  • The ability of time reversal techniques to focus ultrasonic beams on the source location is important in many aspects of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. In this paper, we investigate the time reversal beam focusing of ultrasonic array sensors on a defect in layered media. Numerical modeling is performed using the commercially available software which employs a time domain finite difference method. Two different time reversal approaches are considered - the through transmission and the pulse-echo. Linear array sensors composed of N elements of line sources are used for signal reception/excitation, time reversal, and reemission in time reversal processes associated with the scattering source of a side-drilled hole located in the second layer of two layer structure. The simulation results demonstrate the time reversal focusing even with multiple reflections from the interface of layered structure. We examine the focusing resolution that is related to the propagation distance, the size of array sensor and the wavelength.

  • A 3-dimensional compressible turbulent boundary layer solver has been developed. A time marching method is used to integrate the turbulent boundary layer equations. While the direct integration of the boundary layer equations is performed for unseparated flow regions, the inverse integration is performed for separated flow regions. The program is verified for flows that have analytical solutions or other numerical results. The solver will be merged with an Euler solver for viscous-inviscid interaction.

  • Study of the wave structure and shear layer in the vicinity of a wall mounted cavity is done by time averaged colour schlieren and time resolved instantaneous shadowgraph technique in an M=1.7 flowfield. Effect of change of cavity width on flow structure is investigated by using constant length to depth (L/D) ratio cavity models with varying length to width (L/W) ratio of 0.83 to 4. The time averaged shock wave structure was observed to change with change in cavity width. Dependence of the shock angle at the leading edge on the shear layer width is also evident from the images obtained. Unsteadiness in the flow field in terms of shear layer dynamics and quasi steady nature of shock waves was evident from the images obtained during instantaneous shadowgraph experiments. Apart from the leading and trailing edge shocks, several other waves and flow features were observed. These flow features and the associated physical phenomena are discussed in details and presented in the paper.

  • The conditions for the formation of low temperature sulfurized layer and wear characteristics are as follows ; 1. Salt bath KSCN 98%∼K2S 2% showed porous sulfurized layer. 2. Sulfurized layer thickness at 200$^{\circ}C$ and 30minutes time was about 10$\mu\textrm{m}$. 3. Sulfurized layer thickness increased with time.

  • As the etching time is varied, the change of thickness of the porous silicon layers was successfully investigated. The thickness of the PSi layer as a function of anodization time for a p-type substrate that is etched at a constant current density of 50 $mA/cm^2$ in a 35% hydrofluoric acid solution shows a linear relationship between the etching time and the thickness of the PSi layer.

  • In this experiment, nitriding treatment has been performed at $400^{\circ}C$ with various $N_2$ content and with changing processing time on AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel to investigate the expanded martensite layer (${\alpha}^{\prime}_N$ layer) formation behavior. Nitriding was implemented with changing $N_2$ content from 10% to 25% for 15 hrs and processing time was changed from 4hr to 15hr at 25% $N_2$ content. After treatment, the behavior of the ${\alpha}^{\prime}_N$ layer was investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness testing. Potentiodynamic polarization test was also used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. It was found that the surface hardness and ${\alpha}^{\prime}_N$ layer thickness increases with increasing $N_2$ percentage and processing time. Although their corrosion behaviors are worse than the bare sample.

  • We investigate the phase formation in the compound layer of cast irons during the gaseous nitrocarburising of four different cast irons, that contain different types of graphites in the shape and size. We examine the change in the surface roughness with the nitrocarburising time. The observation of cross-sectional microstructure and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the compound layer consists of single ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ phase and that its thickness increases in a parabolic manner with the treatment time. The surface roughness parameters, Rz and Ra increase with increasing treatment time. In other words, the roughness parameters increase as the thickness of compound layer increases. The parameters also depend on the shape and size of graphite in the individual cast irons.

  • The multilayer expanson of single layer NN (Neural Network) was needed to solve the linear seperability problem as shown by the classic example using the XOR function. The EBP (Error Back Propagation ) learning rule is often used in multilayer Neural Networks, but it is not without its faults: 1)D.Rimmelhart expanded the Delta Rule but there is a problem in obtaining Ca from the linear combination of the Weight matrix N between the hidden layer and the output layer and H, wich is the result of another linear combination between the input pattern and the Weight matrix M between the input layer and the hidden layer. 2) Even if using the difference between Ca and Da to adjust the values of the Weight matrix N between the hidden layer and the output layer may be valid is correct, but using the same value to adjust the Weight matrixd M between the input layer and the hidden layer is wrong. Recognitron III was proposed to solve these faults. According to simulation results, since Recognitron III does not learn the three layer NN itself, but divides it into several single layer NNs and learns these with learning patterns, the learning time is 32.5 to 72.2 time faster than EBP NN one. The number of patterns learned in a EBP NN with n input and output cells and n+1 hidden cells are 2**n, but n in Recognitron III of the same size. [5] In the case of pattern generalization, however, EBP NN is less than Recognitron III.

  • Ergezinger's method, one of the layer-by-layer algorithms used for multilyer perceptrons, consists of an output node and can make premature saturations in the output's weight because of using linear least squared method in the output layer. These saturations are obstacles to learning time and covergence. Therefore, this paper expands Ergezinger's method to be able to use an output vector instead of an output node and introduces a learning rate to improve learning time and convergence. The learning rate is a variable rate that reflects the correlation coefficient between new weight and previous weight while updating hidden's weight. To compare the proposed method with Ergezinger's method, we tested iris recognition and nonlinear approximation. It was found that the proposed method showed better results than Ergezinger's method in learning convergence. In the CPU time considering correlation coefficient computation, the proposed method saved about 35% time than the previous method.
