  • In this study, the generating of torque regarding the Control Moment Gyro (CMG) is proportional to the angular velocity of gimbal. This is the case because gimbal affects the attitude control of the satellite directly, and it is necessary to reduce the incidence of torque ripple of gimbal. In this paper, the cause of the torque ripple of gimbal is reviewed and mathematically modeled by assuming the friction imbalance of bearing, the magnetic field and the phase current imbalance of the motor. We are able to confidently estimate the modeling parameters of gimbal disturbance using a constant speed test, and then analyze the influence of applying feedforward control to our modeling. Additionally, the simulation results show that the torque ripple and angular velocity fluctuations are reduced when apply this modeling to the identified study parameters. Finally, we present the disturbance reduction technique using our disturbance modeling.

  • A new control method for precision robust position control of a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented in the paper. Precision position control is obtained for the PMSM system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method. Recently, many of these drive systems use the PMSM to avoid backlashes. However, the disadvantages of the motor are high cost and complex control because of nonlinear characteristics. Also, the load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the motor flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. There is the problem of uncertainty to obtain very high precision position control. Therefore, a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of unknown parameter and torque disturbance in this paper. The system stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observer gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current which gives fast response. The experimental results are presented in the paper using DSP TMS320c31.

  • The external disturbance torque acting on a low earth orbit spacecraft was analyzed. For the Earth pointing attitude, the maximum torque to the spacecraft is about $8.3{\times}10^{-4}$ Nms and the momentum accumulated for an orbit is about 1.4 Nms and for the Sun pointing attitude, the maximum torque to the spacecraft is about $1.6{\times}10^{-3}$ Nms and the momentum is accumulated about 3.0 Nms in the spacecraft body reference frame. The analysis results confirm that the size of magnetic torquer selected previously for the satellite is sufficient to manage the accumulated momentum by considering the dumping capacity for an orbit.

  • This paper presents a speed controller method based on the disturbance torque observer for high-performance speed control of the brushless DC (RLDC) motor. In case of the speed control of robot arms and tracking applications with lower stiffness, we cannot design the speed controller gain to be very large from the viewpoint of the system stability Thus, the feedforward compensation method using disturbance torque observer was proposed. This method can improve the speed characteristic without increasing the speed controller gain. The speed characteristic against disturbance torque can be improved when the bandwidth of the speed controller cannot be made large enough. Consequently, the speed control of the BLDC motor for the high-performance application become achieved.

  • This paper presents steering controller for unintended lane departure avoidance under crosswind using vehicle lateral disturbance estimation. Vehicles exposed to crosswind are more likely to deviate from lane, which can lead to accidents. To prevent this, a lateral disturbance estimator and steering controller for compensating disturbance have been proposed. The disturbance affecting lateral motion of the vehicle is estimated using Kalman filter, which is on the basis of the 2-DOF bicycle model and Electric Power Steering (EPS) module. A sliding mode controller is designed to avoid unintended the lane departure using the estimated disturbance. The controller is based on the 2-DOF bicycle model and the vision-based error dynamic model. A torque controller is used to provide appropriate assist torque to driver. The performance of proposed estimator and controller is evaluated via computer simulation using Matlab/Simulink.
