  • An experimental study has been carried out on square plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. A total of 78 specimens were loaded to failure in axial compression and investigated in both axial and transverse directions. Slenderness of the columns, number of wrap layers and concrete strength were the test parameters. Compressive stress, axial and hoop strains were recorded to evaluate the stress-strain relationship, ultimate strength and ductility of the specimens. Results clearly demonstrate that composite wrapping can enhance the structural performance of square columns in terms of both maximum strength and ductility. On the basis of the effective lateral confining pressure of composite jacket and the effective FRP strain coefficient, new peak stress equations were proposed to predict the axial strength and corresponding strain of FRP-confined square concrete columns. This model incorporates the effect of the effective circumferential FRP failure strain and the effect of the effective lateral confining pressure. The results show that the predictions of the model agree well with the test data.

  • To investigate the relationship between strain distribution and tensile properties of brittle material, five types of tensile coupon of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) modified the tab portion in order to have a strain distribution including S0, SD1, SD2, SV1, SV2 were tested. The ultimate stress and strain of SD2 and SV2 which was intended to have larger strain distribution were smaller than those of SD1 and SV1, that was more clearly shown in the test results of the symmetric coupons (SV series) than the asymmetric coupons (SD series). In addition, the ultimate stress and strain of most coupons with strain distribution in this study were decreased when compared to the control group with uniform strain. These results were analyzed in various ways through 1) the average of the strain values directly measured by the strain gages, 2) the converted strain calculated by dividing the total deformation by the effective length, and 3) the ultimate effective strain derived from both the elastic modulus and the ultimate load. The values measured by strain gage indicates response of the local region precisely, but it does not represent the response from whole section. However, the converted strain and effective strain can supplement disadvantage of gage because they represent the average response of whole section. In particular, the effective strain can provide rupture strain conservatively, which can be utilized in practice, when the value obtained by strain gage was not effective due to gage damage or abnormal gage readings near ultimate load. This value provides a value that can be used even when partial rupture has occurred and is reasonably useful for specimens with strain distribution.

  • To reduce the forming load due to the temperature drop, during the hot forging process, a reheating hot forging process design is required that to repeat heating and forging. However, if the critical strain required for recrystallization is not induced during forging and grain growth becomes dominant due to the reduction in dislocation density due to repeated heating, the mechanical properties may deteriorate. Therefore, in this study, Inconel 706 alloy was applied, and the grain refinement behavior was comparatively analyzed according to the number of reheating times and effective strain during reheating hot forging process. Reheating was carried out with a total compression rate of 40% up to 4 times. The Inconel 706 compression test specimens heated once showed finer grains as the effective strain increased due to the dynamic recrystallization phenomenon. However, as the number of heating increases, grain refinement was observed even in a low effective strain distribution of 0.43 due to static recrystallization during reheating. Moreover, grain growth occurs at a relatively low effective strain of 0.43 when the number of reheating is four or more. Therefore, it was effective to apply an effective strain of 0.43 or more during hot forging to Inconel 706 in order to induce crystallization through grain refinement and improve the properties of forged products. In addition, we could notice that up to three reheating times condition was appropriate to prevent grain growth and maintain fine grain size.

  • The purpose of the present study was to explore the most effective body region and cooling temperature to alleviate heat strain of workers in hot environments. We developed liquid cooling hood, vest, sleeves and socks and applied the water temperatures of 10, 15, 20, and 25℃ through the liquid cooling garments in a hot and humid environment (33℃ air temperature and 70% RH air humidity). A healthy young male participated in a total of 16 experimental trials (four cooling garments × four cooling temperatures) with the following protocol: 10-min rest, 40-min exercise on a treadmill and 10-min recovery. The results showed that rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, and ratings of perceived exertion during exercise; heart rate and diastolic blood pressure during recovery; and total sweat rate were lower for the vest condition than other garment conditions(p < .05). However, there was no differences in mean skin temperature among the four cooling garments when we compared the values converted by covering area(%BSA). When we classified the results by cooling temperature, there were no consistent differences in thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses among the four temperatures, but 25℃ water temperature was evaluated as being the most ineffective cooling temperature in terms of subjective responses. In conclusion, the results indicated that wearing cooling vest with < 20℃ cooling temperature can alleviate heat strain of workers in hot and humid environments. If the peripheral body regions are cooled with liquid cooling garments, larger cooling area with lower cooling temperature than 10℃ would be effective to reduce heat strain of workers. Further studies with a vaild number of subjects are required.

  • An UBET(Upper Bound Elemental Techniquel) program has been developed to analyze forging load, die-cavity filling and effective strain distribution for flashless non-axisymmetric forging. To analyze the process easily, it is suggested that the deforma- tion is divided into two different parts. Those are axisymmetric part in corner and plane- strain part in lateral. The total power consumption is minimized through combination of two deformation parts by building block method, form which the upper-bound forging load, the flow pattern, the grid pattern, the velocity distribution and the effective strain are deter- mined. To show the merit of flashless forging, the results of flashless and flash-forging processes are compared through theory and experiment. Experiments have been carried out with plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the forging load and the flow pattern are in good agrement with the experimental results.

  • Activation bacteria, identified from commercial microbial products, were applied to leachate treatment. Total seven strains of bacteria Enterobacteriaceae spp. (5), Bacillus sp. (1), Aeromonas sp. (1) were seeded in the leachate and cultured in the shaking incubator at 25$^{\circ}$C and 250 rpm. While cultured, they were sampled in given time intervals and the removal rates of SS, COD, BOD, T-N.and T-P were measured an indicators of leachate treatment. Through the screening test, four of 7 strains of bacteria were considered to be effective and they were named as "effective group". The capability of leachate treatment was observed on three different groups of bacteria single, effctive, and total mixed. The result showed that the removal rates of COD and SS for the total mixed group were 64 and 71% respectively. BOD removal rate was reached nearly 99% by seeding of effective griup and removal rates of T-P and T-N were 83 and 82% respectively. However seeding of single strain was less effective than that of any mixed group in leachate treatment.

  • Strain localization is important phenomenon since it governs the total behavior or ultimate loads in various kinds of engineering problems. Establishment of an analysis method for strain localization phenomena is also of great concern for expansion of fracture mechanics of concrete. Inside zone of localization, a decrese in stress is accompanied by an increse in strain; outside the strain decreses. All deformation localization phenomenon cannot be predicted by both the classical stress-strain formulation and the linear elastic fracture mechanics. In this paper, a simple one dimensional model including localized deformation zone is studied under compressive and tensile loading. When the model is loaded. localization is assumed to occur uniformly in a finite region and material outside the localization zone is modelled as elastic unloading occurs. Size effects of effective elastic moduli under compression and tension in localization zone are examined.

  • In coupon test of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) as brittle materials, the converted strain derived from total deformation and effective length was introduced and its advantages were described. In general, measured value from strain gauge is used for determining the tensile properties of material, but it is not quite effective in CFRP because brittle material can not redistribute its stress and it only represents local behavior. For this reason, the converted strain response can be utilized effectively as a supplementary indicator, which evaluated the average value of tensile properties in brittle material and confirmed the strain measured by strain gauge. In addition, the converted strain clearly visualized 1) the effect of initial internal strain caused by fabrication errors and setup misalignment when applying gripping force and 2) post-response of partial rupture of CFRP caused by non-uniform strain distribution. non-uniform strain distribution.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chitosan, chitosan oligomer and beef tallow of different levels on lipid metabolism in rats, Seventy male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were blocked into 10 groups according to body weight , and were raised for 4 weeks. Dietary fat levels were 20% en and 40% en, and chitosan and chitosan oligomer were given at levels of 05, 3%, and 5%(wt/wt) of diet. The results are summarized as follows, chitosan oligomer supplement decreased serum total lipid, as chitosan 양, and exhibited a tendency to decrease serum total cholesterol. Chitosan oligomer supplement tended to increase the HDL cholesterol ; total cholesterol ration as chitosan did. Liver total lipid and triglyceride concentration were lower in high fat groups than in low fat groups. Liver total lipid concentrations was decreased slightly by chitosan and sigfnificantly by chitosna ligomer. Epididymal fat pad total lipid. total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration were slightly decreased by chitosan and chitosan oligomer supplement, especially in high fat groups. fat absorptivity was decreased by low fat level, chitisan and chitosan oligamer supplement. Fecal excretion of total lipid and triglyceride were increased by high fat level, chitosan and chi샌무 oligomer supplement. However, fecal excretion of total cholesterol was increased by high fat level and chitosan supplement. This indicated that chitosan and chitosan oligomer were effective in interfering with lipid and triglyceride absorption, In conclusion, chitosan oligomer at levels of 3% and 5% has more effective lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride lowering activity than chitosan.
