  • The alloys were prepared by a non-consumable vacuum arc melting and homogenized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 24 hrs. Two kind of surface modifications were performed alkali treatment in 5.0M NaOH solution subsequent and heat treatment in vacuum furnace at $600^{\circ}C$, and were oxidizing treatment at the temperature range of 550 to $750^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. After surface modification, these samples were soaked in SBF which consists of nearly the same ion concentration as human blood plasma. Cytotoxicity tests were performed in MTT assay treated L929 fibroblast cell culture, using indirect methods. A porous and thin activated layer was formed on Titanium and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy by the alkali treatment. A bone-like hydroxyapatite was nucleated on the activated porous surfaces during the in vitro test. However, Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloys showed better bioactive properties than Titanium. According to XRD results, oxide layers composed of mostly $TiO_2$(rutile) phases. Cytotoxicity test also revealed that moderate oxidation treatment lowers cell toxicity and Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy showed better results compared with Titanium.

  • PURPOSE. This study focused on in vitro cell differentiation and surface characteristics in a magnesium coated titanium surface implanted on using a plasma ion source. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 40 commercially made pure titanium discs were prepared to produce Ti oxide machined surface (M) and Mg-incorporated Ti oxide machined surface (MM). Surface properties were analyzed using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). On each surface, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, alizarin red S staining for mineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, and quantitative analysis of osteoblastic gene expression, were evaluated. Actin ring formation assay and gene expression analysis of TRAP and GAPDH performing RT-PCR were performed to characterize osteoclast differentiation on mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs). RESULTS. MM showed similar surface morphology and surface roughness with M, but was slightly smoother after ion implantation at the micron scale. M was more hydrophobic than MM. No significant difference between surfaces on ALP activity at 7 and 14 days were observed. Real-time PCR analyses showed similar levels of mRNA expression of the osteoblast phenotype genes; osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN), bone sialoprotein (BSP), and collagen 1 (Col 1) in cell grown on MM at 7, 14 and 21 days. Alizarin red S staining at 21 days showed no significant difference. BMMs differentiation increased in M and MM. Actin ring formation assay and gene expression analysis of TRAP showed osteoclast differentiation to be more active on MM. CONCLUSION. Both M and MM have a good effect on osteoblastic cell differentiation, but MM may speed the bone remodeling process by activating on osteoclast differentiation.

  • In an attempt to regain function and aesthetics in the craniofacial region, different biomaterials, including titanium, hydroxyapatite, biodegradable polymers and composites, have been widely used as a result of the loss of craniofacial bone. Although these materials presented favorable success rates, osseointegration and antibacterial properties are often hard to achieve. Although bone-implant interactions are highly dependent on the implant's surface characteristics, infections following traumatic craniofacial injuries are common. As such, poor osseointegration and infections are two of the many causes of implant failure. Further, as increasingly complex dental repairs are attempted, the likelihood of infection in these implants has also been on the rise. For these reasons, the treatment of craniofacial bone defects and dental repairs for long-term success remains a challenge. Various approaches to reduce the rate of infection and improve osseointegration have been investigated. Furthermore, recent and planned tissue engineering developments are aimed at improving the implants' physical and biological properties by improving their surfaces in order to develop craniofacial bone substitutes that will restore, maintain and improve tissue function. In this review, the commonly used biomaterials for craniofacial bone restoration and dental repair, as well as surface modification techniques, antibacterial surfaces and coatings are discussed.

  • Superfinishing is essential for mirror surfaces, because among mechanical components cylindrical workpieces such as spindles must maintain precision and reliability with respect to functional characteristics. However, research on standardization of polishing film application combination to obtain mirror surfaces is insufficient. Consequently, this has been a factor in rising costs of mechanical components. Therefore, in this study, experiments have been conducted to determine efficient polishing film application combination for mirror surfaces ranging from ductile materials such as SM45C, brass, aluminium 7075, and titanium to brittle materials such as $Al_20_3$, SiC, $Si_3N_4$, and $ZrO_2$. From the experimental results, efficient polishing film application combination for metallic materials and ceramic materials is confirmed.

  • For maintenance of an ailing or failed implant it is essential to treat the implant fixture surface so as to remove bacterial endotoxin and make a surface tolerated by surrounding soft and hard tissue. Thus in this study the method that makes the smoothest surface treated with a high speed diamond bur, a low speed diamond bur, a stone, a rubber point or Jetpolisher was studied. With the profilomenter a mean value of $R_{max}$ was measured. The hight speed diamond, the rubber point and the Jetpolisher showed a mean $R_{max}\;7.77{\mu}m$. The low speed diamond bur, the rubber, point and the Jetolisher made a mean value of $R_{max}\;8.44{\mu}m$. The stone, the rubber point and the Jetolisher showed the smoothest surfaces with a mean value of $R_{max}\;6.24{\mu}m$. TPS (titanium plasma sprayed) areas showed a mean vlaue of $R_{max}\;24.42{\mu}m$, and the smooth surfaced titanium disc manufactured by the company (IMZ, Germany) shows a mean value of $R_{max}\;3.00{\mu}m$. Under the SEM examination the disc treated with a high speed diamond bur, a rubber point and a Jetpolisher showed partially remaining TPS particles, but the height of these particles were reduced remarkably compared with those of the original TPS. The disc treated with a low speed diamond bur, a rubber point and a Jetpolisher showed a rough topography with remaining TPS on the entire surface. A stone, a rubber point and a Jetpolisher removed almost TPS and the bulk titanium metal was exposed and some scratches were made by the stone. All treated discs were revealed as rougher than the smooth surface disc manufactured by the company. An untreated TPS disc shows a very irregular surface and a $40{\mu}m$ height of the plasma sprayed areas.

  • It is investigated that that the physical properties of Glutathione layer formed on gold surfaces may make an effect on the distribution of either gold particle adsorbed to the $TiO_2$ surface or vice versa with the adjustment of the electrostatic interactions. For the investigation, the atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. With the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, the forces were quantitatively analyzed to acquire the surface potential and charge density of the surfaces for each salt concentration and each pH value. The surface potential and charge density dependence on the salt concentration was described with the law of mass action, and the pH dependence was explained with the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 8 and 11, was consistent with the prediction from the law. It was found that the Glutathione layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the titanium dioxide surfaces at pH 8 and 11, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the Glutathione layer.

  • The surfaces of titanium specimens were modified by immersion in calcium phosphate buffered solutions (pH 5.8, 7.0, 8.0) for 10 days and simulated body fluid(SBF) for 30 days by turns. The modified surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffractometery(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer(FT-IR), and compared with specimen immersed in only SBF. The results indicated that the immersion in calcium phosphate buffered solutions accelerated the formation of the surface films. The formed layer showed granular shaped microstructure, and recognized as calcium phosphate such as a hydroxyapatite(HA) or a $\beta$-tri-calcium phosphate($\beta$-TCP). The thickness of the layer increased of the buffered solutions in order of pH 8.0, 7.0 and 5.8 and the density increased in order of pH 7.0, 8.0 and 5.8.

  • Recently, extensive studies have been carried out to enhance various performance aspects such as the durability, lifespan, and hardness by combining diverse materials or developing novel materials. The utilization of superhydrophobic surfaces, particularly in the automotive, textile, and medical device industries, has gained momentum to achieve improved performance and efficiency. Superhydrophobicity refers to a surface state where the contact angle when water droplets fall is above 150°, while the contact angle during sliding motion is smaller than 10°. Superhydrophobic surfaces offer the advantage of water droplets not easily sliding off, maintaining a cleaner state as the droplets leave the surface. Surface modification involves two fundamental steps to achieve superhydrophobicity: surface roughness increase and surface energy reduction. However, existing methods, such as time-consuming processes and toxic organic precursors, still face challenges. In this study, we propose a method for superhydrophobic surface modification using lasers, aiming to create roughness in micro/nanostructures, ensuring durability while improving the production time and ease of fabrication. The mechanical durability of superhydrophobic samples treated with lasers is comparatively evaluated against chemical etching samples. The experimental results demonstrate superior mechanical durability through the laser treatment. Therefore, this research provides an effective and practical approach to superhydrophobic surface modification, highlighting the utility of laser treatment.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The cast abutment has advantages of overcoming angulation problem and esthetic problem. However, when a gold-machined UCLA abutment undergoes casting, the abutment surfaces in contact with the implant may change. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the detorque values of prefabricated machined abutments with gold-premachined cast-on UCLA abutments before and after casting in two types of internal implant-abutment connection systems: (1) internal hexagonal joint, (2) internal octagonal joint. Furthermore, the detorque values of two implant-abutment connection systems were compared. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty internal hexagonal implants with an 11-degree taper and twenty internal octagonal implants with an 8-degree taper were acquired. Ten prefabricated titanium abutments and ten gold-premachined UCLA abutments were used for each systems. Each abutment was torqued to 30 N㎝ according to the manufacturer's instructions and detorque value was recorded. The detorque values were measured once more, after casting with gold alloy for UCLA abutment, and preparation for titanium abutments. Group means were calculated and compared using independent t-test and paired t-test (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS: The results were as follows: 1. The detorque values between titanium abutments and UCLA-type abutments showed significant differences in internal octagonal implants (P<0.05), not in internal hexagonal implants (P>0.05). 2. In comparison of internal hexagonal and octagonal implants, the detorque values of titanium abutments had significant differences between two connection systems on the initial analysis (P<0.05), not on the second analysis (P>0.05) and the detorque values of UCLA-type abutments were not significantly different between two connection systems (P>0.05). 3. The detorque values of titanium abutments and UCLA-type abutments decreased significantly on the second analysis than the initial analysis in internal hexagonal implants (P<0.05), not in internal octagonal implants (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Casting procedures of UCLA-type abutments had no significant effect on screw loosening in internal implant-abutment connection systems, and UCLA-type abutments showed higher detorque values than titanium abutments in internal octagonal implants.

  • Statement of problem. The success of osseointegration can be enhanced with an implant that has improved surface characteristics. Anodic oxidation is one of the surface modifying method to achieve osseointegration. Voltage of anodic oxidation can change surface characteristics and cell activity Purpose. This study was performed to evaluate MG63 cell responses such as affinity, proliferation and to compare surface characteristics of anodic oxidized titanium in various voltage. Material and method. The disks for cell culture were fabricated from grade 3 commercially pure titanium,1 m in thickness and 12 mm in diameter. Surfaces of 4 different roughness were prepared. Group 1 had a machined surface, used as control. Group 2 was anodized under 220 V, group 3 was anodized under 300 V and group 4 was anodized under 320 V. The microtopography of specimens was observed by scanning electron microscope (JSM-840A, JEOL, Japan) and atomic force microscope(Autoprobe CP, Park Scientific Instrument, USA). The surface roughness was measured by confocal laser scanning microscope(Pascal, LSM5, Zeiss, Germany). The crystal structure of the titanium surface was analyzed with x-ray diffractometer(D8 advanced, Broker, Germany). MG63 osteoblast-like cells were cultured on these specimens. The cell morpholgy was observed by field emission electron microscope(Hitachi S-4700, Japan). The cell metabolic and proliferative activity was evaluated by MTT assay Results and conclusion. With in limitations of this in vitro study, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see pores which did not show in control group. In higher anodizing voltage, pore size was increased. 2. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see anatase. In higher anodizing voltage, thicker oxide layer increased crystallinity(anatase, anatase and rutile mixed). 3. MG63 cells showed more irregular, polarized and polygonal shape and developed more lamellipodi in anodizing group as voltage increased. 4. The activity of cells in MTT assay increased significantly in group 3 and 4 in comparison with group 1 and 2. However, there was no difference between group 3 and 4 at P<0.05. Proliferation of MG63 cells increased significantly in pore size($3-5.5{\mu}m$) of group 3 and 4 in comparison with in pore size($0.2-1{\mu}m$ ) of group 2.
