  • TiN 박막은 저온(<$500^{\circ}C$), 저압(1Torr)에서 Tetrakis(diethylamido)titanium[TDEAT, Ti(NEt2)4]single precursor를 사용하여 증착하였다. 증차고딘 박막은 SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy)으로 surface morphology와 step coverage를 측정하였고, TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy)분석결과 microcrystalline의 TiN을 확인하였다.

  • Metal oxide nanostructures have been applied to various fields such as energy, catalysts and electronics. We have freely designed one and two-dimensional (1 and 2-D) metal (transition metals and lanthanides) oxide nanostructures, characterized them using various techniques including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible-NIR absorption, Raman, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed thermal desorption (reaction) mass spectrometry. In addition, Ag- and Au-doped metal oxides will be discussed in this talk.

  • Scanning Thermal Microscope (STU) has been known for its superior resolution for local temperature and thermal property measurement. However, commercially available STU probe which is the key component of SThM does not provide resolution enough to explore nanoscale thermal phenomena. Here, we developed a SThM probe fabrication process that can achieve spatial resolution around 50 m. The batch-fabricated probe has a thermocouple junction located at the end of the tip. The size of the thermocouple junction is around 200 m and the distance of the junction from the very end of the tip is 150 m. The probe is currently being used for nanoscale thermal probing of nano-material and nano device.

  • The aluminum nitride films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering using an AlN ceramic target. The crystallinity, grain size, Al-N bonding and thermal conductivity were investigated in dependence on the plasma power densities (4.93, 7.40, 9.87 W/$cm^2$) during sputtering. High thermal conductivity is important properties of A1N passivation layer for functioning properly in thermal inkjet printhead. The crytallinity, grain size, Al-N bonding formation and chemical composition were observed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The AlN thin film was changed from amorphous to crystalline as the power density was increased, and the largest grain size appeared at medium power density. The near stoichiometry Al-N bonding ratio was acquired at medium power density. So, we know that the AlN thin film had better thermal conductivity with crystalline phase and near stoichometry Al-N bonding ratio at 7.40 W/$cm^2$ power density.

  • Four diamond films were deposited by the microwave plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition method varying CH4 concentration from 2.5 to 10% in the feeding gases. Thermal conductivity was measured on these free standing films by the steady state method from 80 K to 400K. They showed higher thermal conductivity as the film deposited with lower methane concentration. One exception, 7.79% methane concentration deposited film, was observed to be the highest thermal conductivity. Phonon scattering processes were considered to analyze the thermal conductivity with the full Callaway model. The grain size and the concentration of the extended and the point defects were used as the fitting parameters. Microstructure of diamond films was investigated with the scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Materials on the scale of nanoscale have widely been used as research topics because of their interesting characteristics and aspects they bring into the field. Out of the many metal oxides, zinc oxide (ZnO) was chosen to be fabricated as nanofibers using the electrospinning method for potential uses of solar cells and sensors. After ZnO nanofibers were obtained, calcination temperature effects on the ZnO nanofibers were studied and reported here. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the aggregation of the ZnO nanofibers progressed by calcination. X-ray diffraction (XRD) study showed the hcp ZnO structure was enhanced by calcination at 873 and 1173 K. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the crystallinity of the calcined ZnO nanofibers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) verified the thermal oxidation of Zn species by calcination in the nanofibers. These techniques have helped us deduce the facts that the diameter of ZnO increases as the calcination temperature was raised; the process of calcination affects the crystallinity of ZnO nanofibers, and the thermal oxidation of Zn species was observed as the calcination temperature was raised.

  • Vertically aligned arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) on layered Si substrates have been synthesized by water-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We studied changes in growth by parameters of growth temperature, growth time, rates of gas and annealing time of catalyst. Also, We grew CNTs by adding a little amount of water vapor to enhance the growth of CNTs. $H_2$, Ar, and $C_2H_2$ were used as carrier gas and feedstock, respectively. Before growth, Fe served as catalyst, underneath which AI were coated as an underlayer and a diffusion barrier, respectively, on the Si substrate. The water vapor had a greater effect on the growth of CNTs on a smaller thickness of catalyst. When the water vapor was introduced, the growth of CNTs was enhanced than without water. CNTs grew 1.29 mm for 10 min long by adding the water vapor, while CNTs were 0.73 mm long without water vapor for the same period of time. CNTs grew up to 1.97 mm for 30 min prior to growth termination under adding water vapor. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy.
