  • In this paper, propose an efficient arc detection and control method to achieve fast machining speed, improved precision and surface roughness in discharge machining, especially for carbide and hard material processing and metal processing using discharge phenomenon as energy. A single discharge waveform is divided into three sections of Td (Time-Delay), Ton (Time-on) and Toff (Time-off) and the gate control timing is simulated using the HDL language. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the gap between the electrode and the workpiece on the machining results by determining the operation of the servo mechanism by sampling the Td section through the comparator circuit. As a result of the analysis, the Td section of the formed waveform was more precisely sampled at a high speed and the results were improved when applied to the gap control between the electrode and the workpiece.

  • Recurrent event data occurs when a subject experiences same type of event repeatedly and is found in various areas such as the social sciences, Economics, medicine and public health. To analyze recurrent event data either a total time or a gap time is adopted according to research interest. In this paper, we analyze recurrent event data with incomplete observation gap using a gap time scale. That is, some subjects leave temporarily from a study and return after a while. But it is not available when the observation gaps terminate. We adopt an interval censoring mechanism for estimating the termination time. Furthermore, to model the association among gap times of a subject, a frailty effect is incorporated into a model. Programs included in Survival package of R program are implemented to estimate the covariate effect as well as the variance of frailty effect. YTOP (Young Traffic Offenders Program) data is analyzed with both proportional hazard model and a weibull regression model.

  • Phononic system composed of periodical elastic structures exhibit band gap phenomenon, and all elastic wave cannot propagate within the band gap. In this article, we consider one-dimensional binary materials which are periodically arranged as a 20-layered medium instead of infinite layered system for phononic system. The layered medium with finite dimension is subjected to a uniformly distributed sinusoidal loading at the upper surface, and the bottom surface is assumed to be traction free. The transient wave propagation in the 20-layered medium is analyzed by Laplace transform technique. The analytical solutions are presented in the transform domain and the numerical Laplace inversion (Durbin's formula) is performed to obtain the transient response in time domain. The numerical results show that when a sinusoidal loading with a specific frequency within band gap is applied, stress response will be significantly decayed if the receiver is away from the source. However, when a sinusoidal force with frequency is out of band gap, the attenuation of the stress response is not obvious as that in the band gap.

  • The major flow-induced vibration mechanisms such as fluid-elastic and turbulence excitation can cause the various types of wear of the steam generator tubes in unclear power plant. It is generally accepted that the tube wear due to vibration is affected by the presence of gap clearance between tube and support plate. Connors showed that the tube wear depth could be estimated by using the relationship between wear volume and sliding distance for contact time. Au-Yang predicted the wear depth by using the nonlinear characteristics of normal work rate to contact time. In this study the effect of gap size on the steam generator tubes wear is analyzed by deriving the wear depth versus normal work rate relationship from these previous results.

  • The objective of levitation control design is to stabilize a levitation system, or obtain certain transient response, bandwidth, and steady state error. An air gap signal from the each corner is important parameter to design levitation controller. A levitation controller using gap signals with measurement delay time can not make a expected performance. In this paper, a new air gap estimator to improve the performance of levitation controller is proposed. The estimated gap signal which has little measurement delay time is used as a feedback value in the levitation controller.

  • This study introduces a method for computation of process and operation gap in the specific construction operation(i.e., RC frame construction applying a block-grouping scheme) using CYCLONE-based simulation modeling and analysis technique. Since uncertainty of construction environment exists, a thoughtful production planning is required to effectively deal with a risk resulting in schedule delay in advance. This study presents the concepts of a time delay occurred in a process level and operation level in a operation model, and a method of measuring gap-times in each level while the simulation progresses. It helps a site manager to decide how many segmentation in a construction block is suitable for eliminating unproductive time-delays under the constrained resources (e.g., laborer, equipment). A case study presents a network model representing a three segmented RC frame work, and result obtained from the simulation experiment.

  • To study the relationship between spark ignition and the gap in the nano-scale region, the electric potential was applied to between a Pt-Ir tip and a gold substrate. The tip was sharpened by electro-chemical etching process in the solution of $CaCl_2;H_2O$ and acetone. The radius of tip was measured to be around 200nm and attached to the scanning probe microscope to control the gap between the tip and the substrate. The electric potential of 10V to 80V was applied to initialize the spark. The gaps and the current profile were measured to analyze the characteristics of spark ignition. A spark sustaining time was measured to be between 50ns and 200ns depending on the applied electric potential and the gap between the electrodes. The continuous electric discharge was successfully sustained up to 1 second of spark or arc time. The developed process can be applicable to the micro-scale fabrication of automotive sensors as a similar concept of GTAW.

  • Buildability of fresh concrete, a key element of Concrete 3D printing, is the ability to build filaments at a desirable height without excessive deformation or collapse. Buildability is closely related to yield stress, and the higher the yield stress, the better. Also, the shear stress of fresh concrete increases as it hardens over the time after extruded, and consequently the buildability increases. Therefore, in concrete 3D printing, proper time gaps between printed layers (Printing Time Gap, PTG) are required to ensure the buildability of fresh concrete. As the PTG increases, the buildability increases; however, an excessive PTG reduces the bond performance between the printed layers, and the extrudability can be lowered as the printing time increases. In this research, therefore, 3D printing experiments were conducted with the variable of PTG to examine the buildability of 100 MPa-high strength concrete. In addition, a pseudo-layer loading method was applied to simulate the buildability test for 3D concrete printing and its applicability was examined.

  • In a previous work we reported the bistable property by doping a chiral material in a splay cell. The bistable states are the splay state and the metastable 180$^{\circ}$twist state. The retention time of the metastable state can be changed by the variation of d/p (cell gap over pitch), cell gap, pretilt angle, azimuthal anchoring force, liquid crystal material, and so on. In this paper we will present uniform bend transition and twist retention time improvement in a multi-domain BCSN LC cell by using the multi cell gap method.

  • Subjects can experience two types of recurrent events in a longitudinal study. In addition, there may exist intermittent dropouts that results in repeated observation gaps during which no recurrent events are observed. Therefore, theses periods are regarded as non-risk status. In this paper, we consider a special case where information on the observation gap is incomplete, that is, the termination time of observation gap is not available while the starting time is known. For a statistical inference, incomplete termination time is incorporated in terms of interval-censored data and estimated with two approaches. A shared frailty effect is also employed for the association between two recurrent events. An EM algorithm is applied to recover unknown termination times as well as frailty effect. We apply the suggested method to young drivers' convictions data with several suspensions.
