionality, accessibility, and utility valuation were performed by using scoring system from 0 to 2. Mean values of functionality, accessibility, and utility were 0.86, 1.29, and 1.09. Conclusions: On the whole, high accessibility and low functionality were found, and various data-calculating functions were not implemented. Further researches and developments about traditional Korean medical knowledge DBMS are necessary to provide correct traditional Korean medical information and to support the studies about Korean medicine.

  • Objectives This study aimed to analyze the trends of Korean traditional medicine treatment for idiopathic scoliosis. Methods We searched clinical studies used Korean traditional medicine for idiopathic scoliosis in 4 Korean online databases 'Koreanstudies Information Service System', 'Earticle', 'Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System', 'Research Information Sharing Service'. We selected 18 studies and analyzed their characteristics according to author, publication year, number/sex/age of patient, treatment period, intervention, outcome measure and result. Results Eighteen case report studies were selected by criteria and randomized controlled trials were not found. The most frequently used therapy was Chuna therapy. Cobb's angle was most commonly used outcome measure. Conclusions In this study, we reviewed studies used Korean traditional medicine treatments for idiopathic scoliosis. However, evidence is limited because all selected studies were case reports. This study suggests that further clinical studies are needed to provide higher evidence about Korean traditional medicine treatment for idiopathic scoliosis.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to review external approaches using acupuncture and related treatments of hyperpigmentation disorders and their classification in traditional medicine. Methods and Results : Hyperpigmentation was recorded for the first time in Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases published in 610 A.D. This suggests that the symptom has already been recognized as an independent disease in East Asia for more than 1,400 years. Over the course of several centuries, there has been a significant evolution in the traditional treatments for hyperpigmentation. There are many different types of therapy, including body acupuncture, intradermal acupuncture, ear acupuncture, ear acupressure, blood-letting treatment, pharmacopuncture, plum-blossom needle therapy, burning acupuncture therapy, moxibustion, and guasha. In addition, the traditional classification of hyperpigmentation has been changing shape. However, no attempts have been made to establish the academic linkage between the modern classification of hyperpigmentation disorders and the traditional one, on account of different concepts and names of the ailment. This study was designed in an attempt to identify the linkage of the categorization of the Korean Standard Classification of Disease (KCD) and the traditional classification. Conclusions : Through this literature review, we found that there has been a significant evolution in the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders in East Asia. Traditional medical treatment for skin disease, including hyperpigmentation, is expected to be further developed with the advancement of science and technology.
