  • The ideal thrust function is used to determine the local thrust of supersonic combustor. Method of thrust determination from measured pressures are applied to the Mach 2.5 model supersonic combustor. In this application, measured pressures from the experiments in the University of Michigan are used to determine the local thrust of supersonic combustor. Marginal results of local thrust are obtained and discussed. Combustion and wedge affect thrust distributions in the upstream region significantly. The thrust determination from pressure measurements can be a simple, feasible and applicable method, especially when thrust stand is not available.

  • The determination of thrust is essential in design and evaluation of a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion device. Conventional methods to determine the thrust is using thrust stand or force measurement system. However, these conventional methos are not applicable to the case where thrusts stands are impractical, such as free jet testing of engines, and model combustor. For this reason, the thrust determination method from measured pitot pressure is considered and validated. Validation of thrust determination from pitot pressures can be achieved by comparing the actual thrust from thrust stand. For validation purpose, a small-scale supersonic wind tunnel is installed on the thrust stand. Thrusts are measured while pressures are measured simulaneously. Then, the thrust from pitot pressure measurements are compared with the measured thrust and theoretical thrusts.

  • The determination of thrust is very important in hypersonic air-breathing propulsion design and evaluation. Because of the short flow-residence time in the combustor, the evaluation of engine performance is strongly influenced upon the engine thrust. Conventional methods to determine the thrust is using thrust stand or force measurement system. However, these methods cannot be applied to the case where thrust stands are impractical, such as free jet testing of engines, and model combustor. With this reason, the thrust determination method from measured pilot pressure is considered and evaluated.

  • In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.

  • Using backup plate is one of the most commonly used methods to decrease drilling-induced delamination of composite laminates. It has been shown that, the size of the delamination zone is related to the vertical element of cutting force named as thrust force. Also, direct control of thrust force is not a routine task, because, it depends on both drilling parameters and mechanical properties of the composite laminate. In this research, critical feed rate and thrust force are predicted analytically for delamination initiation in drilling of composite laminates with backup plate. Three common theories, linear elastic fracture mechanics, classical laminated plate and mechanics of oblique cutting, are used to model the problem. Based on the proposed analytical model, the effect of drill radius, chisel edge size, and backup plate size on the critical thrust force and feed rate are investigated. Experimental tests were carried out to prove analytical model.

  • This paper deals with determination of parameters of permanent magnet linear synchronous machine(PMLSM) for high thrust and improvement of speed performance. To satisfy these characteristics, PMLSM with double-sided PM mover and slotless ring-winding stator is presented. And using multilaver method, this paper analyzes the electromagnetic field phenomena and estimates parameters such as back-EMF and thrust constant. These parameters are used to derive DC link voltage of voltage source inverter with space vector pulse width modulation(SVPWM) using a digital signal processor and encoder pulse signal. The DC link voltage is one of the most important factor for accurate design. It enables to determinate dynamic operating range of system. Hence, performance evaluation is performed through dynamic modeling. Finally, in this paper, dynamic characteristics according to DC link voltage are presented as experiment result.

  • This work presents fuel-optimal altitude maintenance of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) spacecrafts experiencing non-negligible air drag and J2 perturbation. A pseudospectral (direct) method is first applied to roughly estimate an optimal fuel consumption strategy, which is employed as an initial guess to precisely determine itself. Based on the physical specifications of KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2), a Korean artificial satellite, numerical simulations show that a satellite ascends with full thrust at the early stage of the maneuver period and then descends with null thrust. While the thrust profile is presumably bang-off, it is difficult to precisely determine the switching time by using a pseudospectral method only. This is expected, since the optimal switching epoch does not coincide with one of the collocation points prescribed by the pseudospectral method, in general. As an attempt to precisely determine the switching time and the associated optimal thrust history, a shooting (indirect) method is then employed with the initial guess being obtained through the pseudospectral method. This hybrid process allows the determination of the optimal fuel consumption for LEO spacecrafts and their thrust profiles efficiently and precisely.

  • This paper proposes a method to calculate the stiffness and the damping coefficients of the coupled journal and thrust bearings. The Reynolds equations and their perturbation equations are transformed to the finite element equations by considering the continuity of pressure and flow at the interface between bearings. The Reynolds boundary condition is used in the numerical analysis to simulate the cavitation phenomena. The dynamic coefficients of the proposed method are compared with those of the numerical differentiation of the loads with respect to finite displacements and velocities of bearing center. It shows that the proposed method is more accurate and efficient than the differentiation method.

  • This paper presents a virtual instrumentation(VI) system for LIMs performance on-line monitoring. The VI is designed using the graphical programming language LabVIEW and is capable of performing on-line measurement functions, including data acquisition, display, and analyses in the time and frequency domains, as well as data archiving. To monitor in real time the steady-state and transient electromagnetic thrust of LIMs, the search coil is used for the determination of the flux linkage components, which is then multiplied by the appropriate current components to yield a signal proportional to the electromagnetic thrust. This paper reports the LIM's dynamics measured by the proposed on-line monitoring system.
