This study shows an implementation of partial holes in an initial design domain in order to improve convergences of topology optimization algorithms. The method is associated with a bubble method as introduced by Eschenauer et al. to overcome slow convergence of boundary-based shape optimization methods. However, contrary to the bubble method, initial holes are only implemented for initializations of optimization algorithm in this approach, and there is no need to consider a characteristic function which defines hole's deposition during every optimization procedure. In addition, solid and void regions within the initial design domain are not fixed but merged or split during optimization Procedures. Since this phenomenon activates finite changes of design parameters without numerically calculating movements and positions of holes, convergences of topology optimization algorithm can be improved. In the present study, material topology optimization designs of Michell-type beam utilizing the initial design domain with initial holes of varied sizes and shapes is carried out by using SIMP like a density distribution method. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency and simplicity of the present method.

The objective of this study is the development of size, shape and topology discrete optimum design algorithm which is based on the genetic algorithms. The algorithm can perform both shape and topology optimum designs of trusses. The developed algorithm was implemented in a computer program. For the optimum design, the objective function is the weight of trusses and the constraints are stress and displacement. The basic search method for the optimum design is the genetic algorithms. The algorithm is known to be very efficient for the discrete optimization. The genetic algorithm consists of genetic process and evolutionary process. The genetic process selects the next design points based on the survivability of the current design points. The evolutionary process evaluates the survivability of the design points selected from the genetic process. The efficiency and validity of the developed size, shape and topology discrete optimum design algorithms were verified by applying the algorithm to optimum design examples

The concept of reliability has been applied to the topology optimization based on a reliability index approach or a performance measure approach. Since these approaches, called double-loop single vector approach, require the nested optimization problem to obtain the most probable point in the probabilistic design domain, the time for the entire process makes the practical use infeasible. In this work, new reliability-based topology optimization method is proposed by utilizing single-loop single-vector approach, which approximates searching the most probable point analytically, to reduce the time cost. The results of design examples show that the proposed method provides efficiency curtailing the time for the optimization process and accuracy satisfying the specified reliability.

Topology optimization is applied for the optimal design of various products to ensure weight reduction and productivity improvement. Reducing the weight of the mold while maintaining its rigidity can ensure shortening of the production cycle, stabilization of the mold temperature, and reduction of mold material costs. In this study, a topology optimization technique was applied to the optimal design of the injection mold, and a topology-optimized model of the mold was obtained. First, the injection mold for the square specimens was modeled. Subsequently, a structural analysis was performed by implementing a load condition generated during the injection molding process. Topology optimization was performed based on the structural analysis results, and the models of the initial and topology-optimized designs were manufactured at 1/4 magnification using a 3D printer. Consequently, compared with the existing model, the weight of the topology-optimized model decreased by 9.8%, and the manufacturing time decreased by 7.61%.

Weight reduction for an automobile body is being sought for the fuel efficiency and the energy conservation. One way of the efforts is adopting Ultra Light Steel Auto Body (ULSAB) concept. The ULSAB concept can be used for the light weight of an automobile door with the tailor welded blank (TWB). A design process is defined for the TWB. The inner panel of door is designed by the TWB and optimization. The design starts from an existing component. At first, the hinge and inner reinforcements are removed. In the conceptual design stage, topology optimization is conducted to find the distribution of variable thicknesses. The number of parts and the welding lines are determined from the topology design. In the detailed design process, size optimization is carried out to find thickness while stiffness constraints are satisfied. The final parting lines are determined by shape optimization.

A study on the topology optimization of a Hard-Disk-Driver(HDD) actuator arm is presented. The purpose of the present wert is to increase the natural frequency of tole first lateral mode of the HDD actuator arm under the constraint of total moment of inertia, so as to facilitate the position control of the high speed actuator arm. The first lateral mode is an important factor in the position control process. Thus the topology optimization for 2-D model of the HDD actuator arm is considered. A new objective function corresponding to multieigenvalue optimization is suggested to improve the solution of the eigenvalue optimization problem. The material density of the structure is treated as the design variable and the intermediate density is penalized. The effects of different element types and material property functions on the final topology are studied. When the problem is discretized using 8-node element of a uniform density, tole smoothly-varying density field is obtained without checker-board patterns incurred. AS a result of 7he study, an improved design of the HDD actuator arm is suggested. Dynamic characteristics of the suggested design are compared computationally with those of the old design. With the same amount of the moment of inertia, the natural frequency of the first lateral mode of the suggested design is subsequently increased over the existing one.

A study on the topology optimization of Hard-Disk-Driver(HDD) actuator arm in free vibration is presented. In this paper, the shape design process is briefly discussed emphasizing the use of topology optimization in the conceptual design stage. The basic idea is to view feasible domains for sensitivity region concepts. In this method, the main process consists of two steps: as the design moves further inside the feasible domain using Taguchi method, and thus becoming more successful topology optimization, the sensitivity region becomes larger. In designing a double-eccentric butterfly valve, related to hydrodynamic performance and disc structure, are discussed where the use of topology optimization has proven to dramatically improve an existing design and significantly decrease the development time of a shape design. CFD analysis results demonstrate the validity of this approach.
The technique of integrated design optimization is proposed to design spatial structures. Various element technologies such as topology optimization, layout editing and size optimization processes are used in an integrated manner to improve the performance of spatial structures. In order to demonstrate the present technique, a unit spatial structure is optimized and numerical results are described here.

This research proposes a reliability-based topology optimization (RBTO) using the finite element method. RBTO is a topology optimization based on probabilistic (or reliability) constraints. Young's modulus, thickness, and loading are considered as the uncertain variables and RBTO is applied to static and eigenvalue problems. The RBTO problems are formulated and a sensitivity analysis is performed. In order to compute probability constraints, two methods-RIA and PMA-are used. Several examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing the classical safety factor method.
