  • Zinc oxide films were deposited on Si (111) substrates by radio-frequency (rf)sputtering at a room temperature and post annealed in Na, air, and $H_2O$ ambient at temperatures between $800{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The properties were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and photoluminescence (PL). Our experiments demonstrated that ZnO films have the better crystal quality for post thermal annealing and especially in $H_2O$ ambient. Even though thermal annealing reduced deep level emission somewhat, for further getting rid off deep level emission, oxygen contents should be adjusted. In our results, $H_2O$ ambient gave the best structural and optical properties.

  • A novel T-type polyurethane 7 containing 1-(2,5-dioxyphenyl)-2-(5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thienyl)ethenes as NLO chromophores, which constitute part of the polymer backbone, was prepared. Polyurethane 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as DMF and DMSO. It shows a thermal stability up to $270^{\circ}C$ from TGA thermogram with $T_g$ value obtained from DSC thermogram near $155^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer film at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength is $3.56{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. Polymer 7 exhibits a thermal stability even at $5^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and no significant SHG decay is observed below $160^{\circ}C$, which is acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications.

  • Linear motors can drive a linear motion without intermediate gears, screws or crank shafts. Linear motors can successfully replace ball lead screw in machine tools because they have a high velocity, acceleration and good positioning accuracy. On the other hand, linear motors emit large amounts of heat and have low efficiency. In this paper, heat sources of a synchronous linear motor with high velocity and force measured and analyzed. To improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motor, an insulation layer with low thermal conductivity is inserted between cooler and machine table. Some effects of the insulation layer are presented.

  • This paper presents some measures far the optimization of the thermal behavior of linear motors, which are used as a high speed feed mechanism in machine tools. Thermo-Sandwich-Construction using two cooling circuits and an insulation layer shows an effective cooling system for linear motors. Conducting sheet can be also used to reduce heat flow from linear motor to machine table. Cooling pipe is a simple and effective cooling system for the secondary part of synchronous linear motor. Through the combination of the Thermo-Sandwich-Construction, conducting sheet and cooling pipe the thermally optimized linear motor shows a well improved thermal behavior in comparison with the prototype motor.

  • Understanding of heat generation in semiconductor devices is important in the thermal management of integrated circuits and in the analysis of the device physics. Scanning thermal microscope was used to measure the temperature and the electric potential distribution on the cross-section of an operating metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET). The temperature distributions were measured both in DC and AC modes in order to take account of the leakage current. The measurement results showed that as the drain bias was increased the hot spot moved to the drain. The density of the iso-potential lines near the drain increased with the increase in the drain bias.

  • Precision positioning system with magnetostrictive actuator(MA) has widely used in manufacturing devices to control the positioning accuracy to meet the high load and stroke requirements. It has many advantage in comparison with piezoelectic actuator; high force, high strain, high efficient etc. But, the performance of Terfenol-D, the commercially available magnetostrictive material, is highly dependent on the prestress, magnetic field intensity and temperature. Therefore, thermal strain of magnetostrictive material obstructs precision position control of magnetostrictive actuator, magnetostrictive actuator is need of cooling system. In this paper, cooling system using compressed cold air is developed and proper temperature and velocity of compressed cold air is studied by thermal analysis according to applied current.

  • For many decades, the railway was constructed using tracks with jointed rails of relatively short lengths in accordance with rolling and handling technology. The joints cause many drawbacks in the track and lead to significant maintenance cost. So, railroad engineers became interested in eliminating joints to increase service loads and speeds by improving rolling, welding, and fastening technology, Continuous welded rail(CWR) track has many advantages over the conventional jointed-rail track. But in the case of the elimination of rail joints, it may cause the track to be suddenly buckled laterally by thermal and vehicle loads. Thermal loads are caused by an increase in the temperature of railway track. In this paper, CWR track model and CWRB program are developed for linear buckling analysis using finite element method(FEM). The finite element discretization is used with a total of 14 degrees of freedom for each rail element. The stiffness of the fastener, tie, and ballast bed are included by a set of spring elements. The investigation on the buckling modes and temperature of CWR track is presented in the paper.

  • A gas turbine blade with thermal barrier ceramic coating is operated at high temperature to increase engine efficiency. Recently, thermal barrier characteristics have been improved by advanced coating technology through microstructure control and increase of adhesion force of the coating layer. More advanced coating materials, rare earth zircon ate ceramics have been studied for replacing YSZ coatings as thermal barrier coatings. In this study, $La_2O_3,\;HfO_2,\;CeO_2,\;Gd_2O_3$ and pure or yttria stabilized zirconia were prepared. Microstructure analysis and the evaluation of mechanical properties such as Hertzian indentation and hardness test were performed.

  • In this paper, we have investigated thermal properties of semiconductive shield materials for power cables. EEA (Ethylene Ethyl Acrylate) was used for base polymer and TGA (Thermal Gravimetric Analysis) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) were investigated with various carbon black and CNT (carbon nanotube) contents. When CNT reinforced composites and conventional composite were investigated with TGA, we knew that thermal properties of CNT reinforced composite were better than them of conventional composite. To investigate roughness, we used AFM. Before and after aging, AFM was applied and after aging, roughness was increased. As a result, suitable CNT and CB(carbon black) content is CNT:CB=50:50.

  • Residual stress caused in the weldments with high restraint force are often during welding observed in the weldments of large size nozzles or radial tanks. The reason is that quantitative analysis about thermal stresses during welding is lack for this weldments. To verify Finite Elements Method(FEM) theory, the temperature was measured with thermocouple in a real time in this paper. Also analysis of the thermal stress for welding condition is performed by ABAQUS program package on various welding condition in 304 stainless steel butt welding.
