This study investigates fire-retardant performances and combustion/thermal characteristics of fire-retardant treated wood by comparing them with those of fire-retardant untreated wood from the expreimental resutls of cone calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric(TG) analyzer. Hazardousness of combustion product gases for fire-retardant treated wood and untreasted wood were also observed from the results of internal finish material incombustibility test according to the Korea standard code of KS F 2271. In this study, we also tried to improve the fire retardant performance of wood by applying fire-retardant chemical composites, and to secure the fire safety performance in buildings. Red pine (Pinus densiflora) was selected as a test specimen because it is mostly used as a building material in Korea. Fire retardant chemical composites (FRCs) were prepared by mixing boron, phosphorous, and nitrogen species and treated by press-impregnation method. Water-based FRCs were composed of 3% boric acid($H_3BO_3$), 3% borax decahydrate($Na_2B_4O_7$), 8% ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$), diammonium phosphate ($(NH_4)_2HPO_4$) varied from 10-30% and potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) varied from 10-30%. From the test results of cone calorimeter, TG analysis and gas hazard assessments, newly proposed were the optimal composition and production methods of FRCs which can sufficiently meet fire-retardant level 3 based on Korea law of construction. Thus, the FRCs, developed in this study, are anticipated to contribute to the improvement of fire safety and widespread of usage in wood as building materials.
As precursors of cathode materials for lithium ion batteries, $Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}(OH)_2$ powders are prepared in a continuously stirred tank reactor via a co-precipitation reaction between aqueous metal sulfates and NaOH in the presence of $NH_4OH$ in air or nitrogen ambient. Calcination of the precursors with $Li_2CO_3$ for 8 h at $1,000^{\circ}C$ in air produces dense spherical cathode materials. The precursors and final powders are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, particle size analysis, tap density measurement, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The precursor powders obtained in air or nitrogen ambient show XRD patterns identified as $Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}(OH)_2$. Regardless of the atmosphere, the final powders exhibit the XRD patterns of $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ (NCM). The precursor powders obtained in air have larger particle size and lower tap density than those obtained in nitrogen ambient. NCM powders show similar tendencies in terms of particle size and tap density. Electrochemical characterization is performed after fabricating a coin cell using NCM as the cathode and Li metal as the anode. The NCM powders from the precursors obtained in air and those from the precursors obtained in nitrogen have similar initial charge/discharge capacities and cycle life. In conclusion, the powders co-precipitated in air can be utilized as precursor materials, replacing those synthesized in the presence of nitrogen injection, which is the usual industrial practice.

The 16 natural zeolites collected from Mongolia (6 types), the United States (1 type), and Korea (9 types) were characterized by XRD, XRF, TGA, DTA, and CEC analysis. All 16 samples are composite minerals. Two or more mineral phases co-exist and consist primarily of minerals such as clinoptilolite, heulandite, mordenite, and chabazite. In certain samples, minerals like illite and quartz were present as impurities. The XRF analysis showed that the 16 natural zeolites contain SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, CaO, Na2O, MgO, and Fe2O3 oxides. The cation exchange capacity of the U-1 sample was 223.3 meg/100 g, which is higher than the rest of the samples. M-6 sample in Mongolian natural zeolite and K-1 sample in Korean natural zeolite showed the highest cation exchange capacity at 166.6 meg/100 g. As a result of thermal differential and thermos gravimetric analysis, all 16 samples showed excellent thermal stability up to 600℃.
Copolymers of gelatin and poly (vinyl alcohol), (PVA) grafted by acrylic acid (AAc) with excellent water absorption and retention abilities under neutral conditions were successfully synthesized using $^{60}Co$ gamma radiations in presence of ammonium persulphate (APS), as water soluble initiator and sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$) as foaming agent. The optimum synthesis conditions pertaining to maximum swelling percentage were evaluated as a function of gelatin/PVA ratio, amount of water, concentration of APS, $NaHCO_3$, monomer concentration and total irradiation dose. Maximum percent swelling (1694.59%) of the copolymer, gelatin-co-PVA, was obtained at optimum $[APS]=2.92{\times}10^{-1}mol/L$, $[NaHCO_3]=7.94{\times}10^{-2}mol/L$ and 1.5 mL of water at total dose of 31.104 kGy while in case of grafted copolymer, (gelatin-co-PVA)-g-poly(AAc), maximum percent swelling (560.86%) was obtained using $8.014{\times}10^{-1}mol/L$ of AAc in 9 mL water with 31.104 kGy preirradiation dose. The pristine and grafted copolymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods. The copolymers loaded with an antiseptic, Povidone, were used as wound dressing materials for wounded gastrocnemius muscle of mice and the results exhibit that (gelatin-co-PVA)-g-poly (AAc) copolymer is a potent wound dressing material as compared to the copolymer.

The pyrolysis characteristics of celluloses and plastics, which are the principal materials contributing to the municipal solid wastes(MSWs), was investigated with a thermal gravimetric analysis reaction system. The experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range of 400~900K at various experimental conditions. Also, a modified pyrolysis model for compressed MSWs has been proposed. Varing the heating rate to 20, 30, 40K/min, reaction orders of MSWs' main component were around 1.1~1.9, activation energies were 117~166kJ/mol for celluloses and 187~239kJ/mol for plastics. Char yield was proportional to the heating rate, particle size, and compressed ratio. The model proposed in this study, which is applying Arrhenius equation and thermodynamics, is closer to the experimental results than the conventional model.

In this study, the selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ with ammonia was carried out in a filter bag support reactor. The experiments were performed by powder type $MnO_x$ and $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst at low temperature between 130 and $250^{\circ}C$. Also, the effect of $SO_2$ and $H_2O$ on the NO conversion was investigated under our test conditions. The powder type catalysts were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). It was observed that NO removal efficiency of the powder type $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst was 85% at low temperature($200^{\circ}C$) under presence of oxygen and that of $MnO_x$ was 50% at the same condition. The powder type $V_2O_5$/$TiO_2$ catalyst, in conclusion, was found to be available for SCR reaction in a filter bag support system.
Highly ablation resistant carbon nanotube (CNT)-phenolic composites were fabricated by the addition of low concentrations of CNT nanofiller. Tensile and compressive properties as well as ablative resistance were significantly improved by the addition of only 0.1 and 0.3 wt% of uniformly dispersed CNTs. An oxygen-kerosene-flame torch and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) were used to evaluate the ablative properties and microstructures of these CNT-phenolic composites. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the ablation rate was lower for the 0.3 wt% CNT-phenolic composites than for neat phenolic or the composite with 0.1 wt% CNT. Ablative mechanisms for all three materials were investigated using this TGA in conjunction with microstructural studies using a FE-SEM. The microstructural studies revealed that CNT acted as an ablation resistant phase at high temperatures, and that the uniformity of dispersion of the CNT played an important role in this resistance to ablation.
This manuscript deals with the investigation of the possibility of the crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes with both poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) and 3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA) for the fuel cell application. The studies were focused on the characterization of the resulting membranes through water content, thermal gravimetric analysis, ion exchange capacity, ion conductivity and methanol permeability measurements and then compared with the existing Nafion membrane. Typically, the ion conductivity lied in the range of $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-2}\;S/cm$ while the methanol permeability showed the range of $10^{-6}$ to $10^{-8}\;cm^2/s$.
In recent years, many studies have been done on the performance of concrete containing glass powder (GP). For the purpose of widespread use of GP in concrete mixes, a knowledge of the performance of such a mixture after a fire is essential for the perspective of structural use. This research work was carried out to evaluate the performance of High Performance Concrete (HPC) made with GP after being exposed to elevated temperature. The studied mixtures include partial replacement of cement by GP with up to 30%. The mechanical performance and structural alterations were assessed after high temperature treatment from 200℃ to 800℃. The mechanical performance was evaluated by testing the specimens to the compressive and tensile strength. In addition, the mass loss and the porosity were measured to notice the structural alterations. Changes in microstructure due to temperature was also investigated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) as well as porosity adsorption tests. The results of the concrete strength tests showed a slight difference in compressive strength and the same tensile strength performance when replacing a part of the cement by GP. However, after high temperature exposition, concrete with GP showed better performance than the reference concrete for temperature below 600℃. But, after heating at 800℃, the strength of the concrete with GP drop slightly more than reference concrete. This is accompanied by an important increase in mass loss and water porosity. After the microstructure analysis, no important changes happened differently for concrete with GP at high temperature except a new calcium silica form appears after the 800℃ heating.

A comb-like copolymer consisting of a poly(vinyl chloride) backbone and poly(hydroxy ethyl acrylate) side chains, i.e. PVC-g-PHEA, was synthesized through atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). This comb-like copolymer was crosslinked with 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid (IDA) via the esterification of the -OH groups of PHEA in the graft copolymer and the -COOH groups of IDA. Upon doping with phosphoric acid (PA, $H_3PO_4$) to form imidazole-PA complexes, the proton conductivity of the membranes continuously increased with increasing PA content. A maximum proton conductivity of 0.011 S/cm was achieved at $100^{\circ}C$ under anhydrous conditions. The PVC-g-PHEA/IDA/PA complex membranes exhibited good mechanical properties, i.e. 575 MPa of Young's modulus, as determined by a universal testing machine (UTM). Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that the membranes were thermally stable up to $200^{\circ}C$.
