Alkaline peroxide bleaching of (chemi) mechanical pulp is a very complicated system where various process factors affect the bleaching performance and pulp properties. Traditional on-factor-at a time method is ineffective and costly in finding the optimal bleaching conditions. In this study statistical experimental methods which include three steps. I. e. screening, response surface modeling and optimization, were used to find the conditions for maximal brightness development during one stage alkaline peroxide bleaching of TMP which had an initial brightness of 54.5% Elerpho. The TMP was pretreated with EDTA(0.5% on O. D. pulp. consistency, $30^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes) and bleached in a 2L Mark V Quantum Reactor at 750rpm, 7.5% of bleaching consistency and with 0.05% magnesium sulfate addition. The ranges of other factors studied were 1~5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D plup, 1~4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 1~4% sodium silicate on O. D pulp, reaction temperature 50~$90^{\circ}C$ and reaction time 40~180minutes. A models with good predictability was established and the maximal brightness after one stage bleaching was found to be 70% Elerpho at $50^{\circ}C$, 50 minutes 5% hydrogen peroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D. pulp 3.2~3.4% sodium hydroxide on O. D pulp and 4% silicate on O. D pulp. However further studies on other pulp properties such as strength and brightness stability shall be carried out in order to find out the optimal bleaching conditions.

Fiber characteristics and fiber distribution of thermomechanical pulp(TMP), bisulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(bisulfite CTMP), neutral sulfite chemithermomechanical pulp(neutral sulfite CTMP) from kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L., Malvaceae) cultivar Tainug-2 cultivated in the reclaimed land of Korea were examined to use effectively nonwood fibers as an alternative raw material sources for papermaking. Yields of TMP and CTMP from kenaf were lower than those of TMP from hardwoods and CTMP from softwoods and hardwoods. Bark fibers of kenaf cultivar Tainung-2 ranged 2.04 to 2.30 mm long and $18.7{\sim}19.7{\mu}m$ width. Core fibers averaged 0.63 to 0.80 mm long and $29.5{\sim}31.4{\mu}m$ wide. Coarseness of bark fiber was higher than that of core fiber, and fiber from TMP were higher than those from both bisulfite CTMP and neutral sulfite CTMP. Curl indexes of bark fibers were higher than those of core fibers. However curl indexes were not significantly affected by the pulping conditions. Short fiber distributions were higher in core fibers from TMP and CTMP and long fiber distributions were higher in bark fibers. There was no significant difference in fiber distribution of whole and core fibers obtained from TMP and CTMP, Fibers from neutral sulfite CTMP, however, exhibited a little higher long fiber distribution. Distinct difference in anatomical characteristics was found between core and bast fibers of kenaf plant. Parenchyma cell, pith parenchyma cell and vessel were observed in core fibers and bast fiber in bast sections.

Engineering plastics are used in instrument panels, interior trim, and other vehicle applications, and the thermomechanical behaviors of plastic materials are strongly influenced by many environmental factors such as temperature, sunlight, and rain. As the material properties change, the mechanical parts create unexpected noise. In this study, the dynamic mechanical property changes of plastics used in automobiles are measured to investigate the temperature effects. Viscoelastic properties such as the glass transition temperature and storage modulus and loss factor under temperature and frequency sweeps were measured. The data were compared with the original ones before aging to analyze the behavior changes. It was found that as the temperature increased, the storage modulus decreased and the loss factor increased slightly.
The electrical properties of heavily drawn bundled Cu- Nb filamentary microcomposite wires were examined and correlated with the microstructural changes caused by thermomechanical treatments. The cross sectional shape of Nb filaments in wires fabricated by bundling and drawing appear straight or slightly curved. The different shape of Nb filaments is attributed to the break- up and cylinderization of Nb filaments during the bundling process at high temperatures. The resistivity of Cu-Nb microcomposites is predominantly controlled by electron scattering at Cu-Nb interfaces. The decrease of the conductivity below the annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ is due to the increasing contribution of the scattering associated with coherency strains of needle- shaped precipitates. The slight decrease of the resistivity ratio (${\rho}_{295K}/{\rho}_{75K}$) is also due to the precipitation of Nb atoms. The increase in conductivity in Cu-Nb microcomposites at an annealing temperature of 50$0^{\circ}C$ is due to the coarsening and spheroidization of Nb filaments.
In this paper, we constructed a molecular dynamics (MD) polymer model of PMMA with 95% of conversion by using dynamic polymerization algorithm of a thermoplastic polymer based on free radical polymerization. In this algorithm, we introduced a united-atom level coarse-grained force field that combines the non-bonded terms from the TraPPE-UA force field and the bonded terms from the PCFF force field to alleviate the computation efforts. The molecular weight distribution and the average molecular weight of the polymer were calculated by investigating each chain generated from the free radical polymerization simulation. The molecular weight of the polymer was controlled by the number of initiator radicals presented in the initial state and molecular weight effect to the density, the glass transition temperature, and the mechanical properties were studied.

This work presents functionally graded coatings (FGC) of hydroxyapatite (HA) and metallic powders on Ti-6Al-4V implants using plasma spray coating method. HA has been the most frequently used coating material due to its excellent compatibility with human bones. However, because of the abrupt changes in thermomechanical properties between HA and the metallic implant across an interface, and residual stress induced on cooling from coating temperture to room temperature, debonding at the interface occurs in use sometimes. In this work, FGC of HA and Ti or Ti-alloy powders is made to mitigate the abrupt property changes at the interface and the effect of FGC on residual stress release is investigated by evaluating the mechanical bond strength between the implant and the HA coating layers. Thermal annealing is done after coating in order to crystallize the HA coating layer which tends to have amorphous structure during thermal spray coating. The effects of types and compositional ratio of metallic powders in FGC and annealing conditions on the bond strength are also evaluated by strength tests and the microstructure analysis of coating layers and interfaces. Finally, biocompatibility of the coating layers are tested under ISO 10993-5.
A series of polyimide (PI) was prepared by reacting 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) as the anhydride and bis(3-aminophenyl) sulfone (APS), bis[4-(3-aminophenoxy)-phenyl] sulfone (BAPS), 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)-hexafluoropropane (6FPD), 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)-phenyl]hexafluoropropane (6FBAPP), 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB), or 1,4-phenylenediamine (PDA) as the diamine. Residual stress behaviors were detected in-situ during thermal imidization of the polyimide precursors using a thin film stress analyzer (TFSA), and interpreted with respect to their morphology. According to the molecular orientation and packing order, the residual stress varied from 23.1 to 12.5 MPa, decreased with increasing chain rigidity. The thermal properties of the PI films were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and thermomechanical analysis (TMA). Their optical properties were measured by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis), and spectrophotometry. The properties of PI films were found to be strongly dependent upon the morphological structure. However, trade-offs between residual stress and optical properties were identified.
Crosslinked polyimides (PIs) were synthesized by reacting 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFDB) with various ratios of the cross-linkable, end-capping agent cis-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (CDBA) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Residual stress behaviors were investigated in-situ during thermal imidization of the crosslinked PI precursors using a thin film stress analyzer (TFSA) by wafer bending method. The thermal properties were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The optical properties were measured by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV-vis) and spectrophotometry. All properties were interpreted with respect to their morphology of crosslinked networks. With increasing the amounts of the end-capping agent, the residual stress decreased from 27.9 to -1.3 MPa, exhibited ultra-low stress and high thermal properties. The minimized residual stress and enhanced thermal properties of the crosslinked PI makes them potential candidates for versatile high-density multi-layer structure applications.

Induction hardening has been used to improve the torsional strength and characteristics of wear for axle shaft that is used to transmit driving torque from the differential to the wheel in automobiles. After the rapid heating and cooling processes of induction hardening are carried out, the shaft has residual stress and material properties change; this affects the allowable transmitted torque. The objective of this study is to predict the distribution of residual stress and estimate the torsional strength of induction-hardened axle shafts with residual stress. In this study, the finite element method is used to study the thermomechanical behavior of the material, and the results are compared with experimental results. The results indicate that the torsional strength of the axle shaft depends on the surface hardening depth and distribution of residual stress.
Ti-Ni alloys are widely used in numerous biomedical applications (e.g., orthodontics, cardiovascular science, orthopaedics) due to their distinctive thermomechanical and mechanical properties, such as the shape memory effect, superelasticity and low elastic modulus. In order to increase the biocompatibility of Ti-Ni alloys, many surface modification techniques, such as the sol-gel technique, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII), laser surface melting, plasma spraying, and chemical vapor deposition, have been employed. In this study, a Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy was electrochemically etched in 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF electrolytes to modify the surface morphology. The morphology, element distribution, crystal structure, roughness and energy of the surface were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle analysis. Micro-sized pores were formed on the Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy surface by electrochemical etching with 1M $H_2SO_4$+ X (1.5, 2.0, 2.5) wt% HF. The volume fractions of the pores were increased by increasing the concentration of the HF electrolytes. Depending on the HF concentration, different pore sizes, heights, surface roughness levels, and surface energy levels were obtained. To investigate the osteoblast adhesion of the electrochemically etched Ti-49.5Ni (at%) alloy, a MTT test was performed. The degree of osteoblast adhesion was increased at a high concentration of HF-treated surface structures.
