This paper deals with the recent developments of high thermal conductivity silicon nitride ceramics. First, the factors that reduce the thermal conductivity of silicon nitride are clarified and the potential approaches to realize high thermal conductivity are described. Then, the recent achievements on the silicon nitride fabricated through the reaction bonding and post sintering technique are presented. Because of a smaller amount of impurity oxygen, the obtained thermal conductivity is substantially higher, compared to that of the conventional gas-pressure sintered silicon nitride, while the microstructures and bending strengths are similar to each other between these two samples. Moreover, further improvement of the thermal conductivity is possible by increasing ${\beta}/{\alpha}$ phase ratio of the nitrided sample, resulting in a very high thermal conductivity of 177 W/($m{\cdot}K$) as well as a high fracture toughness of 11.2 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.
In recent years, thermal insulation coating technology for automotive engine parts has received significant attention as a means of improving the thermal efficiency of automotive engines. One of the characteristics of thermal insulation coatings is their low thermal conductivity, and, materials such as YSZ (Yttria-stabilized zirconia), which have low thermal conductivity, are used for this purpose. This research presents a study of the changes in the microstructure and thermal conductivity of $8YSZ/SiO_2$ multi compositional thermal insulation coating for different compositions, and particle size distributions of suspension, when it is subjected to suspension plasma spraying. To obtain a porous coating structure, the mixing ratio of 8YSZ and $SiO_2$ particles and the particle sizes of the $SiO_2$ were changed. The microstructure, phase formation behavior, porosity and thermal conductivity of the coatings were analyzed. The porosities were found to be 1.2-32.1%, and the thermal conductivities of the coatings were 0.797-0.369 W/mK. The results of the study showed that the microstructures of the coatings were strongly influenced by the particle size distributions, and that the thermal conductivities of the coatings were greatly impacted by the microstructures of the coatings.
In this study, a 3D microstructure-based model is established to simulate the effective thermal conductivity of cement paste, covering varying influencing factors associated with microstructure and thermal transfer mechanisms. The virtual cement paste divided into colloidal C-S-H and heterogeneous paste are reconstructed based on its structural attributes. Using the two-level hierarchical cement pastes as inputs, a lattice Boltzmann model for heat conduction is presented to predict the thermal conductivity. The results suggest that due to the Knudsen effect induced by the nanoscale pore, the thermal conductivity of air in C-S-H gel pore is significantly decreased, maximumly accounting for 3.3% thermal conductivity of air at the macroscale. In the cement paste, the thermal conductivities of dried and saturated cement pastes are stable at the curing age larger than 100 h. The high water-to-cement ratio can decrease the thermal conductivity of cement paste.
Investigators have been perplexed with the thermal phenomena behind the recently discovered nanofluids, fluids with unprecedented stability of suspended nanoparticles although huge difference in the density of nanoparticles and fluid. For example, nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.
Nanofluids have been studied as possible alternatives for heat transfer fluids to improve the efficiency of heat exchangers. There are deviations of measured effective thermal conductivities between research-groups, and the mechanisms of the effective thermal conductivity enhancement of nanofluids are not confirmed yet. In this study, the effects of particle shape on the effective thermal conductivity enhancement are discussed and presented as a possible explanation of the deviations. The particle motion effect is found to be negligible for nanofluids of high aspect ratio cylindrical particles, which is believed to be important for nanofluids of spherical particles, while the percolation network formation and contact resistance play dominant roles in determining the effective thermal conductivity.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of the morphology of CNT (Carbon Nanotube) on the thermal conductivity of suspensions. The effective thermal conductivities of the samples were measured using a steady-state cut bar apparatus method. Enhancements based on the thermal conductivity of the base fluid are presented as functions of both the volume fraction and the temperature. Although functionalized SWNT (Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube) produced more stable and homogeneous suspensions, the addition of small amounts of surfactant to suspensions of 'as produced' SWNT demonstrated a greater increase in effective thermal conductivity than functionalized SWNT alone. The effective thermal conductivity enhancement corresponding to 1.0% by volume approached 10%, which was observed to be lower than expected, but more than twice the values, 3.5%, obtained for similar tests conducted using aluminum oxide suspensions. However, for suspensions of MWNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube), the degree of enhancement was measured to be approximately 37%. It was postulated that the effect of clustering, resulting from the multiple heat-flow passages constituted by interconnecting neighboring CNT clusters, played an important role in significant enhancement of effective thermal conductivity.

The high permeability-high strength concrete belongs to the typical of porous materials. It is mainly used in underground engineering for cold area, it can act the role of heat preservation, also to be the bailing and buffer layer. In order to establish a suitable model to predict the thermal conductivity and directly applied for engineering, according to the structure characteristics, the thermal conductivity predicting model was built by resistance network model of parallel three-phase medium. For the selected geometric and physical cell model, the thermal conductivity forecast model can be set up with aggregate particle size and mixture ratio directly. Comparing with the experimental data and classic model, the prediction model could reflect the mixture ratio intuitively. When the experimental and calculating data are contrasted, the value of experiment is slightly higher than predicting, and the average relative error is about 6.6%. If the material can be used in underground engineering instead by the commonly insulation material, it can achieve the basic requirements to be the heat insulation material as well.

A metallic microcell UO2 pellet has a microstructure where a metal wall is connected to overcome the low thermal conductivity of the UO2 fuel pellet. It has been verified that metallic microcell fuel pellets provide an impressive reduction of the fuel centerline temperature through a Halden irradiation test. However, it is difficult to predict the effective thermal conductivity of these pellets and researchers have had to rely on measurement and use of the finite element method. In this study, we designed a unit microcell model using a thermal resistance circuit to calculate the effective thermal conductivity on the basis of the microstructure characteristics by using the aspect ratio and compared the results with those of reported metallic UO2 microcell pellets. In particular, using the thermal conductivity calculated by our model, the fuel centerline temperature of Cr microcell pellets on the 5th day of the Halden irradiation test was predicted within 6% error from the measured value.

Two-dimensional steady laminar natural convection around a heat conducting and generating solid body inside a square enclosure with different thermal boundaries is performed. The mathematical model is governed by the coupled equation of mass, momentum and energy. These equations are discretized by finite volume method with power-law scheme and solved numerically by SIMPLE algorithm with under-relaxation technique. Effect of Rayleigh number, temperature difference ratio of solid-fluid, aspect ratio of solid-enclosure and the thermal conductivity ratio of solid-fluid are investigated numerically for Pr = 0.7. The flow and heat transfer aspects are demonstrated in the form of streamlines and isotherms respectively.
