  • The damage of concrete due to the expansion of alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) and thermal-chemical reactions affecting the strength of concrete is studied. The empirical equations for the variations of expansion of AAR, compressive strength and degradation of the modulus of elasticity with time, and compressive strength with degradation of the modulus of elasticity are proposed by analysing numerous experimental data. It is revealed that the expansion of AAR and compressive strength increase with time. The proposed combination of the time variations of chemical and mechanical parameters provides a satisfactory prediction of the concrete strength. Seismic analysis of the aged Koyna dam is conceded for two different long-term experimental data of concrete incorporating the proposed AAR based properties. The responses of aged Koyna dam reveal that the crest displacement of the Koyna dam significantly increases with time while the contour plots show that major principal stress at neck level reduces with time. As the modulus of elasticity decreases with ages the stress generated in the concrete structure get reduces. On the other hand with lesser value of modulus of elasticity the structure becomes more flexible and the crest displacement becomes very high that cause the seismic safety of the dam reduce.

  • Among the various factors influencing the service life of the electric equipment, the performance of dielectric insulation materials has an important role to determine their whole service life. In order to determine the degradation of insulating materials immersed in extremely low temperature media such as liquid nitrogen, the abrupt temperature change from cryogenic to normal room temperature should be considered. But the assessments of low-temperature aging test method for the dielectric materials immersed in liquid nitrogen considering these conditions were not fully reported. Therefore, for the fundamental step to establish the suitable degradation test methods for cryogenic dielectric materials, we focused on the evaluation of ageing test methods for dielectric materials exposed to low temperature environments considering thermal shock by cool-down and warm up test.

  • Rubber hoses for automobile radiators are apt to be degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under thermal and mechanical loadings. The aging behaviors of the skin part of the hoses due to thermo-oxidative and electro-chemical stresses were experimentally analyzed. Through the thermo-oxidative aging test, it was shown that the surface hardness IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees) of the rubber increased with a considerable reduction of failure strain as the aging time and temperature increased. On account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin part influenced by the electro-chemical degradation(ECD) test the weight of the rubber hose increased, whereas their failure strain and IRHD hardness decreased. The hardness of the hose in the side of the negative pole was the most deteriorated at the test site of the hose skin just below the coolant surface.

  • Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is a process extruding and stacking materials. PLA materials are one of the most frequently used materials for FFF method of 3D printing. Polylactic acid (PLA)-based materials are among the most widely used materials for FFF-based three-dimensional (3D) printing. PLA is an eco-friendly material made using starch extracted from corn, as opposed to plastic made using conventional petroleum resin; PLA-based materials are used in various fields, such as packaging, aerospace, and medicines. However, it is important to analyze the mechanical properties of theses materials, such as elastic strength, before using them as structural materials. In this study, the reliability of PLA-based materials is assessed through an analysis of the changes in the linear elasticity of these materials under thermal degradation by applying a hyperelastic analytical model.

  • REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes with superior mechanical and electromechanical properties are preferable in applications such as superconducting coils and magnets. The CC tapes should withstand factors that can affect their performance during fabrication and operation of its applications. In coil applications, CC tapes experience different mechanical constraints such as tensile or compressive stresses. Recently, the critical current ($I_c$) degradation of CC tapes used in coil applications due to delamination were already reported. Thermal cycling, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch among constituent layers, screening current, etc. can induce excessive transverse tensile stresses that might lead to the degradation of $I_c$ in the CC tapes. Also, CC tapes might be subjected to very high magnetic fields that induce strong Lorentz force which possibly affects its performance in coil applications. Hence, investigation on the delamination mechanism of the CC tapes is very important in coiling, cooling, operation and design of prospect applications. In this study, the electromechanical properties of REBCO CC tapes fabricated by reactive co-evaporation by deposition and reaction (RCE-DR) under transversely applied loading were investigated. Delamination strength of the CC tape was determined using the anvil test. The $I_c$ degraded earlier under transverse tensile stress as compared to that under compressive one.

  • The solder is any of various fusible alloys, usually tin and lead, used to join metallic parts that provide the contact between the chip package and the printed circuit board. Solder plays an important role of electrical signals to communicate between the two components. In this study, two kinds of Ag-free solder as sample is made to conduct the thermal shock test and the high humidity temperature test. Low resistance is measured to estimate crack size of solder, using daisy chain. The low speed shear test is also performed to analyze strength of solder. The appropriate degradation model is estimated using the result data. Depending on the composition of solder, lifetime estimation is conducted by adopted degradation model. The lifetime estimated two kinds of Ag-free solder is compared with expected lifetime of Sn-Ag-Cu solder. The result is that both Ag-free composition are more reliable than Sn-Ag-Cu solder.

  • Evaluating service lives of rubber materials at certain temperatures requires a destructive method (typically using elongation at break). In this study, a non-destructive method based on hardness change rate was proposed for evaluating the service life of chloroprene rubber (CR). Compared to the destructive method, this non-destructive method ensures homogeneity of CR specimens and requires a small number of samples. Thermal accelerated degradation test was conducted on the CR specimens at 55, 70, 85, 100, and 125℃, and the tensile strength, elongation at break, and hardness were measured. The results of the experiment were compared to those of the accelerated life evaluation method proposed in this study. Comparing the analyzed lives in the high temperature region (70, 85, 100, and 125℃), the difference between the service lives for the destructive method (using the elongation at break) and non-destructive method (using the hardness) was approximately 0.1 year. Therefore, it was confirmed that the proposed non-destructive evaluation method based on hardness changes can evaluate the actual life of CR under thermally accelerated degradation conditions.

  • In this study, the thermal degradation behavior of biomass during torrefaction was studied by thermogravimetric and byproduct gas analysis. Torrefaction temperature, time, and heating rate were $220{\sim}300^{\circ}C$, 110 min, and $10{\sim}30^{\circ}C/min$, respectively. The degradation rate of yellow poplar was 8.01~8.81% at $220^{\circ}C$ and 71.86~77.38% at $300^{\circ}C$ depending on heating rate. The degradation rate significantly increased at temperature over $240^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, degradation rate of larch was relatively low as 49.58~54.15% at $300^{\circ}C$. The activation energy of yellow poplar was 87.32~91.24 kJ/mol; these values did not significantly change with heating rate. The activation energy of larch was 83.85~91.60 kJ/mol. The major components of the gas generated during torrefaction were derived from hemicellulose. The component types and concentrations increased with torrefaction severity. High concentrations of furfural and acetic acid were detected during torrefaction of yellow poplar.

  • It is crucial to investigate the thermal degradation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to understand the possible malfunction at high temperature. Herein, we investigated the effects of surface film formation on the thermal degradation of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) cathode that is one of representative cathode materials. Cycling test at 60℃ exhibited poorer cycleability compared with the cycling at 25℃. Cathodes after the initial 5 cycles at 60℃ (60-LCO) exhibited higher impedance compared to the cathode after initial 5 cycles at 25℃ (25-LCO), resulting in the lower rate capability upon subsequent cycling at 25℃, although the capacity values were similar at the lowest C-rate of 0.1C. In order to understand degradation of the LCO cathode at the high temperature, we analyzed the cathodes surface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Among various peaks, intensity of lithium hydroxide (LiOH) increased substantially after the operation at 60℃, and the C-C signal that represents the conductive agent was distinctly lower on 60-LCO compared to 25-LCO. These results pointed to an excessive formation of cathode-electrolyte interphase including LiOH at 60℃, leading to the increase in the resistance and the resultant degradation in the electrochemical performances.
