Ginseng-plus-Bai-Hu-Tang ameliorates diet-induced obesity, hepatic steatosis, and insulin resistance in mice

  • Background: Dietary fat has been suggested to be the cause of various health issues. Obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and kidney disease are known to be associated with a high-fat diet (HFD). Obesity and associated conditions, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), are currently a worldwide health problem. Few prospective pharmaceutical therapies that directly target NAFLD are available at present. A Traditional Chinese Medicine, ginseng-plus-Bai-Hu-Tang (GBHT), is widely used by diabetic patients to control glucose level or thirst. However, whether it has therapeutic effects on fat-induced hepatic steatosis and metabolic syndrome remains unclear. Methods: This study was conducted to examine the therapeutic effect of GBHT on fat-induced obesity, hepatic steatosis, and insulin resistance in mice. Results: GBHT protected mice against HFD-induced body weight gain, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia compared with mice that were not treated. GBHT inhibited the expansion of adipose tissue and adipocyte hypertrophy. No ectopic fat deposition was found in the livers of HFD mice treated with GBHT. In addition, glucose intolerance and insulin sensitivity in HFD mice was also improved by GBHT. Conclusion: GBHT prevents changes in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in a HFD mouse model. Our findings provide evidence for the traditional use of GBHT as therapy for the management of metabolic syndrome.

Acute Toxicity Study of Modified Je-Ho-Tang in ICR Mice

  • Previous studies have shown that modified Je-Ho-Tang (MJHT) has anti-platelet effects. Je-Ho-Tang (JHT), a Korean court beverage, is a traditional Korean herbal medicine that has been used for the treatment of a disease attended by great thirst, and for prevention of illness in hot summers. We made MJHT from JHT by excluding honey. The present study was performed to determine the acute oral toxicity of crude extract of MJHT in male and female ICR mice. We investigated the in vivo single dose acute toxicity of MJHT hot-water extraction. This test was orally administered once by gavage to 20 mice of each sex received doses of 0 (control group), 1250, 2500 and 5000 mg/kg body weight. Mortalities, clinical findings, autopsy findings and body weight changes were monitored daily for 14 days following the administration. We observed survival rates, general toxicities, changes of body weight, and autopsy. No significant lethality was observed after single oral administration of MJHT at the different dosages. Autopsies on the animals revealed no gross abnormalities. Therefore, the LD50 value of MJHT for ICR mice was estimated more than 5000 mg/kg by the oral route. These results suggest that no toxic dose level of MJHT in mice is considered to be more than 5000 mg/kg. Consequently, it was concluded that MJHT have no effect on acute toxicity and side effect in ICR mice.

소갈 증상을 호소하는 제2형 당뇨 환자에서의 한양방 병행치료 치험 1례와 연속 혈당 측정기를 이용한 평가 (A Case Report of Integrative Treatment in a Type 2 Diabetes Patient with Multiple Symptoms and Evaluation Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring)

  • Introduction: We describe the effects of Sosiho-tang decoction and insulin combination therapy, as well as the effect of integrated traditional Korean medicine therapy, using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in a diabetic patient complaining of a range of diabetic symptoms. Case report: A 24-year-old female presented with symptoms of diabetes, including weight loss, thirst, and polyuria, and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes through blood tests, endocrine tests, and autoantibody tests. During hospitalization, the patient received insulin therapy and Sosiho-tang decoction concurrently, achieving normal blood glucose levels. After discharge, adhering to the Sosiho-tang decoction and CGM enabled the insulin dosage to be gradually reduced while maintaining normal blood glucose levels. Conclusion: Combination therapy with insulin and Sosiho-tang rapidly reduced hyperglycemia in the short term. CGM post-discharge allowed for observation of the patient's blood glucose levels. Ultimately, Sosiho-tang medication lowered blood glucose levels, reduced insulin requirements, and facilitated a reduction in the insulin dosage.

광주지역 일부 대학생에서 에너지음료 섭취 실태 및 섭취 관련 제요인 특성 비교 (Consumption Behaviors of Energy Drinks and Comparison of Associated Factors Among College Students in Gwangju)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the current status of consumption of energy drinks among college students and investigate the effects of general environmental factors, health behavior factors, caffeine knowledge levels, and perceived stress levels on consumption of energy drinks. Methods: A survey was conducted among a total of 479 college students in Gwangju, using self-administered questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of items about general environmental factors, health behavior, caffeine knowledge, perceived stress, and energy drink consumption behaviors. Results: 69.1% of participants experienced consumption of energy drinks, and specifically 82.8% of male students and 54.1% of female students experienced consumption of energy drinks (p<0.001). The reasons for drinking energy drinks were found to be recovery from fatigue, curiosity, taste, habit, thirst relief, and stress relief. In addition, 40.7% of participants experienced drinking energy drinks mixed with alcohol, and specifically 48.6% of male students and 27.4% of female students reported drinking energy drinks with alcohol (p<0.001). Moreover, 51.5% of participants responded that they experienced the effects of energy drinks, 31.9% reported experiencing adverse effects, and 41.1% were found to perceive the health risks. As a result of the assessment of caffeine knowledge, the participants showed a high level of knowledge of the arousal effect (77.7%) and the concentration increasing effect (70.8%) of caffeine, whereas they exhibited a low level of understanding of the health problems due to caffeine (32.6%) and adequate caffeine intake levels (24.4%). The higher levels of consumption experience of energy drinks was associated with higher body mass indexes (BMI) (p<0.01), higher academic years (p<0.01), lower levels of interest in health (p<0.05), smoking (p<0.001), alcohol consumption (p<0.05), and higher levels of perceived stress (p<0.05). Conclusions: The risk groups related to consumption of energy drinks among college students were identified as male students rather than female students, students in the third or fourth year of study associated with increased stress levels, and students with negative health behaviors. Therefore, support for diverse health and nutrition education for college students is required along with the improvement of internal and external environments of schools in order for college students to manage increased stress levels due to the schoolwork and preparation for employment and maintain positive health behaviors.

A Physiological Stimulating Factor of Water Intake during and after Dry Forage Feeding in Large-type Goats

  • When ruminants consume dry forage, they also drink large volumes of water. The objective of this study was to clarify which factor produced when feed boluses enter the rumen is mainly responsible for the marked increase in water intake in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period in large-type goats fed on dry forage for 2 h twice daily. Six large-type male esophageal- and ruminal-fistulated goats (crossbred Japanese Saanen/Nubian, aged 2 to 6 years, weighing $85.1{\pm}4.89kg$) were used in two experiments. In experiment 1, the water deprivation (WD) control and the water availability (WA) treatment were conducted to compare changes in water intake during and after dry forage feeding. In experiment 2, a normal feeding conditions (NFC) control and a feed bolus removal (FBR) treatment were carried out to investigate whether decrease in circulating plasma volume or increase in plasma osmolality is mainly responsible for the marked increase in water intake in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period. The results of experiment 1 showed that in the WA treatment, small amounts of water were consumed during the first hour of feeding while the majority of water intake was observed during the second hour of the 2 h feeding period. Therefore, the amounts of water consumed in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period accounted for 82.8% of the total water intake. The results of experiment 2 indicated that in comparison with the NFC control, decrease in plasma volume in the FBR treatment, which was indicated by increase in hematocrit and plasma total protein concentrations, was higher (p<0.05) in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period. However, plasma osmolality in the FBR treatment was lower (p<0.05) than compared to the NFC control from 30 min after the start of feeding. Therefore, thirst level in the FBR treatment was 82.7% less (p<0.01) compared with that in the NFC control upon conclusion of the 30 min drinking period. The results of the study indicate that the increased plasma osmolality in the second hour of the 2 h feeding period is the main physiological stimulating factor of water intake during and after dry forage feeding in large-type goats.

가상현실에서 표출된 라이드필름 제작 사례연구 - Warrior of the Dawn 제작사례를 중심 - (A Study on the Ride Film Appearing in Virtual Reality - the focus of Warrior of the Dawn -)

  • 가상현실은 1920년대 vehiclesimula-tion(fight simulator)을 효시로 하여 정밀한 광학적/전자기적 장치의 발달로 군사적 목적 이외의 범위로 발전하기 시작하여 realistic display 기술을 선두로 오락, 의료, 학습, 영화, 건축설계, 관광 등 다양한 분야에서 점점 일반화 되어 지고 있다. 1989년 재론 래니어에 의해 가상현실이란 용어가 고안되었고, 모든 가상 프로젝트들을 하나의 단일 항목으로 묶을 수 있게 되었지만, 그 이전에 가상현실은 연구 되어져왔고 현재에 이르게 되었으며, 불가능한 것에 대한 새로운 경험은 인간에게 가상현실의 한 부문으로써 라이드필름을 개발하게 하였다. 라이드필름(Ride Film)의 어트랙션은 기술적 요소뿐만 아니라 인간의 심리적 기반을 분석하여 그 토대로 구성되어지며, 가상현실의 궁극적인 원칙은 상호작용에 의한 몰입이다. 진정한 상호작용은 인터페이스와 입력센서 그리고 반응능력을 요구하는데, 라이드필름(Ride Film)은 전형적인 상호작용성의 요소는 아니다. 따라서 본 연구는 가상현실 기반에서 연구되어온 기술 중심적 입장 외에, 경험 중심적 정의 측면에서 사이버상의 철학자라 불리 우는 마이클 하임 교수의 7가지 기초 개념, 즉 인공현실 / 상호작용 / 몰입 / 망으로 연결된 세계 / 원격현전 /시뮬레이션 / 온몬 몰입에 근거하여 가상현실로서의 적합성을 대입 분석해 보고, 완전한 몰입을 위한 라이드필름(Ride Film)의 발전 방향과 최적화된 결론을 도출하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이런 관점에서 라이드필름(Ride Film)의 연구는 선례연구가 부족한 라이드필름(Ride Film)의 선행연구로써의 기틀과 디지털 영상을 한 차원 발전시키는데 기여할 것이라 여긴다.

급성기 뇌경색 환자에 있어 변증형별 유의한 임상지표의 분석 (Analysis of Clinical Indicators related to Pattern-Identification in Acute Cerebral Infarction Patient)

  • Object : The aim of this study was to assess the clinical indicators related to Pattern-Identification(PI) in acute cerebral infarction patients. Methods : We studied hospitalized patients within 30days after ictus, who admitted at Korean Medicine Center of Kyung-Hee University from January 2010 to October 2012.(n=290) Two Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM) physicians evaluated the patients independently and diagnosed PI. Inter-rater reliability was measured using simple percentage agreement and the Cohen's kappa(κ) coefficient. To assess the clinical indicators closely related to each PI, we analysed average score of each indicator in each group. Results : Simple percentage agreement of PI between raters was 64.83% and Cohen's kappa(κ) coefficient was 0.526(95% CI: 0.451-0.600). Inter-rater reliability level was fair to good. We analysed the clinical indicators in each group. Significant indicators for Fire-Heat Pattern(FHP) were reddened complexion and strong pulse power, and meaningful indicators for FHP were halitosis and thick tongue fur. Significant indicator for Dampness-Phlegm Pattern(DPP) was overweight and there was no meaningful indicator. Significant indicator for Yin-Deficiency Pattern(YDP) was dry tongue fur and meaningful indicator for YDP was thirst. There was no significant indicator for Qi-Deficiency Pattern(QDP) and pale complexion and faint low voice were meaningful indicators for QDP. Conclusions : This study reveals the significant and meaningful clinical indicators related to each Pattern-Identification in acute cerebral infarction patients. It will contribute to standardization of Korean Medical Diagnosis and Treatment in acute cerebral infarction patients.

포럼 참가자의 사회적 비교학습이 학습효과에 미치는 영향에 대한 실증분석: 참가자 특성을 중심으로 (An Empirical Study Upon How Social Comparative Learning of Forum Participants Affects Learning Effects with Emphasis on Participants' Characteristic)

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze how social comparative learning of forum participants affects learning effects with an emphasis on participants' characteristics. As today's society is changing at a fast pace, the desire for new knowledge and information has grown accordingly. To quench this thirst for knowledge and information, seminars, symposiums, conferences, forums, conventions, exhibitions, and more are taking place as part of knowledge sharing events across the world. Also, the increased need for knowledge and information exchange has led the development and growth of the convention industry and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events (Exhibitions)(MICE) industry. Especially, forum is a type of event which invites professionals and specialists to discuss diverse topics and share their knowledge and experience with the audience. The participants utilize it as an opportunity to get close to information providers and enjoy the pleasure of knowledge exchange. However, there have been few empirical analyses on who the participants are, why they attend forum, how they pick up and learn new information and knowledge, and what kinds of learning effects they achieve after the event. This paper is to analyze how social comparative learning of the forum's participants influences learning effects based on Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977, 1997, 1982. 2001) and Leon Festinger's Social Comparative Theory (1950, 1954). By dividing the participants into two groups, one with high level of self-efficacy and the other with low level of self-efficacy, we have examined the differences in learning effects between the two groups using them as moderating variables. This study was conducted in 'MBN Y Forum 2016,' which is one of the most representative knowledge exchange forums of South Korea. An online survey was distributed out and, 1,307(39.2%) out of the total participants of 3,338 have completed the survey. The survey included questions about whether the participants have gained positive or negative motivations by comparing themselves to the speakers (upward comparison learning) and other participants (lateral comparison learning). The results have shown the quality of messages that the speakers are presenting as knowledge providers is the most significant factor that acts on learning effects. Particularly, the participants had higher levels of self-efficacy and self-esteem than average people. They had a clear goal to learn from the speakers (upward comparison) and received positive motivations from them. In other words, no negative learning effects had been found. This presents a managerial implication that having a qualified speaker is necessary for a forum to be successful. On the other hand, the results from the comparison with the other participants (lateral comparison) were different. The participants were likely to compare themselves to the other participants through observational learning. They could compare listening attitudes, language skills, or capabilities to ask a question. The results have showed the participants received positive motivations from the lateral group but at the same time were jealous of abilities of the others. When the quality of a question by a participant is not good enough, it can have a negative influence on the participants' learning effects. The first group with high levels of self-efficacy and self-esteem had no correlation to negative learning effects from the speakers. They rather had a strong desire to learn from the speakers. On the contrary, the participants perceived the lateral group as a learning subset and competitor. The second group with low levels of self-efficacy and self-esteem saw the quasi-group as a rival. This presents that the individual learning effects can be different depending on the participants' characteristics.

중학교 가정교과서의 우유 교육 내용 분석과 중학생의 우유·유제품 섭취 실태 및 영양지식 조사 - 충남 공주시 중학생을 중심으로 - (Textbook Analysis of Middle School-Home Economics and Survey on Consumption Status and Nutritional Knowledge of Milk and Dairy Products of Middle School Students in Gongju City, Chungnam Province)

  • 본 연구는 충남 공주지역 중학교에 재학 중인 1~3학년 남녀 학생 364명을 대상으로 중학교 현행 가정교과서의 우유 교육 내용을 분석하고 우유 유제품 관련 섭취 실태, 소비행동, 인식 및 영양지식을 조사함으로써 가정교과서의 우유 내용이 우유를 바르게 섭취하도록 돕고 중학생의 우유 섭취 향상을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 실시하였다. 현재 중학교에서 적용 중인 가정교과서의 우유 교육 내용은 우유의 영양성분, 식단작성을 위한 우유 유제품 섭취 방법, 선택과 보관방법에 대한 일반적 내용이어서 청소년의 우유 유제품 소비 실태를 반영하지 못하는 것으로 파악되었다. 조사대상자에서 우유 권장수준인 하루에 2컵을 충족하는 비율은 30.5%뿐이었으며 성별에 따른 차이가 없이 전체적으로 우유 섭취량이 낮았다. 우유를 마시는 주된 이유는 '키 크게 하려고'가 가장 많았고, 그 다음으로 '갈증을 해소하려고', '맛이 있어서'가 많았으며 성별에 따른 차이가 있었다(p<0.01). 우유를 마시는 방법은 우유만 마신다는 비율이 66.8%로 높았으나 그 외에 시리얼이나, 제티 등을 섞어 마시고 있었으며 성별에 따른 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). 학교우유급식에 참여하지 않는 비율이 23.1%이었으며, 만족하는 비율은 58.9%로 높지 않았다. 유제품 중 가장 즐겨 먹는 것은 아이스크림이었고 그 다음으로 요구르트, 치즈로 나타났다. 우유 선택시 '맛', '유통기한'을 중시하였고 '영양'을 중시하는 비율은 낮았으며 성별에 따른 차이는 없었다. 우유 유제품 소비촉진을 위해 '더 엄격한 위생관리'를 원하는 비율이 가장 높았고, 이어서 '맛의 개선', '제품 종류의 다양화' 등이 높았으며 성별에 따른 차이가 있었다(p<0.05). 좋아하는 우유 용기는 종이팩이 59.3%로 높았고 그 다음이 플라스틱병, 유리병이 높았으며 성별에 따른 차이가 있었다(p<0.001). K-MILK 인증마크를 안다는 비율은 28.8%뿐으로 낮았다. 그 의미를 '국내산 우유사용'으로 알고 있는 비율이 높았으며 성별에 따른 차이는 없었다. 중학교 가정교과에서 우유 관련해 원하는 수업방법은 목장체험 등 체험학습이 가장 높았고 그 다음으로 실험실습, 강의식 등으로 나타났으며 성별에 따른 차이가 있었다(p<0.001). 우유 유제품에 대한 인식은 보통 정도이었으며 남자가 여자보다 긍정적이었다(p<0.01). 우유 유제품에 대한 영양지식은 양호한 수준이었으며 여자가 남자보다 높았다(p<0.01). 따라서 중등학교 가정교과서의 우유 교육 내용을 청소년의 소비 흐름을 고려해 구성하고 실생활 중심의 학습이 될 수 있도록 돕는 수업방법을 적용함으로써 청소년의 바른 우유 유제품 이용으로 연결되도록 지원하는 것이 필요하다고 하겠다. 또한 설문 조사 결과 우유 섭취량을 늘리는 것이 시급하였으며 이를 위해 우유 맛의 개선, 우유와 동반간식을 제공하는 다양한 상품 개발, 우유 용기 및 용량 개선, 우유 섭취에 기여도가 높은 학교우유급식의 참여 제고를 위한 독려 및 선호도 높은 우유 유제품의 병행 제공 등이 필요하다고 하겠다.

중학생의 식품 구매 행동 실태 (A Survey on Food Purchasing Behavior among Middle School Students)

  • 본 연구는 청소년의 성장과 성숙 그리고 건강에 직간접으로 영향을 미칠 수 있는 식품 구매 행동에 주목하고, 청소년의 바람직한 식품 선택 및 구매를 위한 식생활 교육 프로그램 개발에 기초가 될 자료를 마련하고자 중학생 253명을 대상으로 식품 구매 행동을 파악하고, 식품을 구매할 때 고려하는 사항, 식품 구매에 미치는 광고, 친구와 부모님의 영향을 조사하였다. 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대부분의 중학생들은 식품 관련 정보를 광고와 같은 대중매체를 통해 얻고 있었으며, 용돈에서 식품 구입비가 차지하는 비율은 $20{\sim}30%$가 가장 많았다. 중학생들은 평균 $2{\sim}3$일에 1회 정도 배고픔이나 갈증을 해소하기 위해 하교 후에 집 근처 가네 또는 편의점에서 주로 과자류와 빙과류를 구매하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 성별, 어머니의 학력, 가정의 경제수준, 용돈 금액, 용돈 수령 주기, 용돈 사용 내역 기록 실태, 학교 소재 지역에 따라 식품 구매 행동에 있어서 차이가 나타났다.(p<.05, p<.01, p<.001). 셋째, 중학생들은 식품을 구매할 때 가격(용량)이나 맛을 가장 중요하게 생각하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 식품을 구매할 때 고려하는 사항들은 성별, 부모의 학력, 그리고 용돈 액수에 따라 차이가 나타났다(p<.05, p<.01, p<.001). 다섯째, 광고, 친구, 그리고 부모님이 중학생의 식품 구매에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 중학생들은 식품 광고를 보면 구매 의욕이 생기고 같은 종류의 식품이라면 광고된 식품을 선택하고 스스로의 선택에 비교적 만족하는 편이지만 식품 광고의 내용을 전적으로 신뢰하거나 광고된 식품의 품질이 더욱 우수하고 생각하고 있지는 알았다. 여섯째, 성별, 어머니의 직업, 가정의 경제 수준, 그리고 용돈 액수에 따라 식품을 구매 할 때 광고, 친구, 부모님이 미치는 영향이 다르게 나타났다(p<.05, p<.01, p<.001). 이상의 인구 결과로 볼 때, 식품을 구매할 때 가격(용량)과 맛을 가장 중요하게 고려하고 주로 광고나 친구에 영향을 받는 청소년의 식품 구매 행동은 청소년의 성장, 성숙 및 건강에 지대한 부정적 영향을 미칠 수 있으므로 식품에 대한 올바른 지식의 습득을 토대로 건강 지향적인 합리적인 식품 선택 및 구매 능력을 신장시킬 수 있는 교육의 강화가 필요하다고 본다.
