This study describes the numerical simulation of three-dimensional droplet formation and the following motion in a cross-junction microchannel by using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Our aim is to develop the three-dimensional binary fluids model, consisting of two sets of distribution functions to represent the total fluid density and the density difference, which introduces the repulsive interaction consistent with a free-energy function between two fluids. We validated the LBM code with the velocity profile in a 3-dimensional rectangular channel. Then, we applied our code to the numerical simulation of a binary fluid flow in a cross-junction channel focusing on the investigation of the droplet formulation. Due to the pressure and interfacial-tension effect, one component of the fluids which is injected from one inlet is cut off into many droplets periodically by the other component which is injected from the other inlets. We considered the effect of the boundary conditions for density difference (order parameter) on the wetting of the droplet to the side walls.

With continued miniaturization and development of new devices, the highly nonuniform oxidation of three-dimensional non-planar silicon structures plays an increasingly important role. In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element numerical simulator. Grwoth of oxide is a coupled process of diffusion of oxidant and deformation of oxide. Because boundaries of oxide are moved in each time step and LOCOS structure is formed three-dimensional shape of sruface, it is necessary to develope an efficient node control algorithm that can locally generate and eliminate the node. Therefore we have developed the optimized three-dimensional mesh generator which is cpable of refining and eliminating the meshes at the moving boundary of oxide, and hve developed three-dimensional finite element oxidation solver.

This paper presents a three-dimensional numerical simulation for thermal oxidation process. A new elasto-viscoplastic model for robust numerical oxidation simulation is proposed. The three-dimensional effects of oxidation process such as mask lifting effect and corner effects are analyzed. In nano-scale process, the oxidant diffusion is punched through to the other side of the mask. The mask is lifted so the thickness of oxide region is greatly enhanced. The compressive pressure during the oxidation is largest in the mask corner of the island structure. This is because the masked area near the corner is surrounded by an area larger than the others in the island structure. This stress induces the retardation of the oxide growth, especially at the masked corner in the island structure.
Numerical simulation is made of the three-dimensional wave breaking motion about a part of a floating offshore structure containing a circular cylinder mounted vertically onto a lower hull in regular periodic gravity wave generated by a numerical wave maker. TUMMAC-VIII finite-difference method is newly developed for such a problem. By use of density-function technique the three-dimensional wave breaking motion is approximately implenented in the framework of rectangular grid system. A porosity technique is devised for the implementation of the no-slip bydy boundary conditions. The generation of breaking waves by the interaction of incident waves with the structure is well simulated and interesting features of breaking waves are revealed with containing degree of quantitative and qualitative accuracy.
Three-dimensional flow analysis was performed by using the control volume finite-element method for design of a profile extrusion die. Because polymer melt behavior is complicated and cross-sectional shape of the profile extrusion die is changing continuously, the fluid flow within the die must be analyzed three-dimensionally. A commercially available polypropylene is used for theoretical and experimental investigations. Material properties are assumed to be constant except for the viscosity. The 5-constant modified Cross model is used for the numerical analysis. A test problem is examined in order to verify the accuracy of the numerical method. Simulations are performed for conditions of three different screw speeds and three different die temperatures. Predicted pressure distribution is compared with the experimental measurements and the results of the previous two-dimensional study. The computational results obtained by using three dimensional CVFEM agree with the experimental measurements and are more accurate than those obtained by using the two-dimensional cross-sectional method. The velocity profiles and the temperature distributions within several cross-sections of the die are given as contour plots.
To circumvent the constraints of time-consuming experimental methods, numerical simulation can be one of the most effective approaches to investigating chloride diffusion behaviors in concrete. However, except for the effect of the external environments, the transport direction of the chloride cannot be neglected when the concrete is exposed to the marine tidal zone, especially in certain areas of concrete members. In this study, based on Fick's second law, considering the effects of timevarying, chloride binding capacity, concrete stress state, ambient temperature, and relative humidity on chloride diffusion coefficient, the modified one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional novel modified chloride diffusion theoretical models were established through defining the current boundary conditions. The simulated results based on the novel modified multi-dimensional model were compared with the experimental results obtained from some previous pieces of literature. The comparing results showed that the modified multi-dimensional model was well-fitted with experimental data, confirming the high accuracy of the novel modified model. The experimental results in literature showed that the chloride diffusion in the corner area of the concrete structure cannot be simulated by a simple one-dimensional diffusion model, where it is necessary to select a suitable multi-dimensional chloride diffusion model for simulation calculation. Therefore, the novel modified multi-dimensional model established in this study has a stronger applicability for practical engineering.
Preliminary design of a ground plate, a device installed close to the aircraft model for wind tunnel test to simulate the ground effect, was performed by a numerical simulation. A two-dimensional numerical study was performed initially to decide the optimal leading edge and flap configurations. Then, three-dimensional studies were conducted to decide the optimal flap deflection angle for pressure distribution reduction since the plate and the plate supporting system generate static pressure difference between the upper and lower flow regions. Three-dimensional simulation additionally studied the effect of the clearance between the plate and the wind tunnel side wall. For the efficiency of computation, half model was simulated and a symmetric boundary condition was applied on the center plane. Based on the preliminary design, a ground plate was designed, manufactured and tested at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) wind tunnel. The measured pressure differences versus flap deflection angle agreed well with the predicted results.

This study investigates the effects of human impact and precipitation on groundwater flow conditions at a small area in Dejima Upland using a transient three-dimensional simulation. To show the utility of the transient three-dimensional model, the results of the numerical model are compared with those of Theis problem for which analytical solution is available. It appears that over the time period studied, the results of the model agree well with the analytical solution. Simulation is undertaken for a period of 30days starting from May 1st, when irrigation starts. Groundwater flow patterns determined by a numerical model are presented in the form of plotted potential lines and discussed. Results of simulation clearly indicate that the groundwater flow system should be analysed using a transient three-dimensional model, especially for the region which is effected by human impact.
Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of turbulent spray combustion flow was conducted. An experimental database for the laboratory spray combustor is chosen to validate the present numerical simulation. The governing equations for the gas phases are discretized in three-dimensional curvilinear boundary-fitted coordinate system, and the fuel droplet motion equations are described in Lagrangian representation. The numerical results are compared with the experiment for the gas-phase mean velocities and its fluctuation in cold flow condition. Three dimensional vortical structures are well visualized and droplet motion is well predicted.
Three-dimensional numerical study was carried out for the investigation of the detonation wave structures propagating in tubes. Fluid dynamics equations and conservation equation of reaction progress variable were analyzed by a MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. Chemical reaction was modeled by using a simplified one-step irreversible kinetics model. The variable gas properties between unburned and burned states were considered by using variable specific heat ratio formulation. The unsteady computational results in three-dimension show the detailed mechanisms of rectangular and diagonal mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting same cell length but different cell width in smoked-foil record. The results for the small reaction constant shows the spinning mode of three-dimensional detonation wave dynamics, which was rarely observed in the previous numerical simulation of the detonation waves.
