Presenting desirable direction of Korean interior landscape, the present studies were performed to survey the status of interior landscape of the Korean traditional and modern house in order to compare each other about the landscaping characteristics. The results were as follows: 1. Interior landscape of traditional houses put emphasis on mental aspects through furnitures, decorative elements, symbolic signs, paintings, writings, and moderate plants. 2. Interior landscape of modern house accentuated visual beauty by using westernized furnitures and decorative elements, and exotic plants. 3. These days we abundantly use exotic interior plants, but we need to develop native plant materials which have visual values and are well grown. 4. It is suggested that we should make effects to find and develop Korean interior landscape style which succeed from traditional interior landscape that has more accentuated on mental aspect.

The goal of this study is to identify the new Architectural type of house and Landscape design pattern of the collective housing area in American garden city, Midlothian near Richmond of Virginia. I had been surveyed old houses of the Virginia and new single family houses and landscape design style of Mariners village to find a different style of houses and lots. The Richmond, capital city of Virginia, is surrounded by five suburban areas and counties. One of them is the Chesterfield where it has main street of Midlothian garden city. The city of Midlothian has a function of residence area both to stay in the forest garden and to go to downtown office of Richmond. There are a lot of collective housing area out of the capital city. I surveyed house form, lots, and site design pattern of the Mariners village in Midlothian. The community of Mariners shows a particular characteristics and harmonious pattern of suburban residence area in a view point of new project. There are three results of this study as follows: First, the types of house in suburban garden city, Midlothian, are focused on vernacular Colonial style with country house, traditional house, and front gable house form which are an unique new American single home. Second, the landscape design of this collective housing area, the Mariners village, has a unity view of residence community, harmony between house and lots, and a sensitive cul-de-sac pattern and loops type with rational land using based on the forest topology. Third, the Mariners village shows that the design concept of landscape architecture has to consider of traditionalism, naturalism, and living condition of residents.
In the meantime, the study of traditional and contemporary house had been produced so many achievements in korea, but modern house is yet to be solved, Accordingly, It is necessary to develop and present the basic research data in order to build up an objective study for urban house in the modern age(1910-1945), Following to a study on the foreigner's house in grid-type settlement of Open Ports, in this research is to investigate and analyze modern houses of urban areas in korean inland, and then clarify types and changes of them. In the first year($1995{\sim}96$), the modern houses of Central Inland Districts(arrounding river Kumgang)-Kunsan kanggyong Puyo Kongju Pugang Chongju were investigated by the layout of room, the construction and materials, the design and style, etc. In the second year($1996{\sim}97$), the modern houses of Open Market(開市場)-Seoul Taegu Kwangju Taejon Chonju were conducted to investigate as above. The traditional house transformed by differentiation and addition of room(kan), the various types were respectively adopted for the korean reforming and western cultural house. In the layout of room, the types of plan were gradually concentrated from the single wings of korean traditional house. The korean traditional house was later improved through the introduction of entrance, corridor, and internal toilet/bathroom. But the korean under-floor heating system(andal) and a series of three rooms had been entirely maintained, composed of master bedroom/living room(daechung)/room. And the traditional town house with shop and storage, being built closely to each other and walled up both sides, it had taken gradually the extensive characteristics in itself. By the displacement of shop/dwelling/ storage. the various types were respectively adopted for the separated, multi-storied, and complex type. The type of them was gradually changed to the narrow and linear form. And so with the stockpile of fundamental datas about modern houses in korean urban areas, we expect these results contribute to the knowledge of the spatial characteristics of urban house at present which are required to the understanding of transition as well as types.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the acceptance of the On-dol, Korean underfloor heating system, in the official residences built by the japanese colonist in 1905~1945. The On-dol is the main element that formed Korean housing culture throughout our her history. Since the climate of Korea is colder than that of Japan, the Japanese-style house built in Korea needed to take measures for the harsher winter. Therefore the official residences built during the japanese colonial period, built after the Japanese-style house, accepted the On-dol as additional heating system for their houses. Over forty years the official residences were constructed in large quantities, and many of the official residences also installed the On-dol. Some important changes were discovered about the acceptance of the On-dol. To define this concretely, this study was performed empirically through the comparison and analysis of governmental architectural drawings. There is great significance to consider that an architectural element of Korea influenced the Japanese-style houses. In conclusion, differences between the official residences with the On-dol and those without, during the latter stage of the japanese colonial period have founded. These results demonstrate that this element of traditional korean architecture affected the development of foreign houses built in Korea.
