  • Time-dependent frequency and energy of free vibration of the Spagetti problem, that is the axially moving continuum with time-varying length, are investigated. Exact expressions for the natural frequency and time-varying vibration energy are derived by dealing with traveling waves. When the string length is increased, the vibration period increases, but the free vibration energy varies as a function of both translating velocity and boundary velocity of the continuum. However, when the string undergoes retraction, the vibration energy increases with time, String tension together with non-zero instantaneous velocity at the moving boundary results in energy variation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new rubust design scheme of a variable structure type model reference control (VS-MRC) which can be applied to linear time-varing plants. Our idea is started from the hypothesis that the plant consists of two parts, i.e., one has time-invariant parameters and the other has time-varying parameters. We consider the former the nominal part of the plant and the latter a kind of disturbance to the nominal one. In this design scheme, the ordinary VS-MRC is adopted to the nominal part and the signum function is introduced to eliminate the influence of the disturbance.

  • The stability robustness problem of linear discrete-time systems with time-varying perturbations is considered. By using Lyapunov direct method, the perturbation bounds for guaranteeing the quadratic stability of the uncertain systems are derived. In the previous results, the perturbation bounds are derived by the quadratic equation stemmed from Lyapunov method. In this paper, the bounds are obtained by a numerical optimization technique. Linear matrix inequalities are proposed to compute the perturbation bounds. It is demonstrated that the suggested bound is less conservative for the uncertain systems with unstructured perturbations and seems to be maximal in many examples. Furthermore, the suggested bound is shown to be maximal for the special classes of structured perturbations.

  • This paper presents a comparison of the black-box and the physics based derived gray-box models for subspace identification for structures subjected to support-excitation. The study compares the damage detection capabilities of both these methods for linear time invariant (LTI) systems as well as linear time-varying (LTV) systems by extending the gray-box model for time-varying systems using short-time windows. The numerically simulated IASC-ASCE Phase-I benchmark building has been used to compare the two methods for different damage scenarios. The efficacy of the two methods for the identification of stiffness parameters has been studied in the presence of different levels of sensor noise to simulate on-field conditions. The proposed extension of the gray-box model for LTV systems has been shown to outperform the black-box model in capturing the variation in stiffness parameters for the benchmark building.

  • This paper investigates the problem of robust H$_{\infty}$ filter with FIR(Finite Impulse Response) structure for linear continuous time-varying systems with sampled-data measurements. It is assumed that the system is subject to real time-varying uncertainty which is represented by the state-space model having parameter uncertainty. The robust H$_{\infty}$ FIR filter is proposed for the continuous-time linear parameter uncertain systems. It is also derived from the equivalence relationship between the robust linear H$_{\infty}$ FIR filter and the robust linear H$_{\infty}$ filter with sampled-data measurements.

  • The organic yields (i.e. fraction of nuclear events resulting in organic compound formation) of the radioative neutron capture reactions of halogens in purified bromobenzene have been determined varying extraction time, at $100^{\circ}C$ for thermal effect, varying irradiation time, varying neutron flux and with additional U. V. irradiation. Among the important results are; (1) The organic yields show no remarkable fluctuations with time following neutron irradiation; (2) The organic yields show no change with thermal energy; (3) The organic yields of degassed samples are same in different length of irradiation time whereas the yields of the samples in open air appear to increase with increasing time of irradiation (4) The organic yields increase remarkably with increased neutron flux; (5) The organic yields show a sharp increase by additional U. V. irradiation after neutron irradiation.

  • The failure prediction and preventive maintenance for the equipment of nuclear power plant area using reliability-centered maintenance have been grown. On the other hand, the maintenance for power distribution system consists of time-based maintenance mainly. In this paper, the new maintenance algorithms for power distribution system are developed considering reliability indices. First of all, Time-varying failure rates are extracted from data accumulated at KEPCO using exponential distribution function and weibull distribution function. Next, based on the extracted failure rate, reliability for real power distribution system is evaluated for applying the effective maintenance algorithm which is the analytic method deciding the maintenance point of time and searching the feeder affecting the specific customer. Also the algorithm deciding the maintenance priority order are presented based on sensitivity analysis and equipment investment plan are analyzed through the presented algorithm at real power distribution system.

  • Development of an artificial reverberation algorithm with low memory requirements has been an issue of importance in applications such as mobile multimedia devices. One possible solution to this problem is to embed a time-varying all-pass filter to the feedback loop of the comb filter. In this paper, theoretical and perceptual analyses of reverberators embedding time-varying all-pass filters are presented. The analyses are to iud a perceptually acceptable degree of phase variation by the all-pass filter. Based on the analyses, we propose a new methodology of designing reverberators embedding time-varying all-pass filters. Through the subjective tests, we showed that, even with smaller memory, the proposed method is capable of providing perceptually comparable sound quality to the conventional methods involving time-invariant parameters.

  • In this paper, the estimation method for the power signal harmonics is proposed by using the time-varying optimal finite impulse response (FIR) filter. To estimate the magnitude and phase-angle of the harmonic components, the time-varying optimal FIR filter is designed for the state space representation of the noisy power signal which the magnitude and phase is considered as a stochastic process. Since the time-varying optimal FIR filter used in the proposed method does not use any priori information of the initial condition and has FIR structure, the proposed method could overcome the demerits of Kalman filter based method such as poor estimation and divergence problem. Due to the FIR structure, the proposed method is more robust against to the model uncertainty than the Kalman filter. Moreover, the proposed method gives more general solution than the time-invariant optimal FIR filter based harmonic estimation method. To verify the performance and robustness of the proposed method, the proposed method is compared with time-varying Kalman filter based method through simulation.

  • Time-frequency representations are methods to display the magnitude or energy density of a signal on the two dimensional plane of both time and frequency. They are useful in analyzing the characteristics of time-varying signals. Music is a typical time-varying signal, and it can be analyzed by time-frequency representations. Recently, it is popular to change the sound quality by attaching a safety sounder to an instrument. It is performed to improve perception subjectively by spending little cost and modifying sound quality. In time domain, it is difficult to notify the difference between music signals with and without the sounder. But, it is easy to find the difference in frequency domain or in time-frequency domain. In this paper, the music signal from a flute with sounder is analyzed both in the frequency domain and in the time-frequency domain. It is confirmed that the frequency components in the mid-frequency range of 500~2500 are reinforced.
