  • This paper demonstrates a comparison of linear and nonlinear analyses for thermo-optic effects of optical temperature sensor based on the etched silica-based planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include theoretical analyses and experiment of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating optical temperature sensor. Theoretical models with nonlinear than linear temperature effect for the grating response based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • This report is researched on the cause and mechanism of soil erosion in comparison among Kwangnung, Mt. Kaya, Mt. Chili, and Mt. Soorak by physical and chemical analyses of their for- est soils. Clay, silt, and fine sand of Mt. Soorak are far less than those of Mt. Chili, Mt. Kaya, and Kwangnung area while coarse sand is very high level. The clay ratio of soil at Mt. Soorak is the most high level in comparison with that of other area. Denudation at Mt. Soorak, therefore, is cause of erosion by the result of transportation of soil particles. The eroding velocity increase for larger particle size and stronger cohesion between soil particles. Very fine sand, silt, and clay can be present in suspension near the bottom and the size of the particles in suspension depends upon the velocity of the current near the bottom and the roughness of the bottom.   • During the initial stage of propulsion shaft design, the shaft alignment process includes a thorough consideration of lateral vibration to verify the operational safety of the shaft. However, a theoretical method for analyzing forced lateral vibrations has not been clearly established. The methods currently used in classification societies and international standards can only ensure a sufficient margin to avoid the blade-passing frequency resonance speed outside the range of ${\pm}20%$ of the maximum continuous rating (MCR) for the engine. Typically, in shaft alignment analyses, longer center distances between the support bearings promote affirmative results, but the blade order resonance speed can approach the lower limit for lateral vibration. Therefore, this matter requires careful attention by engineers, and a verification of the theoretical analysis by experimental measurements is highly desirable. In this study, both theoretical and experimental analyses were conducted using strain gauges under two draught conditions of vessels used as 50,000-DWT oil/chemical tankers, introduced recently as eco-friendly ships. Based on the analyses, the influence of the lateral vibration on the shafting system and the system's reliability was reviewed.

  • In conventional three-phase rectifiers, it was necessary to use a transformer to obtain low output voltage. In this paper, we propose a new three-phase rectifiers circuit that achieves low voltage by using a very simple circuit configuration that does not have a transformer and does not need any complex control. We also describe the operation principle of the proposed circuit, and derive a theoretical formula for its current waveform. On the basis of this formula it also explores the theoretical input/output current characteristics, theoretical current amplification factor, and theoretical output voltage characteristics of these theoretical values with experimentally obtained input/output current characteristics, current amplification factor, and output voltage characteristics, allowed us to confirm the soundness of our theoretical analyses.

  • Civil infrastructures, such as bridges and tunnels are most important assets and their failure during service will have significant economic and social impact in any country. Behavior of a bridge can be evaluated only through actual monitoring/measurements of bridge members under the loads of interest. Theoretical analysis alone is not a good predictor of the ability of a bridge. In some cases, theoretical analyses can give less effect than actual since theoretical analyses do not consider the actual condition of the bridge, support conditions, level of corrosion and damage in members and connections etc. Hence actual measurements of bridge response should be considered in making decisions on structural integrity, especially in cases of high value bridges (large spans and major crossings). This paper describes in detail the experimental investigations carried out on an open web type steel railway bridge. Strain gages and displacement transducers were installed at critical locations and responses were measured during passage of locomotives. Stresses were evaluated and extrapolated to maximum design loading. The responses measured from the bridge were within the permissible limits. The methodology adopted shall be used for assessing the structural integrity of the bridge for the design loads.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. In this paper(Part III), the behavior of ER clutch under proper conditions was investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical analyses developed from Part I, II. Considering the optimum design concept proposed from Part I, the concentric cylinder type of ER clutch was designed and the experimental apparatus for the performance test was constructed. The comparisons made indicated that the power transmission model of ER clutch and the temperature rise model of ER fluid developed from Part I, II were acceptable for engineering design calculations.culations.

  • Accident analysis is special concern to researchers in traffic safety. Accident analysis in product safety, however, is not. The needs of product safety management alter it in the world by all manufacturers. The purpose of this study is to propose a theoretical principles for product safety management through the accident cost analyses. The accident cost is a important factor to prevent product accident and to treat some claims of customers. It is sure that this principles can help all making decisions of manufactures with expected accident cost per a product accident and with total expected accident cost.

  • Uncertainty study of shear strength characteristics of the marine clays was carried out based ell In-situ tests and laboratory tests on tile south-east coastal region of the Korean peninsula. Theoretical analyses were studied using both tile spherical cavity expansion theory in finite soil mass and the strain path method to determine tile cone factor using the undrained shear strengths obtained by in-situ tests, and the empirical methods in accordance with the ultimate resistance theory were also discussed. Analysis show that the empirical methods suggest more reasonable value than that of theoretical methods in terms of comparing the cone factor estimated using linear regression and frequency distribution analyses. The cone factors obtained by the empirical methods are 18, 15, and 6 respectively, from the results of total cone resistance, effective cone resistance, and excess porewater cone resistance method, and the estimated were similar to those of previous researcher's.

Computational Challenges for Integrative Genomics

  • Integrated genomics refers to the use of large-scale, systematically collected data from various sources to address biological and biomedical problems. A critical ingredient to a successful research program in integrated genomics is the establishment of an effective computational infrastructure. In this review, we suggest that the computational infrastructure challenges include developing tools for heterogeneous data organization and access, innovating techniques for combining the results of different analyses, and establishing a theoretical framework for integrating biological and quantitative models. For each of the three areas - data integration, analyses integration, and model integration - we review some of the current progress and suggest new topics of research. We argue that the primary computational challenges lie in developing sound theoretical foundations for understanding the genome rather than simply the development of algorithms and programs.
